JDM's hold their value more than UK cars
that's a fact 
and thats because they are a better car and in more demand.
Spot your average MY03 UK STI, value is 8-9k, same year JDM 9.5-10.5k, depreciates more? nope
To start with, there is a substantial difference in the way both the UK car and the JDM car perform, on average there is 30+bhp difference, the JDM has a MUCH wider power band and is far the more drivable on both open and country roads, earlier JDM cars have A-DCCD and quick rack steering as standard, something that was not standard on UK cars until 2005 (and thats only the A-DCCD as quickrack steering isnt even an option, and it makes a BIG difference in the way the car handles and feels)
As for increasing the rev limit, have you wondered why its set where its set? thats due to the fact the rods/pistons (especially on wrx's) aint up to doing 8k rpm, so it if goes pop, you know why

I know I want the JDM, its just the problem of selling my own car, or finding a JDM owner who's interested in a P/Ex.
There's a UK one that the guy would like to do a P ex with me. Hence the questions.

Maybe the question you are asking then should be - will the UK car be better than the 120d you currently have ?
If you cant find anyone who wants to buy your car, so part ex is the only option, then you can only choose from what is available to swap with.
If it was me, I'd just go and drive the UK car and see if you prefer it to the 120d and not worry about what other cars may be better or worse, as its pretty irrelevant seeing as nobody is offering to swap one of those with you.

Going to have a look at it this evening. We've agreed a price over the phone for if my car is what I said it is, and visa versa.
I had a spin in a friends mapped, de-cat an downpipe MY02 sti yesterday, and i've definately got the bug now. (excuse the pun)
So have you guys got any vital things to check when i look at this MY05 UK type sti later?
Should the DCCD make any noises if turning slowly and tightly on dry tarmac??
Any other pointers are welcome. Thanks

I get a clonk sometimes from the rear during low speed turns from my JDM car which is the rear diff apparently.
Gearing is different on the JDM car; I find 6th a little short for the motorway (it seems to drone more than my old), but I do those journeys rarely.
I also found my modded UK classic more expensive to insure than the 54 JDM newage.

6th is geared to nearly 170mph on a JDM new age, how do you find that short?
To the op, yes the diffs can clunk on slow manouvers in A-DCCD mode, switch to manual and set it all the way to the top green, it should make no noises on that as the diff is fully open

sorry mate i have just picked up a mk1 t25 on a 2005 plate. i have noticed it clonks and wa sworred about it being the ast's on the blink.
so it is the rear diff then, and you say pop it on manual and in the green, is this the same setting as the automatic mode then?
just i am dubious of playing with the settings as i dont want to un settle the car as it is what i am used to,
any pointers on the rear diff settings would be great

Steve, on the green manual setting the diff is fully open, if you leave it in auto it just decides for you so its not normally fully open on slow manouvering, have a play at slow speeds but if in doubt for most of the driving just leave it in auto, it does a very good job but its normal just not on manual fully open (shouldnt clunk at all).

I would still like to know about this bit though if anyone can enlighten me.

I knew everyone would say "Just get the JDM" but i wanted to know the differences.
The option I have is to do a part ex for my 120d Msport and its an 05 UK model.
Had the 120d advertised for a month, about 800-1k cheaper than anything else similar spec of mileage an not a phone call, so I don't have alot of choice unfotunately, otherwise i'd just go for the JDM.
Now for some constructive replies.
Can the UK car have the rev limit raised with a re-map?
Can Uk car easily put out the 350 that can be got from JDM with de-cat and downpipes?

I would recommend them though, lovely little car an the 120d packs serious punch for a 2.0 diesel. With the right map they can make 220bhp and about 380 lb-ft with all standard exhaust turbo etc.
I viewed the Sti last night. Its absoulutely mint. only 19,500 miles. 4 new tires, 2 previous subaru services with another due i think.
1 tiny scuff on the bottom of the back bumper behind the rear right wheel, and 1 of the alloys has a tiny scuff, other than that its just rolled out of the show room.
Another bonus is my 120d is just about out of tax, and the Sti is taxed till may 2010, an the tax here for both is 614 euro!
Once i can sort the insurance I'm gona go for it.
Oh, i switched the diff to manual an left it at the green (bottom) and did a tight slow turn an there was a bit of noise from it.
There was no noise in Auto. This is normal isnt it?
