I know I'm not the first to say this and I doubt I'll be the last, but I'm not sure how I've gone all these years and never found the time to read this thread up until now.
I think to take the time to sit down and read through 8 years of posts in one hit only served to make it all the more epic although there's a part of me that wishes I could have been there from the start, to follow it with the same level of loyal, eager anticipation as everyone else, but you know what they say- 'better late than never.'

The whole thread has made for such an awe-inspiring and captivating read, watching the evolution of- what I think we can all agree is- an iconic and revered Subaru and one of the most renowned Bugeyes to ever grace the enthusiast community.
It's crazy to think this started out as such a humble affair, with the intention to make a few minor tweaks here and there with the outcome to remain 'fairly standard'- although there were some who already knew from the 'get-go' that mentality wouldn't last.

It's taken me a fair old while, but I can finally sit back, up to date with this more than impressive build thread and await the next instalment with the equal vigour as all those before me.

I wish I could offer more or a response, but I know I am only repeating what 100's have said before me when I praise the sheer dedication, meticulous skill and attention to detail that has gone into-and continues to go into-every single stage of this project.
I commend you Frayz, not just for your patience and persistent determination when it comes to the sourcing of numerous 'rocking-horse-poop' parts over the years, being so damn set in your ways that you'll never settle for 2nd best; a quality I along with many others admire you for, but for also having the patience to keep us all updated on every single step of the way.
The whole build has been a bit of a roller-coaster to say the least- I should imagine only dramatised in potency as a result of reading it all in one go- from start to current day with it's fair share of speed bumps in the midst of it all.
I'm honoured to say I've had the pleasure of seeing this car in the metal (as mentioned in post #3362- I can look back fondly and say 'I was there.') back when The Bomber adapted her previous 'completed' form that would go on to grace the pages of Banzai Magazine, a form that was a feat of engineering and beauty in itself, making it almost scary to behold her current state in comparison. However, it's apparent by now that you clearly know what you are doing, so I'm sure the result of her time at Dave's will make for an even greater spectacle, further propelling both car and owner to a 'Legendary status'.


So, for fear of rambling on, I conclude by simply saying; Great work Frayz, you truly are an inspiration to so many- myself included- keep it up! I eagerly await the next update and finally- *subscribed*

Not really sure what I can say to that Zo. I'm truly very humbled that you have even managed to find the time to read even some of this thread, leave alone all of it. I'm even more touched you wrote such a humbling response.

It sure has been an amazing 10 years of ownership, with more ups and downs that you can shake a stick at. I dare say you read many of my own contradictions along the way:

"I'm not modding it much"
"I'm not stripping it out"
"I won't cage it"

To name a few.

Inititially I was gutted with the performance of the car compared to the Cosworth and for years all I wanted to to try and fill the old cossies shoes. In all honesty it took me to at least 400bhp before I felt I was anywhere close.
It's been 10 years of development and my own expression of what i am trying to achieve. This last 10 years has also allowed me to meet some of the nicest people and best friends I have ever had. This car means more to me for so many more reasons than any car ever should.

All the well known cars within the circles have evolved over the years and I guess they never die, they just get faster.

This latest development is far and away my bravest move to date by some margin. As you well know, when you saw her last. To completely cut up a car that is my blood, sweat and tears for so long may be seen by many as beyond Insanity. She was basically as perfect as a fast road Impreza is ever likely to be.

But perfection take ons many forms and I truly believe nothing is ever perfect...



Yet some of us are crazy enough to keep trying.

I understand your sentiment completely Frayz, I've had mine now for 11-12 years and despite it spending more time off the road than on (due to my infernal tinkering) it has been more of a lfiestyle choice than I ever expected.

As for keeping up, I gave up a long time ago but if you if ever fancy donating your lump (complete with turbo and gearbox) to a good cause I can make a really good shell to keep them warm

Gonna be a long long road from here but at least once the shell is done I can concentrate on getting the rest of her built. The shell is where all the work is and its why its taken so long.

 

Yours has been really quick compared to a similar build I know about lol ,,but your 100% about the shell needing all the work and taking the time as I was shocked at how much gets replaced from the road car we all buy lol , just the easy part of buying all the mentally expensive parts for her after mate ��

Well what with the flood of competition machinery in and out of the workshop my car hasn't had an update in a while.
However pleased to show the offside rear qtr panel has been made and the tub work done.
All in steel hand formed and rolled.
She's ticking along in the background and getting closer and closer to getting that final run on the spit.
Qtr panel on this side is just resting in place for now but give a good idea as to how she will look. The scale of the size of a WRC wheel well is quite apparent when you look side on compared to that of a road car. They fully protrude into the rear door aperture.
I think it looks mega and is a credit to Daves hard work and attention to detail.

Looking good mate ,, mines back over next month and about time lol ,, iv gone for the carbon rear outer skin now that they used on the S11 (Dave said I think but I could be wrong lol) , all my metal panels are made up ready (3rd lot he has done for me lol) but I thought the extra weight saving would be a good idea so went with it , so now we have to cut off all my panels again lol,, Daves loves it though lol

 

Does Dave make the panels himself as well?

Yes Iain, Dave makes the panels by hand from sheet.
It's quite simple really.
A competition car that is actively competing takes president over mine that is just a road car that doesn't have a time frame on it.
Active competition cars come first, that's it.

 

What sort of tooling does he use for that?

 

All by hand and rolled Neil.

All panel gaps and snagging will be dressed and set before final prep and paint.

Looking lovely. Can I ask Frayz how accurate you are going with this WRC tarmac replica? You've ticked all the boxes on the shell and suspension, but are you going as far as WRC solid mounting the subframes etc to maximise performance but compromise ride? Or is it somewhere inbetween?

 

Going to try and blur the lines as much as I can mate. Daves doing an amazing job on the shell so far so once that's done I can concentrate on the rest as I can make funds stretch.

 

Don't blame you. You need to reach a happy compromise for a road car. I love the feel of a proper race or rally car with everything solid or poly mounted as it just feels so direct on the road, but in equal measures you can't do that to a road car without spoiling it. Your suspension choice should give you a very compliant car to drive anyhow.


Shell looks the nuts. Just wonderful craftsmanship!

 

Popped over to see Dave on Wednesday and things are moving along nicely with your car mate , even offered to lend a hand to Dave on some of the prep for your motor as iv got a big incentive to get yours done as Dave isn't starting mine again until your finished , so you may see me over there at some point
