you have to have valid insurance for the car unless you SORN it -- i.e. if the car is registered in the DVLA database it needs valid insurance (and road tax) unless it exists in the database as SORNed

no grey areas, even if you keep it off road or in a garage - SORNed or taxed and insured - no half way houses

they will just fine you automatically etc

My 54 plate Spec C was £400 as imported early 2007, yet another swindle against the motorist
They don't even try to hide the fact that they're double-dealing scumbags:

"Vehicle tax will be payable in line with the vehicle’s first registration date in the UK. If the vehicle has been previously registered abroad, the date it's first registered in the UK will determine the amount of vehicle tax that’s payable. DVLA will also allocate a vehicle registration number appropriate to the vehicle’s first registration abroad." Registering an imported vehicle
So in other words, even though they know full well the car's a much older model, and make you stick a plate on it to match, they'll sting you for the tax rate of a car that would have been new when you imported it.

that is just yet one more reason to get money out of us, not sure of insures do this but surely if that comes in to place insurance companies will have to offer lower priced policys just to have the car insured for theft from a home address with it's own certificate stating not covered for road or something along those lines, as i am sure there are owners out there who only put them on the track and don't have them insured.
