new wheels... 5x100 off an STi8 i think. Supposed to be 8" wide, but think they are 7.5". Not too fussed about that as long as they clear the brake calipers.
Stripped the headers and inlet off my old block to tidy them up. Had a look in the heads and there appears to be some headwork (confirm/deny?). Valve seats cut back, a bit of porting.... the cams look to be pretty wild too with the amount of lift on the valves (accordign to Russ).
AFP 20G still appears in good nick, but will prob be needing cleaned/checked out after bearing failure
Ok... headers off (any ideas on brand?) and will wrap them
Inlet off, stripped, old red paint cleaned off and its currently in the dishwasher
oh, and any ideas whats going on with the ICV? The ICV has 4 bolt holes, but the inlet only 3. The inlet looks a little butchered around it too :S

great write up, i have enjoyed reading it. couple of questions though adam. i have noticed you seem to be doing most of the work on the car yourself. are you a mechanic or are you reading off a manual? what is the hardest thing to fit, thatyou have came across on the car? reason i am asking is i would like to take up a project but i am slightly put off by huge labour costs.

i'm not a mechanic, just dont like paying too much labour costs!
I dont build my engines.... not yet anyway. Dont have anywhere clean enough in my opinion (other than in the house which just wouldnt happen!)
Most stuff is common sense or been there done that on a different car/engine over the years. If you dont try stuff you'll never learn anything.

Headers wrapped.....
away for an itch now :|
Can anyone give a guide price for stripped STiV4 block halves, complete heads and cams? And a price for a bottom end damaged STi V4 engine with heads still attached.

Adam,
As a reference point. I've just bought a complete STI V4 engine that has had a bottom end failure for £450. The engine was complete i.e with heads, inlet manifold cam covers etc still attached. I thought that was a bargain. The heads should fetch that on their own.
I wanted it as a donor engine for all the little things that i'd struggle to source foir the P2 build i'm doing
Hope that's of use
Daz

Peggy - none at all but it didnt see much use before engine failure, but the pipes to it have seen some oil. I made the pipes a bit larger in diameter to slow the oil down - I think most goes back into the engine.
Daz - ta. Sold the heads on ebay for £100 but the buyer is a **** and still hasnt paid. I'd actually rather keep them as spares at that price. See what happens.
My flowed/cam'd heads are due to get rebuilt/checked soon and the turbo is off for inspection. So will just be sticking to around 400bhp for now.
Will need a 6spd before changing turbo to get around 500bhp on the CDB lateral 2.1.

going to stock up on fluids for this (type R, DCCD etc) just now... any problems with these
Gearbox - Silkoline silktran syn 5 (whats the capacity of the GB?)
Rear Diff - Silkoline BOA 90 LS (1 litre yes?)
The gearbox, front and centre diff share the same oil yes? Is the centre diff LS type? If so whats the best fluid to suit all 3 :S

Heads....
The heads that were on my last engine, and intended to use on my new lateral 2.1 were sent to RCM for a refresh - (ported, and race cam'd V3 heads)
Here's what they have to say about them.
Thinking sensibly I tend to agree with there opinions. The face does look pretty damn rough, and the journals scored. Can anything be done to fix these problems, and is it actually cost effective to do so?
here are the pics of them (v3 heads)
I have spare heads (v4 STi heads)(tried to sell them but encountered an non-paying EBAY idiot...)
Have a look at these pics. They look in better condition, but one cam cap is damaged/missing (is this as big a problem as some folk make out?)
The cam journals are pretty smooth, just some dust in them (the heads havent been stripped and cleaned since removing from 2nd last engine)

Here's what they have to say about them.
Given what they are planned to be used for I would not recommend that they are suitable for the application for the following reasons:
• They have previously been skimmed and sadly the skim has been exceptionally “rough” leaving numerous scores in the head faces which can be felt with your thumb nail.
• The seats on the head where the camshafts rotate in are more worn / scored than usual suggesting that the engine the heads belonged to has suffered bearing failure at some point. As I am sure you are aware when an engine bearing fails debris is created and then carried around the engine via the oil ways and this can lead to excess wear to any parts exposed to the oil. In the case of these heads they appear to have seen their fair share of debris hence why we would not deem them suitable for any high powered project.
• There is also some evidence of deterioration around the inner combustion area between the valve seats and spark plug entry area which has resulted in minor cracks. Again not ideal for a high power / performance project.

non picture update (as didnt have my camera this morning)
Engine is built, heads fitted, manifolds on - and ready to drop into the car.
Engine - Forged Lateral 2.1 CDB
Heads - SMG V4 heads with supertec in/ex valves, titanium springs/caps/seats, piper race cams
Turbo - TD rebuild 20G that was on before - 'running in' turbo.
Hopefully will be ready to run it in later this week, but more likely next week.

I'd love to....
I'm away to deepest darkest russia (Sakhalin Island) for a couple (poss 3) of weeks as of next week. I'll prob get back on the 27th knowing my luck!
toot toot, looking manky and sorry for itself. Bits missing off it that were swiped as spares for Skyline etc. Will have to try and get Fee to run the engine in for me LOL

fire it up - check it
some easy miles with low boost (upto 0.5 perhaps) on mineral oil - change oil out. (will prob do this after 200miles of road. Maybe do it on dyno though)
Then another 600-800miles with more boost (up to about 1 bar) - on mineral.
Then swap it out for normal oil, then do the mapping proper.
