did this earlier this year when the customers 'other' decorator pulled his back out and couldn't finish the job.. he had already painted ceiling/woodwork and was ready to hang the paper.

We went in.. looked at it.. said it needed all re painting as he'd only one coated.. we also asked if he was lining the walls... don't know was the reply.
So we lined, re painted all of it.. then I hung the paper. Customer couldn't believe how much she's paid a roll (£50 after discount).. I said that's cheap compared to some stuff

This thread is getting silly. Considering that it originated 3 or 4 years ago, it was resurrected by someone who just wanted to blow their own trumpet.
I really don't see why he had to search for such a thread and then proceed to tell us how good he is. Your name isn't Pete is it?

We got a 'professional' in a while back as we didn't want to do the room ourselevs and he only did an ok job on 3 walls and made a complete absolute horrendous hash of the feature wall, so it had to be ripped off and re done

He never removed any sockets and just papered up to to them, he put some of the paper on upside down (3 colour vertical stripes), overlapped it, cut it vertically, didn't go down to the floor, and it was full of bubbles and creases, it was over 20 quid a roll too so not cheap sh*t

Seriously though, first three years was the City & Guilds qualification
year 4 was the C&G Advance craft
then I had an extra year where I carried on doing the decorative treatments course.. (Marbling/Graining/ Broken Colour work etc). also did teacher training along side that (NVQ assossor as well - 'D' numbers to those who understand that). Had three years teaching P&D.... got totally disillusioned with the bums on seats attitude to fill the college courses and the political politics of colleges, saying that it was good experience and I enjoyed it whilst there. Plus I have the bits of paper too to hang on may hallway walls.. next to my wife's 'Masters' certificate. Not quite the same.. but makes me feel better

To be honest, I reckon those who say 'If you can p!ss you can paint' may actually be right

If the floors of every Gents in every Pub, Restaurant, Motorway Services, etc, are anything to go by, the overwhelming majority of blokes (in this country at least), couldn't p!ss straight if their lives depended on it


I learned to decorate by getting under my Grandad's feet (self-employed and never out of work for nearly sixty years) after school and every summer for years. He must have figured if he couldn't get rid of me, he may as well put me to work

I learned enough to know that doing it properly is bloody hard work, and that I could never do it for a living, I'm too slow. But I do still get a real feeling of satisfaction doing our home

In a funny way it helps me remember him too, he passed away 23 months ago and he was my hero

 

When I paint a wall it's garenteed to end up on the celing.... So the wife does it.

My mate is a P&D and has done some big names in London. I have no idea what he earns but said he would do mates rates at £65 a day..is that good?

 

thats about right for mates rates plus get the materials for them at trade price.
the c&g courses have changed loads in last 5-6 years and i did graining,gilding,marbling etc on the level 2 course including hanging some damn expensive papers.level 3 is part paperwork side for running own business and lots of national trust and english heritage work concentrating on decorative effects.looking forward to it
i know of people working in london that are on silly money but they have to pay for others to work for them out of that money.if you price too low people think your crap and too high doesnt get any work in so its hard to price yourself.

 

Of course it is. That's a lad's pay for labouring, not a tradesman's. However, like all things, it's what people are willing to pay.

Never knew that so much went into it, unless specialist stuff, but then I have seen some work in listed buildings etc and it hasn't been very good either

The daft thing is with ours is the guy we had to do our work (although it was adam waldron who did the actual work) was a good guy and pretty decent, it was him who sent Adam

Adam came highly rated too (we didn't know he was Kerry's ex until we saw him on TV LOL)

The feature wall still isn't finished because no-one likes the paper and we couldnt take it back because Adam kept all the receipts, so we lost all our money plus 400 quid install costs too

I won't put the paper up because as soon as you open it it starts creasing so we are going to have to get different paper and do it ourselves

 

On the pay side of things I guess it is like most of this country now, everyone is battling everyone down on price or offering stupid rates just to keep work coming in. Its happening in my line of work too

 

there's a difference between running a business and running a charity.
and we can all work from nothing!!

it's not always the case of what you get what you pay for, but in some situations if it seems cheap they'll be a reason for it.
