DW, interesting. my wife is now put off with the peeps saying MPH is cr8p, she thinks using it to drive to work and back will be two gallon a day!!!, Nottm to Mansfield, 5days a week.

option 2, we get a ST look-a-likey with all the goodies in TDCi (but larger than the 1.6 Ghia we have now).

Ford do a Zetec S which looks sporty - rear diffuser, 18"s, side skirts, front spoiler, etc

Here's 1 in white, 5 door as well

looks nice, but so basic inside. nothing like the Ghia she has now, think we need to look at the Titanium TDCi's.. in white
As the wife would want leather heated seats, she's still wants cruise control, rear electric windows and all the toys she has now.

That does look the biz though ... from the outside.

Tell her to look at a Honda Civic 2.2 diesel EX if she wants something with all the toys.

Oi! We have the Civic and it's great, although running costs aren't that good even despite the good MPG.

Trust me on this one - go and sit in a Focus, Golf, Leon, Megane etc and then try a Civic - that's what we did, weren't even looking at Civic's and was about to sign up for a Golf and the Civic blew us away with the interior, leagues ahead of everything else in terms of the interior and seating position.

Although I love my ST, the Civic interior is a better place to be especially with kids and.or on long journeys and it still does 55mpg when we go to London and back.

Totally agree with what DW saying here.
I've got the same car and it's much better than the A3, Golf and Jetta I've had as company cars before.
Very comfy on a long journey, can get over 60mpg, and very practical for storage with the clever folding rear seats.

Mrs Matt was quite taken by the Civic from the interior alone. I hired one (sporty but not a Type R or S) and it was pretty decent but unremarkable.

They actually handle really well IMO once you have lived with them for a while, I do like to chuck ours around when in a hurry.

But in the 3 years we've owned the Civic it has cost over £500 a year servicing, we've had a few warranty issues with trim, handbrake, drop links etc and now the clutch is going at 32k miles, which has happened to about 50% of the std diesels now.

2009 on models are better.

A Honda that's not rock solid?!!!! That's not right!

That servicing is more than a ponsey Beemer too!

I know, we had a 2 year old Beemer for a year before the Civic and that was OK on service costs etc.

In fact, the Civic was all set to go last week as I found a peach of a 320d touring with every option going but it sold an hour or so before I talked to the garage, not to mention the snow stopping us from getting to Suffolk for it. Gutted but will find one soon, although possibly not with the spec it was.

A fine engine that 20d unit. Take it to Evolve for a stealth 210bhp beastie that uses almost no fuel and cost almost nothing to tax.

It's for the Mrs so 177bhp/ps or whatever they are should be fine. Just need this flaming snow to bugger off now so I can buy one.

Only driven a 120d with that engine - it went pretty well. Just sounded a bit diesely.

DW, your older than me, so a civic will suit you lol
seriously though my sister went to look at one last year when she wanted to change her 2.0l Golf GTsport TDi,
1. she didn't like the look
2. didn't think the quality was as good as the golf
3. didn't like the plastic trim around the wheels arches, remeinded her of the Ka she used to have.
4. servicing costs made the Golf look like a bargin.. as she did almost 30k a year.

A ford is a ford, you know what you get and you know they won't go bust.

My mate has a civic type r (new shape) and he reckons his servicing is cheap at around £200 - £250.

why not just ditch ford all together and try some other manufacturers that have ST power but drink alot less?

Funny thing about Skodas - we all know they are pretty decent now but the owners REALLY do feel the need to tell everyone about it!

Waited for a tyre quote (four new tyres - ouch!) for the Bimmer and there was a guy there with a newish Skoda Superb with a 170PS diesel engine- he went on and on and on and on about it. Nice bloke but it was a bit OTT.

I like these, was tempted to buy on instead of my ST until I saw the tax band.

They are near the top so from next year will cost £430 a year to tax vs £245 for the ST - I know it's not a massive amount but these things add up, not to mention the hadnling on them is iffy.

Surprised you are not promoting the VAG options - a Leon TDi would be a good choice IMO.

Hmm - 335d or a vRS...?

Actually I've had several comments on here from people that didn't know quite how quick the 335d is until I posted test results.

Just facts, no badge defending (apart from the image, BMWs don't need defending).

So is the Mazda 3 MPS in the top tax band? That's daft!!

The 170 can be troublesome depending on how you drive.

Well the leon isnt to everyones liking and the golf is expensive. The mazda is not far off a mapped cupra, and the std equipment list is massive.

The new Mazda 3 mps doesnt fall into the highest tax bracket either and the handling is meant to have been improved quite alot. Its been getting good reviews. I would consider one if there was a tuning scene available for them.
