I've lived in London for over 6 years now and never had a single problem. Never been mugged, abused, beaten up or even gobbed off to, and I've been to some of the renowned rougher parts - Brixton, Peckham, New Cross in some seriously messy states at all hours. Christ, me and my sister both live in one of the alleged "rougher" estates in Hackney. Because of our jobs, we both regularly walk through it between 11pm and 2am alone and feel perfectly safe. It's all about how you portray yourself. Confident without being cocky and most people leave you alone. I've even had groups of youths round tghe estate ask my help with sorting out their cars and so on. It's just got a bad rep because people keep insisting on believing the drivel the Daily Mail and Express forces on it's disillusioned readers. The only reason there's more crime here is because there's more people. Crime-per-person is no worse than anywhere else in the country.
thats a very good point you made, but il tell you what ive been living in tottenham for over 18 years i even work in tottenham, i know parts of it ill be cool but some parts of it with all this new youth that are out to make a name for them self it can be intimidating even for me. brixton and hackney has some trendy bars due to great access of the victoria line but when you wonder deeper in to south london, hackney and even in tottenham broad water farm ring a bell i doubt that you could walk through there and not be approched by a crack head, street shooter, a group of youths. i would love to see you walk around broad water farm with while talking on your phone...
working as an estate agent i get to see the whole of tottenham 6 days a week and so often i see kids on the road getting muged, sign posts by police asking for witnesses to come forward and thats everywhere in tottenham.
maybe the guys in your block dont bother you cause you know where they live but if you wasnt from that area you would realy have some problems....
I have a friend who worked over there in her gap year. She was robbed 3 times in 9 months. They had to put bars on their windows to protect themselves from the people they were trying to help.

it a tough one if you look everywhere in the world apart from the middle east, there is a lot poverty across asia, south america and america.
with most of these black countries apart from the west indian islands they dont have anything. at least in jamica and the other islands there is high tourism so there is always jobs and business not to say there isnt any poverty there, there is but not to the extent of places in africa.
the reason crime/poverty is so high in africa was because we colonised in other words robbed them for all there minerals, gold ,steel, dimonds you name it. as much as i hate to admit it if my family mum, dad, brothers and sisters were starving or even say my kids and i was in somewhere thats deprived where there is no work to be found then i would proberly be forced to resort to crime. doesnt make it right but people have to survive..
any minute some one is going to say luton is roughest place in the world .lol
you make me laugh

Whoever really thinks Luton Town is a ghetto or can actually be included in a top 10 of WORLD's roughest area's has seriously got to get out more!
Having been in and out of Luton for the past 5 years, it's such a nice little town compared to some other areas, everyone's friendly, and people actually smile and say hello unlike here in London.
There will always be trouble everywhere, but bar fighting and brawling would not constitute a ghetto. Ghetto's are normally comprised of seriously neglected and underprivelaged people, most of whom don't have jobs and have no money for food, causing them (rightly or wrongly) to turn to crime for money.
There are scarce areas in the UK which could constitute such a title.

I haven't seen Louis Theroux do an episode about Luton yet, have you?......And Mus, fair point. I haven't ever been to Tottenham, but I have heard it's quite 'king bad round there and East Ham. Wasn't trying to make it sound like I'm tough-as-old-boots, just giving my opinion going on my experiences.
If there is not a sea change in the way that so many parents cannot be bothered to bring up their children in the first place, or that schools and parents are allowed to discipline their children in an effective manner, or that the authorities start to cope properly with the crime wave and violent crime that we see these days, then we will descend into utter lawlessness which will be impossible to control.

Luton, London....Kids play
Glasgow has to be the UK's most violent city, as it has the 2nd highest murder rate in Europe...
Scotland has second highest murder rate in Europe | UK news | The Guardian
2.33deaths per 100k compared to 0.7deaths per 100k south of the borderline.
That is over 3x
A lot of todays gangsters think they're 'hard' because they walk around with guns, half of them wouldn't be able to punch their way out of paper bags.

From what I saw of Swaziland, it seemed a total contrast to SA
I was only there for four days, but I drove through it on a bus - everyone...and I mean EVERYONE you passed waved at the bus!
(the cynical man inside me thinks behind the smile and freindly wave they are really thinking "rich b*****d tourists, if only I could afford a AK47" )

in london any one can be some one the main thing is never under estimate anyone as most kids out there are out to make a name for them selfs you just got to make sure that your not that example. london can be a very intermedating place if you think il keep to myself to myself an il be fine some times that can work against you. so you got to know how to react to certain incidents. one wrong reaction can be your last reaction you ever going to make.
