The LHC has not been built solely for the purpose of research into the Higgs field and particle. Even if it was, proof either way would be a success. It's just as important to prove theories are wrong, as that enables you to move on to the next theory, and the next, and the next. It's called scientific progress. It was built to further research into a wide range of things.

Anyway, isn't it just an absolutely amazing engineering project, as well as the scientific aspect. I mean, how coolis it being able to build a device capable of smashing stuff together at mind boggling speed.

I didn't make myself clear. I meant for Prof. Higgs, not LHC. As you say, this experiment is to prove either way and move on. Spending 40 years on a theory for it to be disproven would be a bit of a sore one! Apparently, many of his lectures at the University of Edinburgh were based on the theory that they do exist.

I think Bosons do exist and hope they are found; I believe everything in this universe is infinite.

 

I think Bosons don't exist (a bit convenient for my liking) and the universe is merely so big as to be as good as infinite from our perspective.

As cool as this experiment is to find out the origins of the universe, I'd rather we spent time trying to recreate the moments before the big bang. Now that would be worth knowing!

 

So if the universe isn't infinite, what's it contained in or constrained by, and what's outside that, and why isn't that part of the Universe

Its been ongoing for getting on for 20 years in the making and now the media blunder in and promote random $hite hysteria. Prompting the retards to comment...

There have been numerous technical hitches and delays encountered within the LHC and the detectors. ALL of them, large and small, have been overcome and the magnet failure will be a distant memory come next summer me thinks.

If they do catch a fleeting glimpse of a Higg's Boson, what wiill they actually be able to do with it since it is not going to hang around for very long I imagine?

Its cutting edge Particle Research, on a new facility, were people expecting a headline in October saying "Higgs Particle found, lets go home", if they were they are a bit simple, saying its a "Fail", no its not, its a setback that in the scheme of things will take no time at all to sort out.

Ok, 4 billion is a lot of money, but its been over a long time and funded by a lot of countries and it pales into insignificance compared to the money spunked on Oil Futures, Defence, Mobile Phones, Sky Tv and Scratchcards every year, we can either continue as we have been, making leaps or we can go, hmm MP3 players are the pinacle, now we can regress back into cave dwelling Burberry Clad knuckle draggers.

I Dont know why people feel the need to knock it, the thick are scared of it due to the media but I dont see the problem, its not doing us any harm, I dont suspect my contribution is a big as the ones taken to pay for Somalian Asylum Seekers, Bogus benefit claims, wars I dont support and the plethora of Wheelie bins outside my house.

 

You say you work there but then fail to the ninth degree to explain why LHC will not run over into winter months.

The actual reason is because there is not enough energy produced in the region to supply Geneva (in winter months) and the LHC at the same time. Cost was never a factor, a planning rejection in 1999 was.
