When I had my standard 03 WRX, I got handed my **** on a plate with trimmings by an E46 M3. Mind you, it was 60mph rolling start. I thought I'd pulled my handbrake up the way it disappeared. Sounded nice too...

I completely destroyed a standard E36 M3evo down the 1/4 in my old V5 TypeR running 316bhp. They have got progressively quicker since then the e36 though.

Just out of curiousity, do you have the link to the thread on the BMW site?

as for the e92 that is a much quicker car then then e46...but similar to the RS4....bloke had just got 1 near to me and took me for a quick blast init....definately has more luxurys then my car...but in quickness stakes i still think i would have the edge...they do sound awesome however!!
once raced an rs4 on a dual carriageway at half 2 in the morning and he could'nt keep up,so i think the e92 would struggle aswell

Standard STI will do low to sub 13's all day long with a decent driver.
(Classic Version)

M engines are awesome, and the E46 is awesome all-round with grip and balance, however straight out acceleration and it is quite dissapointing.

I got a 13.79 at santapod in my uk turbo 2000 that has only had the exhaust from the turbo back changed and no remap lol. I'm racing against my mate's M3 up there next weekend so I'll let you know how I get on!

With a good driver the M will give you a run for yoru money, however an E46 M3 getting mid 13's is a rare occasion with a good drag driver.
Normally at the strip you will see them consistently getting 14's...

Currently in our M Coupe we have has the fastest 1/4 mile (AFAIK) in the country for an N/A M Coupe with 13.1, on that day none of the M3's were even close.

very very very true !!!!

i was looking for a M3 for a fun car and was very dissapointed with it APART from over a ton,,,,, where its just a PUKKA PUKKA car !!

but i went and test drove a Impreza,,,, just to compare as i was very upset with the M3 and,,,,, well i bought it straight away,, ok its a STI V3 holding 1.1 bar,,, but its DEFFO quicker off the mark,,,,, but when it gets to a 110mph the M3 is better !!!

Interesting, the entire thread on the BMW site goes on about build quality and looks, where as this one is pritty much all about performance. Guess that sums the two cars up really, are you in to looking flashy or going fast?

We all love scoobs because they are the best value drivers cars n the road and with a few tweeks they can be made to be phenomanal bits of kit but the M3 is a 45,000 pound thoroughbread !!!
hang on was the sti not faster round the top gear track with a driver getting the most it can give? i think a big factor is the drivers ability or ***** and on a avarage twisty uk road road id bet a months wage an m3 would not be able to be pushed as far

I'm probably the best person to answer this question i've just part-ex my 05 sti type UK for a 01 e46 m3.The Sti is quicker than the M3 thats fact but the with the sports on and with the dsc(traction control)off it becomes a little bit closer but still the Sti is still quicker.I miss my impreza (i had two the other was a my98 uk turbo)i miss the raw feel but i wouldn't go back to owning one.I would said one thing for a rear wheel drive car it can handle even in twisty stuff and can match any impreza if you got the bottle but only in the DRY i wouldn't try it in the wet.

To certain extent an idiot can drive an impreza quite quickly the e46 m3 require's a better driver to get the best out of it but when you get it right on a road you know i feel is more rewarding.

p.s i must add this is only in the wet

If you want chicks get a life
They are two different class cars really although they where the only 2 I was looking at (E36 Evo and clasic STI). I went for the STI as I don’t really need to do many motorway miles and £ per performance couldn't beat the Scooby and it gives me an even bigger reason why I cant visit the UK much I cant afford the fuel
