Just moved into a house that needs a fair bit of modernisation and one of the things that made me happiest was the fact that I could justify spending a good few hundred quid on new tools

Best new tool so far is the router to cut a channel to put cables across the floor.

Every time I come across a job that needs a tool that I dont have, new tool is purchased (within £££ reason). Always end up needing it again at a later date.

 

Not screwdrivers, but I do have a set of poor condition chisels for all kinds of stuff and a new set of Stanleys for proper quality work.

The old chisels did start off life as being meant for good work only, but laziness took over

 

For me these days it seems to be the Dewalt Cordless SDS and 32mm metre long drill bit

I seem to enjoy being shook to bits drilling big holes in walls

 

Why has nobody mentioned air tools?

Now they are just a joy to use, the connoisseurs choice

If you and your neighbour both need to drill a hole in the wall, and the chap from next door comes out with his **** ant electric drill, go into the garage, pull out your compressor, fill that sucker with air, and bring out your air drill, instant win in the tool-trumps stakes, awesome overkill

Your neighbour will look over and think "he is alpha as ****!"

ps. why dont they show that old "Tool Time" program anymore, that was funny

 

If you have old Stanleys, sharpen those up for the quality work and use the new stuff for hacking out. HTH.

I've just bought myself a new bosch 18v cordless. it's almost worth going to w*rk tomorrow to use it.

 

No, they were definitely somo no-name chisels bought a good few years ago. Their fate as bottom of the tool box, jack of all trades scraping at walls type affairs is well and truly sealed

 

I have one full set of Stanley 5002 black-handled bevel-edged chisels for quality work. It's a combination of metric and imperial sizes and they don't make them anymore. It breaks my heart when I get a nick in the cutting edge.

What is worse is when I take a day off work and forget to take my kit home and come back to find those chisels covered in epoxy filler.

 

Im a proper Tool horder.I see it,i buy it even if i dont need it.It was that bad my Ex said she would leave me if i bought anymore tools,or toolboxes.Thats why she is my Ex.

I have loads sitting in my Tool cupboard doing nowt,most not used.I can't go in a tool shop and come out empty handed.

 

I thought this thread was going to be yet another thread about SN's Admin team! But it is actually about useful tools and not the useless tools who police this place

 

The ultimate tool owning validation for any man is the day your dad comes round to borrow one of YOUR tools, rather than you constantly asking him for stuff like you have for the past 20 or 30 years.

I did make a decision a couple of years ago that anything I buy toolwise now will only be really good stuff that will last for years. Having had to get by for years with £10 Halfords multi socket sets and cheap chinese rubbish, there is something satisfying about buying stuff that comes in a proper sturdy metal case and doesn't have all the chrome flake off the first time you use them.

Also just bought a Honda engined Hayter lawnmower to replace the cheap no name one that blew up, and never cut the grass properly.

Self powered, so you dont even need to push it, absolute dream to use, and has a crest on the front that says 'by appointment to HRH the queen' ( although I doubt she whips one round the lawn at the weekend ) - also made in Britain - apart from the engine !.

Now takes about an hour to do the front and back lawns, compared to all morning that the old one took.

 

Why is it I know where all my tools are, but when I actually need to use those sloppy joes they disappear into some alternate universe. Then as soon as I buy another pair the old ones rematerialize

 

I really wish you had not posted thet picture, where can you get one?

One tip is that Halfrauds are giving a free set of good screwdrivers worth £19.57p with a gallon of oil-or should that be 5 litres!

Have to echo the sentiment about the Halford Pro Ratchet spanners, it gives me a little shudder of anticipation every time I get to use it, sadly, only have the 10 millimetre but will be
collecting a few more.

My brother in law has an epic socket set, I borrowed it a while back when at his, had never been used, which to me, is criminal, sockets should be gnarled, greasy and full of black gunk inside.
