I was caught out by a temporary smog speed limit outside Brussels. Nothing to do with poor visibility it was the Belgian attempt to reduce emissions. They dropped the speed limit to 90kmph (56mph) on the motorway. I ended up in the back of a police van and relieved of the cash. In a way I was lucky as had I been going 6kmph faster I would have been banned. Be warned people.

Edit: If any of you are coming to the Ring this year let me know, I'm working at the track and I'll see what I can do for you.

Hi Pezzza My wife wants to drive the ring in our scooby (spose i`ll have to have ago aswell). If you let us know when you decide to go we could probably get lost over there together. I can feel a convoy coming on & maybe a group booking. What do you reckon?

Get registered on :: northloop.co.uk :: we're not playing games :: nurburgring galleries and more ::

There are loads of people on there willig to give advice on everything needed for a good 'ring' trip.

I personally would avoid a weekend, as the Ring has been getting very busy at the weekends due to the influx of everyone at the weekend.

When we wnet to Germany last year, we went on a Monday and we didn't even have to queue to get on.

Also, if there is a bad 'off', they WILL close the track, so get there early

Thanks for the heads up Mark. At least you were only relieved of cash and not your liberty
Were they clearly marked up or were they hidden from view till it was too late?

We are looking to come over this year probably around September for a long weekend.
I'll definately pm you nearer the time

Satnav set to Nurburg is good enough to get you close enough to the main entrance, once in Nurburg you can stop and have a Weissbier and some grub at Sabine Schmitz family owned pub/bar .

Cost of a lap (when we were there last August) was around €21 or 4 laps €70, if a load do go, it is worth working out how many laps are going to be done within the group and buy the tickets as a bulk purchase.

If you are planning on living on the ring, you can however buy an annual ticket (valid Jan-Dec) for €995 , I think from what I was told, a few forces guys in Germany do this, and spend their weekends at the Ring

You shouldn't need additional insurance above European cover, as the ring is officially classified as a 'one way toll road', insurance companies will argue against this, but they are wrong. Parts of the track do now have speed restrictions, and they do enforce them.

If you are going to fit a camera in the car, use a bullet cam , I got told to take my camera off the windscreen when I went out and couldn't be bothered to fix it to the screen again, I just wanted to get round the ring

If you go .......... Enjoy 'Green Hell'

Costs of a trip depend on your budget.

Crossings: I prefer Norfolkline, Dover-Dunkerque, £40-50 return. 2hr crossing but less driving the other side. It's about 4hrs drive from Dunkerque.

Hotels: I used to stay at the Blaue Ecke in Adenau and paid €50 per person per night, they have a guest house which was slighty cheaper.

Laps: Average noob will do 15 laps in an average week.

Insurance: Grey area, 99% will exclude it or have a clause saying they will pay out for 3rd party damage but look to recover their costs from you. There are companies that will cover but often, like Moris, they only cover the rolling chassis and no 3rd party cover.

Crashing: Expensive. Armco €100 per metre (inc. removal, new armco, admin fees etc.), track closure - €1500 per hour. Recovery on track €200 unless you have ADAC breakdown cover. You spill fluid and people crash then you are responsible for all damage and injures, the last thing you want is a motorcyclists crashing/Veyron crashing on your fluid.

You can hire cars from me and they are fully insured for the track, prices start at €149.

Filming in cars is banned. Depending on the circumstance the punishment can be anywhere from being asked to stop filming to being banned from the track.

If you're going to do more than 65 laps best of buying a Jahreskarte (season ticket) and this runs from Jan-Dec.

Sat Nav address for the Nordschleife entrance is Nürburg, 53520

Lap timing - The curse of Clarkson... I would refrain from timing, asking for trouble in my opinion and will invalidate your insurance. I did a couple of hundred laps last year and didn't time a single one.

Hi Mark - thanks for all the info - makes very interesting reading!

I am curious to know what vehicles / costs you hire out at the track? Is there a website I can look at that has these details on?

Are these left or right hand drive?

Many thanks again.

I would take this advice with a pinch of salt. Every insurance company will word their policy differently. It's down to the individual to read their policy T&C's. I'm aware of a large claim going through the ombudsman at the moment that a lot of people are keeping a close eye on.

Yes there sections with speed limits (Breidscheid entrance/exit & Dottinger Hohe entrance/exit) however I've never seen them enforced
