Disappointing to see some on this thread apparently with no soul or trust in human nature with respect to people in such financial trouble.

I really wish I could have that much faith in human nature, but unfortunately there is an element of society who will try and play on people sympathies for their own financial gain ( ooh, lets pretend our daughter has been kidnapped and then go for the big public sympathy vote because the McCanns got over £1M in donations ).

Particularly when things that should be private affairs are splashed all over the tabloids, my first instinct is to think there is more to the story than is being reported.

Had the kids just quietly sold the items on Ebay without involving the media or broadcasting their sob story, then I would be much more inclined to believe they were completely genuine.

There are plenty of people who find themselves with financial and other difficulties, but their first thought isnt to go the papers and see how much extra they can get by making people feel sorry for them.

Whether you think it to be naive or not, I still prefer to believe in people,especially those in the situation of those children, until they are proved to have been fiddling the situation.

Leslie - These people have a chance to help themselves, but they don't bother. As you posted in the children in need thread you know that I am not completely heartless, but I would tend to help people who can't help themselves, and forget about those who just can't be bothered. I'm still with Mike on this. It is a sad story being manipulated to make money

 

i had the same thought. no experience of the co-op in this situation, but i used to handle a lot of consultancy work for two different societies (new store construction, review of property portfolios to extract "best value" etc) and my experience is that they will usually put local causes and indivisuals ahead of pure profit margins.

their roots (the rochdale pioneers and the principles of socialism) usually mean that they trade with a conscience rather by simple reference to cashflow.

Well I am not in a position to know the full unvarnished facts. I was looking at it in respect of those children losing their only parent and that the CO-OP was not prepared to give them a bit of help.

I'm pretty puzzled by all of this, to be honest I would have sent a donation to help, but the story is full of conflict.
One site says send cheques to their aunt via someone elses address, one says the kids raised £250 off ebay, another says they got £300 off ebay, then another site says the kids are using £500 of their own savings...

The 17 year old called Troy is stated to have been the mothers carer and may have been receiving carers allowance.

It's terrible that they've lost their mother and are having problems organizing the funeral, but there must be a reason why she didn't make arrangements or the remainder of the family.

In the end they managed to get all the money and some extra which has been placed in trust for them.

 

iirc; they had £500 donated from their aunts (they are on benefits so funds are limited) they sold their 3 dogs for £300 and they sold other household items for £250.

I am guessing that if the lad got a payment for looking after his mum, it would have stopped when she passed away, maybe hes like me and spends the money he earns so didnt have anything to put in?

its all paid for now anyway so not much point worrying about it any longer.
