I have a feeling older Hotmail accounts have POP enabled, I know mine used to and remember getting notification that as I was using it already there would be no charge. Might be worth a look.

Push email & GPS are both battery killers - I only use fetch every hour which is good enough for me - GPS & Bluetooth off by default too.

I think I will need to do some setting up with this, or I have just realised the iPhone may not have been the best solution.

I've sorted the emails out so I can connect from either Outlook or iPhone, but I've realised that both inbox's are now way out of date with each other since starting work this morning, so any new emails into Outlook are not on my phone, and any deletes in Outlook are not transferred either.

I really thought the iPhone would do inbox syncing with Outlook, even my 6 year old PDA does that!!

If I move over to gmail, do I have to have a gmail.com account, or can you use your own domain? Can you use Outlook with Gmail as well as I need my calendar?

As nice as the iPhone is, I'm beginning to think from a business perspective it was perhaps not the best choice, shame.

Hmm good thread as my Voda contract is up soon and Im looking for a new phone. I normally go for a practical to carry phone as after the gadgets wear off I just text & call. However I must admit the unlimited data does sound good for those moments stuck on the train, car, shopping with the mrs etc. My girlfriend works for 02 and friends & family rates are approx 30% off the line rental but nothing off the handset. My only concern is reception at home as my work phone is 02 and its always cutting out whereas Voda is fine.

It's ncie to have in your pocket, as it's much thinnner than any phone I've had in the past, which was a nice surprise.

It's a super phone/media package, I just wish the email handling was better without me having to transfer all my domains over etc.

Trying using IMAP instead of POP. All of your clients and web access will be in sync. Titan may have great IMAP support but I doubt it hence my suggestion of using Google.

You can absolutely use your own domain, get started with the link I posted earlier and yes you can use Gmail with Outlook.

And rest assured you'd be having the same fun with any phone, but they'd be ugly as well.

So if I sign up for Google Apps, I can just transfer my domain and emails over to that and use their mail server for all my emails? I'm assuming my website & hosting won't be affected by it as that is osted together with the email now?

And by changing the default account in Outlook to the gmail details I can just continue to receive email into Outlook as normal, as well as using my Outlook calender as normal, including syncing the Outlook calendar with the iPhone? I then setup the Gmail info on the phone and that will work alongside Outlook?

Definately interesting, and this cloud stuff is the future of information so it may be a good time to get started with it.

It's very simple, you need to log in to your domain host - where you purchased your domain name - and change the MX records, this points any mail sent to <you@yourdomain.com> to the google servers where you can pick them up via web mail, your iphone and Outlook. Everything else works as normal. If you set up the Google account in Outlook before you change the records you won't notice the change.

Here's a link to all the info you need Configuring MX records - Google Apps Help it even has specific instructions for lots of domain hosts.

It's then very simple to import all of your old mail into your new Gmail using POP3.

I've moved numerous accounts of various sizes onto the Google servers, all with great success.

Sorry, one last thing. I just want the Gmail app, so do I need the full Google Apps sign up, or should I just sign up for a Gmail account?

I've also just read something that says any mails sent have the "From" address as you@gmail.com on behalf of you@yourdomain.com.

Is that still the case? If so, that would be no good for business use as I just need it to show the business email.

That is the case with a standard Gmail account but sign up for Google Apps for Domains on the link I gave earlier and I can assure you that your email will look 'normal' I'll send you an email if it helps

By signing up to Google Apps you get a lot of other great stuff too, Google Calendar for example is synced with my desktop, if I'm out and about I can still have full access. I store copies of all my documents on Google Docs, again full remote access and great online forms for Spreadsheets. Google Sites is a bit rubbish - for me - you used to get Pages which was nicer but has now been removed. All of the above you can either use or not.

All setup on Google Apps now, and my email is all in sync with each other!! It's great deleting a mail off the iPhone and then seeing it disappear from Outlook, exactly what I was wanting from the off!!

Just need to sort out my Calendars etc now, although I have Outlook 2002 so can't sync with Google. (Time to upgrade the PC )
