if it was not needed, do you really think subaru would spend time and MONEY on fitting something that is not needed. i very much doubt it ....???

But it could be because of EU directives...relating to oil spillage on roads, or small children snared on hot engines. Or the prevention of rodent nests in engine bays. The fact that all cars seem to have them these days suggests it is probably more something like that IMHO.
