The best way to explain it, imagine your exhaust banging on the floor of the car. A metallic thumping knocking sound right under your rear seat.

While I was at it, I fitted the uprated cross member bushes. The rear end is solid now, but Ive got vibration noise now with the uprated bushes and subframe bolts fitted. It is a small price to pay for better handling.

Forgot to say, I got the bushes from:

I have just tried to tighten mine, the 17mm was solid and the 2 12mils only moved slightly, i will see tomorrow

i have found mine today aswell its the crossmember bushes on both sides,

how do you replace them? does the crossmember and propshaft have to be droped down or do they come 2 per side 1 to go in top and 1 bottom and just tighten back up?

thanks in advance

I have the same problem with the knocking from under the rear seats. I jacked the car up and checked every bolt I could get my hands on. I shook various parts and there was no knocking coming from anything.

myturbo99 did you manage to fix your knock? If so what did you do in the end with the cross member bushes?

cheers.

something I noticed the other day whilst jackin up the rear of the car - the rear struts (or something, not the jack) was 'creaking' as I raised it. Maybe something just needs some grease?

No its still there as i said further up the thread i tightened the bolts up but it did nothing, I took it to a mates garage and had a good look while it was up on the 4 poster and found the crossmember bushes are fookd, i have spoke to a place that advertise on flee bay and they said the bushes on the impreza are 33mm or 60mm and they cant dispatch any without the correct size,
Has anyone else found this?
I am going to buy both sizes and return the wrong 1 hope this sorts it

Oh and my maf is on its way out just to make sure there is something else to do

Exactly the same thing with mine, Feels as though somthing is going back in to place/ or out of place...

Have you managed to fix this yet? Its been doing my head in for over a yer now

It is coming from the right rear on mine and there are a couple of other symptoms...

next one is when going around tight roundabouts when the right rear is relatively unloaded I get clunks,

Not sure if this is related but when accelerating and turning slightly, coming off the throttle will cause the car to turn in slighty harder, at any speed, slow or high so not under/over stear.

Im going to try that greaseing the suspention link thingy first as this does seem to make sense!

Any more ideas guys?

Ta very much!

Same question to My99turbo? Have you sorted the knocking? Did you get the bushes from ebay (are they the deflex ones)? The MOT guy pointed out that the four bushes attaching the subframe/crossmember to the car were perishing last summer and I'm getting a worstening knocking going round slow corners which I'm putting down to the bushes. I've seen some STi bushes on ebay right now, but think they are for the newage. Mine's also a 99 turbo, so I'm hoping I can save myself some of your hassle

I'll get under it and have a proper some time look now the weather is getting better.

Cheers!

Seeing as this is the rear knocking noise thread, and you've just posted that pic, the other thing that's probably worth mentioning in this neck of the woods is that the edges of the strengthener plate that runs between the sill and the bush can sometimes get distorted upward, either by stones, or by the upkicks on axle stands.

If the plates gets pushed too far up they can contact the crossbeam when it is torqued by the diff either under acceleration, braking or reversing - at least if the standard bushes are fitted. If you've got a noise in this area it's worth checking they're straight - like Slipstream's, rather than bent up at the front and back.

Oh aye, the other obvious thing to check for and rule out is a loose hub nut leading to play in a wheel bearing.
