Its been a bit of a quiet time, the planned session I had for myself went out the window due to customer cars needing attention, however I did put some time into it over the weekend. I was using Road Dyno (Deltadash) to do the bench marking so the torque levels show higher than if it was done on the rollers but never the less I think the results are very indicative and valid. I will post some comparison graphs up a little later, but for now here are the "sector times" I took ...

Before: -

In Gear Acceleration:
50 - 70mph = 2.8 seconds
60 - 80mph = 2.9 seconds
70 - 90mph = 3.2 seconds
80 -100mph = 3.7 seconds


After: -

In Gear Acceleration:
50 - 70mph = 2.7 seconds
60 - 80mph = 2.7 seconds
70 - 90mph = 2.8 seconds
80 -100mph = 3.2 seconds

Car mass as per brochure plus me plus fuel allowance, tank had 55 - 60 litres in so virtualy full up. Gear used was 4th, needed to give the software something to bite on, third is "better" as terminals are lower but engine revs too quickly to get a decent graph.


Mods are very basic ... remember car was a PPP to start with.

Sti panel filter (had one in the garage)
Prodrive (Walbro) fuel pump
Prodrive mid section
Prodrive back box
Standard down pipe.

Thats it.

As a PPP car dynod at 324 bhp, given cold weather seemed realistic, no ignition learning of any sort showing. (Prodrive quote 317 bhp or 320 ps)

After mapping car dynod at 368 bhp.

There is a bit more to come from this configuration given a small adjustment to the boost control pipework. I should be able to sort that out and check again this coming weekend.

Its not just about peak figures though, the part throttle response has been dramatically improved, it doesn't have that "soggy" drive by wire feel any more, very easy to break traction in the first three gears.

I have also done my usual thing with the throttle mapping.

So all in all I am not too unhappy considering the specification.

Still thinking about what to try in place of the std down pipe, its easy to simply decat the lot and go 3", I have a mind to just fit a sports cat first and leave the mid and back as is, that would be an interesting next step.

BTW this is still the normal remap rom in use, I have skirmished at Race Rom but I will complete this step first so I have an extablished base line of increased performance to work from.

Yes VF43, essentially the same as the VF39 also used but with a bigger wastegate to overcome the tendency of the VF39 to boost creep, well worth fitting to a 2 litre as an upgrade. Has a P18 exhaust housing. Sleeve bearing turbo.

Very nice figures from a VF43 indeed Bob and can see these being the next VF34's i.e. in Demand....

That Race Ecu is beginning to sound a bit Saucy Bob

Nick I'll get that for you and post, I used 21.8% losses a la Dyno Dynamics Shoot 44 mode, that seemed to correlate to the PPP figures well enough, its what consistently use on customer cars. WHP was 287, just checked, the PPP showed 253, need to host the graphs to post. Thats not what the DD graphs show since I use an averaging algorythm in Excel to further smooth the data for presentation. Which lowers the figures.
I have a GTec Pro here and am going to use that as well, however when I am happy with things it will go on the rollers somewhere which is what I did with the Twin scroller I had. For now its about progressive improvement more than absolutes.

Been tweaking the throttle mapping agin this evening, found an anomaly which I wanted to understand before I got seriously stuck into Race Rom, all is now understood with the help and support of Ben at Ecutek, I have been looking in the corners of the room again (lol) and under the carpet !! But I do feel its just as important to fully understand those areas as the most commonly used ones. I refer to maps of course, just because you only ever adjust a map one way doesn't mean that you don't also need to establish what happens in the opposite direction. So I now have what appears to be super sensative throttle response which suits my driving style and should have now completely eliminated the soggy feel these cars tend to have. The GT2 drives like a GT3 on Red Bull after I remapped the throttle and I wanted the same result for this car, I will find out if I achieved that in the morning. The Hawk was pretty good as I had it but the Torque to Throttle mapping needed work to make me happy.

Bit more on the throttle mapping, decided that an on/off switch wasn't conducive to driving sensibly especially when a bit damp. More work and its now spot on, better response even than I had in the Sti 5 but with the right degree of progressive action to make things very smooth without the sort of dead "wait for it" feeling it had as standard.

So tick the box on that, Race Rom time.

Default Race Rom Time

Today started with some refining of the existing maps, having run for several weeks without any sign of stress a tweak on the fuel mapping to lean things out a little, changed the boost control pipework to snap and liven the boost response up, minor ignitition map changes to take out some of the "safe" areas that are not needed for this setup ... and loaded up Race Rom.

Race Rom is an addition to an existing rom file, so having got the car to my liking all I had to do is add the Race Rom patch to it. Its Beta so a special Flash 2004 has to be used for this.

That done next step is to decide what features to enable and how to switch from Road to Race settings, I left the road setting as existing so effectively nothing is enabled, for the Race setting I have enabled everything except the speed density function.

So ticked the "yes" box on ....

Per gear boost control (actually I enabled this in both Road and Race settings)

Launch control (LC)

Flat foot shifting (FFS)

Auto blip on downshift (ABD)

Per gear RPM limit

I also have full twin maps, one set for Road and one set for Race to go with the gear by gear boost control mapping. There are currently 39 boost control maps which can be adjusted across both Race and Road settings.

I have left the Speed density turned off for now as I want to optimise some settings to my car. The throttle mapping is very different to standard.

So play time, a nice touch is the visual indication to tell you which set of maps you are in when switching from one to the other.

Several "runs" later, settings tweaked, heart in mouth a bit when I first tested the FFS, everything works

There is a lot to do yet, fine tuning to absolutely suit the car will be done over a number of sessions.

Both sets of maps are set the same for now, all the boost control settings are the same for both sets of maps and across all the gears. I want to get the FFS and ABD fully optimised for the car then I will start on the gear specific stuff.

I tested the launch control but did not use, having snapped rear drive shafts testing in the STi5 I decided to wait for a slightly damp surface for the first effort.

Here is a snap shot of the FFS in full flight ... felt pretty good for a starter set up.

Note the ABD coming into action as I braked down at the end of the run.

I am going to have a lot of fun testing this

I think all the UK / US/ European Hawkeyes are DBW, JDM I believe still use a throttle cable.

Good to see you back on here Bob and with a new project car.

Thanks for the info on the plugs by the way, I was contemplating whether to leave mine for the full interval recommended by Subaru or change em earlier; I think I'll do the latter!

Quick question regarding Simtek. I understand there is an update imminent which includes closed loop idle control among other things. Can this be added as a software upgrade to the existing ECU, or will it necessitate the ECU being sent back for a swap. What are the costs involved? I'm afraid I don't have a date for date of production/version number for my Simtek ECU, I can only tell you that you fitted and mapped it in April last year.

Hi Paul, speaking to Simtek last week the upgrade was waiting some "final testing". A definitive timescale couldn't be put to it, I suspect Steve is pretty busy at the moment. I don't have any clear info on wether the upgrade willl be a software "flash" or necessitate the ecu being sent back for firmware change but that will obviously be made clear once the test process is completed and us dealers are updated. Its taken some time as its not just an upgrade for a single addition but rather a package.

Subaru plug intervals are a bit of a joke, especially in a tuned vehicle, the differences can be very significant.

Hi all, yes it has been sort of quiet I've been working on the Race Rom system, basically trying differing combinations of settings to establish optimum base map levels for future use, currently I am not sure of the availability of this generally. I've started to work on the speed density aspects, this will be something of a challenge to the average tuner as it needs setting up to suit whatever throttle mapping you have used. There are great benefits in response to be had from adjusting those maps.

But unfortunately (for my pocket) I have again been bitten, I bought the car fully intending to not like it (odd thing to say) as I needed a drive by wire for R & D but wasn't really planning to make it a project, however I had the pleasure of mapping a Hawkeye in the Northern regions recently and that, on the oem ecu, easily made 500 plus bhp and similar ft lbs of torque, using most of my enhanced settings, but not Race Rom, the car felt really good, have to say that was the point at which I said to myself "I have to do this".

So I have been looking at options and will shortly be able to post a progression of activity leading to something that ought to be very special. The project will involve at least two of the best known influences on Scooby tuning.

So watch this space, it won't be a "***** out" project to start, I will be sticking to the std turbo etc for a short while.

I will publish the details once I have the full spec and things are under way. It will be a progressive project but the engine, clutch and exhaust will, at the outset, be capable of supporting the maximum whilst I have fun establishing the limits of the standard turbo and ancillary's before upgrading to the full monte. Do it once and do it right is the objective.

Spec is coming together, exhaust and clutch options identified, engine spec firming up with, of course, the inevitable additions including a close look at cryogenic component pre treatment. A bit more to investigate then I will be able to post up some details.
