Well i went into my local O2 branch and what a complete waste of time it was! The girl serving knew **** all about them and when i asked her about the differences she just simply read off the display cards (which i'm quite capable of doing myself). I then asked if the 3G on the Bold much better than WiFi etc? To which she replied "they both have 3G" At that i thought i'm wasting my time and left. She was terrible and i would'nt pay her in washers...

So i'm still no further on in my quest, but i did like the look/feel of the curve. I found the buttons easy to press ( no fat fingers here ) and it didnt feel too chunky in my hand!

So basically, the main differences between the Bold and the Curve is that the Bold has 3G and a bigger screen? Is that realistically it??

 

AK, to use any data on the phone you will need to be signed up to a BIS data plan, regardless of if its PUSH or anything else you are using.
Sadly to make it work as a Blackberry you need to pay someone for their data services.

Gav, in short the main differences are..

Bold = bigger with 3G, ok camera
8900 = smaller without 3g. Better camera

Both have WiFi so both can take advantage of wireless zone, or home wireless routers etc
As I have said, personal choice is 8900.

Oh 3G and WiFi cant really be compared. If you are in a wireless zone either can use the wifi. The comparison is between 2 and 3g, in some cases 2.75G and 3 G
The difference... in my opinion, not enough to worry about, especially if its just for general browsing etc.

Personally I would say for an annual fee of so little, it will give you so much. Especially if you are going to make the most of having a BB.
I actually manage to have evenings like a normal person these days, not sitting on the PC for a couple of hours getting caught up in things.
Simply answer emails when I get them, then move on

Quickly look on the net for things, again rather than getting emersed in other things that get my attention, aka distractions. lol

Personally I love having the BB now, but I dont pay much for mine.

I'm not overly fussed about the camera, the novelty of one of them wore off a while ago. As long as it's decent enough With 3G and 2G can you get the service pretty much anywhere or is it in and out depending where you are? Say in the middle of Manchester it will be fine but when i go home to a far far less populated area is it still as good? We have wireless Wifi at home so thats no problem

 

OK you have almost answered your own question in a sense. 3G is not perfect coverage and gets worse out in the sticks, so you cant really be assured of constant good 3G service.
2G suits me fine, SN loads within 15-20 secs inc images, which is more than good enough for popping onto websites etc, obviously computers are better for long term browsing etc. For email, regardless of coverage being 2-3G or WiFi its super fast and works lovely.

Camera can come in handy believe it or not, as sending pictures via BBM are free, so while talking to friends across the pond etc, its great for sending pictures of where you are, and fun things.... daft I know.

That said, the camera on my 8320 takes some cracking pictures, but obviously its only used for opportunist pics, the 350D is for real pics

The 2G coverage will be wider spread than the 3G, so if you like the weight and size of the 8900, and live in a thinner covered 3G area.... the 8900 is the one for you.

The curve is looking more and more favorable right now, which has suprised me! When i was holding the two in my hand in the (crap) O2 shop the curve did feel better and i wondered if the leather back on the bold would be a pain in the *** getting it in and out of my pocket!!

The curve is just nice in the hand fullstop, and as an all round package, is my favorite. That said, both are very good
You might find yourself using a case once you get going lol I have (sad huh) So the back of the Bold will be less hassle.

As for 3G..... over rated ! see what you think, you might be shocked.

It seems the 3G signal is good around my area and most places i frequent!

Aaaaargh i don't know what to do, i'd hate to get the curve and regret not having 3G for one reason or another but i don't want to ge the bold and be hacked off with it's size! Why can't the curve have 3G, it would be sooooo easy then!!!!

How often would you be using the BB for data/ browsing on the move away from WiFi?

Like I say, for checking websites, using Yell.com and other such services the 2G has been fine.

If in doubt, get the Curve 8900 for a week, if you cant live without the 3G tell them you dont want the curve (contract cool off) return it and get the Bold

Hows that for a solution?

I am a bold fan but I wouldn't say it is worth having over another phone just for 3G. As snazy says the difference in performance really is minimal. If you prefer the size and keypad go for the curve.

Cheers guy's, think i'll give the Curve a try and if i find the 2G a problem round here i'll take it back and get a Bold. Job done!

But before i go, what are these new devices you speak of Snazy? Have you heard anything about them?

 

Well I'm loving the bold and am on it now. I can't tell the difference between 2 and 3g and so have the latter switched off to conserve battery. I would just buy the one you like the feel of the best.

I'm just glad I listened to snazy, chop and others and went for the blackberry

Agree totally with what Chop says, unless you NEED 3G for a function 2G can't handle, its not really a deal breaker.

The Niagara looks great but the lack of Wifi puts me off a bit. Think i'll stick with the curve

 

Yeah I would still say go for the 8900, seeing as there is no date for the Niagara yet either. Might as well get started on Blackberryism

Here's a couple of questions for you snazy

1. On my calendar when I view the month, appts appear as a tiny dot to let me know I have something booked. Is there any way of making that indicator bigger or bolder as I can hardly see it.

2 . On the internet if I am at the top of a page, is there anyway of going straight to the bottom without having to scroll all the way down?

I share your pain with the calender, so set mine to weekly view most of the time, and also book things for a longer period of time than actually for, so it appears larger lol.
There are some 3rd party calenders out there to use instead, but I have not used it yet as I tend to actually watch my diary via Outlook, so can see up and comings.

Not much help I know, but all I know lol, will check CB for more info though.

Scrolling down, again nope not that I have found, although I believe Opera Mini offers an "end" option to get to the bottom of the page, and also you can just zoom out of the page, scroll to the bottom and zoom back in.

Again I shall have a dig about for you

Calendar is one of the (few) things that bugs me about the 8900.... prefer the n95 method where if you scroll to the day in month view it pops up the appts for that day...
Wish someone did that for BB tbh... not a fan of those horrible 'today' themes which have the calendar on the home screen
