And now you have a rattly noise under your gearbox

When the old Scoobs gearbox was rebuilt by API, I had an Exedy clutch dropped in for god measure. Had a bit of judder for the first 1000-1500 miles, but a couple of gentle launches (around 3-4k revs) cleared it up well. My flywheel wasn't skimmed as I was told it didn't need to be.

I'd have thought the higher the uprated clutch, the more you have to compromise on easy usability, if that makes sense?

You need to check if it is an exeedy uprated as there are many copys being sold in the pink boxes which are rubbish , i have a exeedy uprated in the pink box the 6 spring type fitted with new subaru flywheel by prosport in stockport was told i would have slight judder for the first 1000 ish miles as he said there was judder initially but after a 1000 miles it is like a normal clutch with no judder at all on a 2002 sti 320bhp. Just depends where you sorce them from .

If it is an exedy flywheel and clutch kit then they are balanced as 1 and have marks that need to be lined up or you get clutch judder and end up killing your engine

I'll try and get some pics up later

Same problem on my MY04 STI. Fitted a Stage 1 Organic Racing clutch last week, the flywheel was left untouched since it seemed ok. Now has quite a bit of judder, especially when reversing. Already did a few hard launches, which seemed to make it a bit better, but still far from ok.

There's a slight vibration on the clutch pedal, to me that sounds like the whole package is not completely in balance?

BTW, I thought Exedy made the STI clutches !? Same sh*t, just different packaging?

EDIT: Oh yes, and the clutch also smells like he*l when launching. And now I mean completely normal launches...

Clutch judder is sometimes caused by wear on the flywheel but there are several other reasons too.
I imported a clutch and had nothing but judder from it and although it had a new flywheel I concluded it was an issue with the clutch springing. So what was potentially a bargain became an expensive mistake.
I know that Exeddy had problems with clutch judder some time ago and this was resolved by a change in the design of the friction plate. There was a very heated thread (debacle) on here at the time and it appears that Exeddy Europe were not up to date with what Exeddy in Japan were doing.
If the problem is not down to the flywheel surface then perhaps you have an old design friction plate.

Tnx for your input Harvey !
Spoke to the workshop earlier today, and decided to ditch this clutch, completely. Will re-install the old pressure plate (has done about 70.000 km, but it looks almost like new!) with a new 03 STi disc and see if that works any better.
Got this Exedy set cheap off eBay. Cheap and good has never been known to come in the same package, so I guess this is once again one of those "should have known better" cases....

Cheers Miki. You guys over there OK?
With a photo of the clutch friction plate I can probably confirm if it is the current design but the judder problem I refer to was on five speed clutches and there will be old five speed stock getting moved on somewhere down the supply chain.

I had the clutch judder problem with my previous car(RB5) i think at the time you said it was probably the old design clutch. Is the new style of exedy organic clutch better then?same price?do you have in stock?

On my old MY96 sti i used an exedy friction plate mated to a AP racing pressure plate worked wonders i had a few niggly judders at the start but after 1500 miles no judder at all. (Friction Plate was 4 spring type though)

I checked with the seller, and they replied that a juddering and smelling clutch is a know issue with this type of Racing clutch. The reason is that "The Racing organic plate is uncushioned to resist burst at high RPMs".

Well, I don't know if I'm completely happy with that, but I think I will after all change only the driven plate to a Subaru OEM one, and keep the Exedy pressure plate. Maybe...
