The only way to build resistance to any disease is to be exposed to it!

The flu will kill weak, ill, or people with poor living conditions in poor countries which funnily enough mexico is It will not kill healthy humans in the western world due to better living conditions, food and medicines.

Stop being ridiculous and take the kid to school, i doubt you would take the kids out if it was "normal " flu.

Anyway it's illegal to take kids out of school in term time

A few stats:

300 deaths in June worldwide, and 100 in May.

UK Cases in June - 7000, and in May - 400

Any ideas what Julys figures may look like?

This flu is gathering pace.....if you all think it's scare mongering, then let me have the first lot of tamiflu!

To add some perspective though....

about 1.5 million people die worldwide in road traffic accidents each year. Over 7 million people die each year from heart disease, over 2 million die from HIV /AIDS, 1.5 million from lung cancer and yet the world population continues to grow. Until we are loosing 10 million people worldwide in a year to this flu I wont be getting too excited.

It's just flu. Do you worry about catching flu normally? Probably not so don't worry. Only people dying of it are people who are sick already ...

One could also suggest that you should stop being a sheep and saying the media hype things up.

I'm doing reading, sifting through the crap, conducting risk analysis and I'm still concerened.

I'd be very happy to be proved wrong and no SNers get swineflu.

Well it may not be long before the choice is taken away from you since 'swine' flu has started to become resistance to the drug oseltamivir used in Tamiflu.

Increasingly looking like handing out aniseed twists might be every bit as effective as the medicines that are currently being sold!

It has been blown up out of proportion by the media of course, sells papers I suppose.

By all accounts it is pretty mild at the moment anyway and we shall have to hope it does not become seriously virulent as time goes by.

It seems that all those who have been seriously affected by it so far have had some underlying health problems.

Thats true. The Gov's policy has moved from containment to the treatment of swine flu. Tests are no longer carried out and Tamiflu is handed out (free) to people who display the symptoms of this flu.

Its expected to become more virulent this winter and if so will leave the general population with little option for treatment. I see a shortage in the availability of the flu jab this winter as everyone scrambles to get this treatment.

It doesn't matter if we get it or not ... it's just flu!

Have you ever had flu? Were you worried about it beforehand? Why are you worried now?

friend of mine thought he had it (wife feeling ill, child at school with it etc) - they all had tamiflu and he says it made him feel awful - upset stomach, headaches etc. turned out there was nothing wrong with him - I also won't be taking tamiflu.

Tamiflu isn't supposed to make you feel better. It's supposed to attack the virus and prevent it from multiplying and spreading. To reduce the symptoms, take Lemsip of similar.

I like to think I read between the lines.

......I still hope I am wrong and it's media hype, I just feel there is more to it than that. Todays news does not make me feel any better!

It, on its own (with no other symptoms) isn't meant to make you feel ill, however!

It's an anti-viral, linked to a different strain of flu, and arguably has limited effect. Flu viruses mutate pretty quickly - hence there's never been a real vaccine for one, as by the time a vaccine is sorted, the virus has mutated such that it's not much use.

From a tamiflu website:

"Tamiflu has been studied only in strains of influenza that were circulating at the time. The magnitude of effect of Tamiflu in treating and preventing novel strains of influenza (such as those that may be involved in a pandemic or associated with avian flu) cannot be predicted.

Tamiflu has not been proven to have a positive impact on the potential consequences (such as hospitalizations, mortality, or economic impact) of seasonal, avian, or pandemic influenza "

I'll take my chances with the flu, thanks.

So your friend says tamiflu made him feel awful. All drugs have side effects and each drug can affect individuals in differently and doesn't necessarily mean you'll suffer the same side effects, just like this flu has different level of severity for each individual.

I'm not advocating that everyone should take it, everyone should have that choice. I took it to reduce the chance of it spreading to my wife and children, even if it supposedly has limited affect, though in my instance, it seems to have worked as my family have not shown any symptoms.

This may be nothing more to worry about than normal flu, but who knows how bad it will get, as it seems to be picking up pace.

I'm a little annoyed though, that someone at my work has been diagnosed with it, and although off sick now, people may have been exposed, yet noone saw fit to let us know we may be at risk.

Now, if you take Scrappys theory one step further you might be close to whats going on in the world......

Swine flu, comes from a combination of man, bird and pig...Ok.
Released, sorry, the outbreak in a small Mexican village.
Within weeks, global pandemic, but it's not killing enough peeps.
Now there's a new strain, released, sorry discovered....

Remember a few years ago, the aids virus.........

We worked in a classroom in a school in Rochdale the other day where the Teacher and a child both had swine flu diagnosed, we still carried out the work

We worked in Handsworth school when the 44 kids were off with it

I dont really see it as an issue tbh as long as relevant precautions are taken

obviously the school werent too bothered as they let us work there, and we are back there tomorrow
