My story is a few years ago and was on a road rally.
The rally itself was the Markates Breiddyn (if anyone remembers it !), and I was driving my Chevette (don't laugh). The car was great and we had a few really good results. It was fitted with a 2.1 pinto Ford engine and had a 4 speed pro quaiffe bearbox and a host of other decent stuff.

This was the second year we had done the event and my navigator had a real photographic memory for roads and I trusted him implicitly. The event was going well and we were in the top three so were pushing very hard.
The selective in question was very fast and towards the end had a series of very big blind brows. My nav told me he remembered them all to be 'absolutely flat' and he was correct in that fact. Over the very last brow I remembered a house on the left hand side with a short driveway leading up to it. The road we were travelling along was very wide and I was completely flat out as I came over the brow. As we were in the air I noticed that the owner of the house had changed the shape of the entry to the driveway which mean't it was sticking out considerably more than the year before.
To make matter worse he had also fitted a very sturdy looking iron railing on the outside edge of the driveway.

My terrified mind concluded that at the current trajectory and speed I was likely to hit the end of this railing and end up with two very thin Chevettes. As we approached final descent I realised that it was going to be close and in the deafening cabin silence a loud 'thonk' was heard as we brushed it on the left hand side of the car ( at well over 90mph).

At the end of the selective my navigator could not get out of the car as the inside door handle would not work. I got out and went around to open the door for him, only to find the handle had been neatly and completely taken off. No other damage to the car at all.

We continued and finished 3rd overall.
I try not to think about the consequences of the car being a foot or so more to the left
