Cool

I have a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD jobby, and it's superb. I have also seen Plasmas running, and they are superb too. All the people who talk of night and day differences between LCD and Plasma are talking out of their.......

Go to somewhere and ask for a demo of each and make your mind up, simple as. Something will appeal to you, and that will decide it for you.

Either one, you won't be disappointed.

So did I. Said thanks, went home, and ordered it over the interweb for £400 cheaper Of the sets I looked at, plasma was easily the winner (especially where fast moving stuff was concerned - often a factor in video games).

Panasonic just made a new range of plasmas, and them are easily in your price range or look at the Pioneer plasmas.A few of the Panasonics are THX certified, so should get perfect qulity films on screen. As for surround sound i would prefer with THX so it matches the tele.Jamo make THX surround systems, don't know how good it is though.

Jamo are not a bad marque

Middle of the road... way better than a "one box solution" mind you.

Remember, THX isn't a format, just a set of technical specification parameters for equipment and discs to attain. Given the choice of a Dolby Digital THX certified disc or a DTS disc, gimme DTS every time : along with any AV amp that can deliver DTS. The optimisers on THX discs are handy for setting brightness and contrast though

I was looking only last week. I would like to replace my Sony 36" CRT. I was waiting for the new 40" X range from Sony, but went to the shop to have a look around (highend electrical retailers) and was so disappointed with the whole sony range (didnt have the X in yet)
LCD on a whole was poor and there was no way I would swap my Sony CRT for one, but did fall in love with the Pioneer Plasma ... It was magnificent, I didnt even know they made T.V's
The colour was so natural, it was lovely.

So when I do decided to change the TV within the next 6 or 8 months it will be a pioneer im sure

I just pre ordered the 42 inch PZ800 and wanted to know if anyone owns one to give me an opinion.Usually speakers are generally decent.I looked at other reviews and people have said it's a very good tele, but that is all i have got to go on.Also i thought about buying a decent surround system and because i won't be using it all the time, i am hoping the tv speakers are decent. The surround system i looked at is the Onkyo TX-SR875 so has anyone got opinions on that too.Sorry for jumping on the thread.

HI M8

If you can afford it then Deffo go for thte Pioneer plasma, we have had our's for nearly 4 year's not one bit of bother, i got a Ps3 for the blue ray Hd disk's, waste of money as i cant see any diffrence over standard DVD's and i put that all down to the TV.

PDP42Xde was the model we bought, and it wasnt cheap, but the quality is so sharp, it came with it's own media box, which is actually quite good, it means there are only 3 cable running up the inside of the wall to it and the mass of cable's now go to the media box.

A wee pic of it fitted, changed the hifi and unit now but still give's you the idea

Lots of ill-informed advice here, if you're serious about getting a new tv you would be better off heading over to AVForums and asking on there.

For comparison, here's a thread I posted on AV Forums showing the difference between my Sony CRT with a DVD via RGB, Panasonic PDP and a DVD via component, and Panasonic PDP with DVD via (upscaled) HDMI.....CLICKY. I intend to go HD next year with Bluray and will add the same images then for further comparison.

Plasma all the way,

Got a 42" panny viera, the picture is superb, SD is as good as normal tv,

contrast to my mates brand new 50" LCD samsung,

SD is pants, the most pixellated picture ive seen for a long time.

for your info, LCD,s cant do real black, only grey, due to them being backlit all the time

The next generation of LCD's will have LED backlighting, whereby each pixel will have it's own LED illumination which can be independently switched, meaning it can be switched off for true blacks, and maybe dimmed for an even wider colour gamut. It's a shame SED has fallen by the wayside leaving OLED as the next new format. OLED is having trouble as the first commercially available panels from Sony are showing signs of colour shift as the red, green and blue organic compounds are said to age at different rates. Laser TV has gone a bit quiet recently too. For now, I'll stick with plasma.
