Juice... I have a Sony Alpha A200 and I'm using the kit lens that came with it which has been more than enough upto now.

Ricky.... after a lot of umming and ahhhing eventually bought the same. Apparently. Sony have (or are just about to) discontinue(d) that particular model so if you can find one, snap it up quick. The newer replacement is around £100 more.

Jim has a Nikon D300 which is around £1k (for just the body) and then a £400ish 'prime' lens.... hence the slightly cleaner images from him.... am I jealous? Noooo....

All in all mate... the real money should go on the lens after you've outgrown the kit stuff. I'm currently on the lookout for a decent prime lens myself now.

The only real thing to consider is that once you buy into a brand, you're best sticking to it. Canon and Nikon are the two big ones but Sony ain't far behind.

Yep standard UK silver.... I think it was the subtle blue street lights which made the car look awesome.... as well as a little monkey magic....

Slightly larger zoom and more MP. I don't routinely associate Sony with cameras though. Might just have to treat myself while I'm away

 

Don't be fooled by pixel count Jon it's far from the most important factor. The 18-55 kit lens with the D40 is really good for the money
I'd back the D40 any day against the A200 (and I've used both )

I know Nikon as a camera company having sold cameras many moons ago and also owning Zenit and Olympus 35mm SLRs in the past

 

I would say Nikon D60 over A200, but A200 over D40 seem very evenly matched. The few things that swung it towards the A200 for me was:

-A200 9 point (AF) focusing & D40 has only 3 IIRC
-Anti shake built into body not lens
-A200 was introduced in 2008 & D40 was around 2005/6
-For beginner the std kit lens with A200 is quite versatile being 18mm to 70mm

 

The D60 is quite a bit dearer and certainly outside my price range. Stretching to above £200 will cause a hug stir with her indoors, she is already miffed at my buying a camera as it is just another hobby to blow money on "as if you don't have enough hobbies", is the phrase I often hear

 

Only you can make the decision between DSLR and superzoom compact, but the size difference between the bigger compacts and the smaller slr's isn't that great. Ultimately, unless you spend a lot on a superzoom the slr will deliver better results. Even a top end compact is still compromised.....

To counter Ricky's argument,

Multi-point is handy for snap shots but I prefer to pick the point of focus myself.
-Anti shake built into body not lens
I don't use VR lenses.If your camera has good low light performance it's not that important.

Can't argue that but I would say that build and handling on Nikon's is amongst the best
-For beginner the std kit lens with A200 is quite versatile being 18mm to 70mm
Don't believe the hype when it comes to zoom. Unless it's a quality lens your better off using something shorter and moving closer

 

So many opinions.... so many things to consider

A few points and comments....

I actually owned a Fujifilm S5700 (which can be had for around £80ish) and although awesome and easy to use, the extra bulk over a compact meant it didn't satisfy either need as a go everywhere camera, or a full on 'proper' camera....

Don't get me wrong... If I was going from a compact, I would defo consider one of these 'bridge' cameras but in reality if you enjoy taking snaps then take that bigger step and get yourself a DSLR.

As a newbie to all this photography stuff, I frequently find the whole manual thing overwhelming and do consistently use the Sony's Auto feature. As time goes on and I (hopefully) get better, I guess Jim's argument would come into play....

Again, as a beginner Antishake has been a godsend for those more casual shots. If I have time to compose the shots on a proper stand then VR is switched off, but thats not always an option when at parties or occasions when you're going for those casual late shots. Also, as the VR system is built into the body on the Sony, the lenses 'should' be cheaper than the equivalent Nikon and Canon stuff...

No comment. Although I will say that I bought a second zoom lens (70-200mm) and used it exactly once.... to have a play immediately after buying it.
Get yourself a 'prime' lens once you've outgrown the kit stuff.....

At the end of the day... try and have a play with both. You're welcome to have a play with mine and see how it feels. Only you will know which camera 'feels right' for you. The best thing is, you'll never buy a bad camera.... :tops:

 

This is exactly what I bought from Amazon... although it was approximately £70 quid cheaper at the time.

 

Cheers Luther, my mum has the 5700 which is what got me thinking about the bridge cameras. Having had 35mm SLRs in the past I would love another SLR, and I can here the sigh from my misses already

I've noticed the price of lots of electronic stuff creeping back up as the dollar gets stronger. Amazon will deliver to me in Afghanistan and sell the stuff VAT free so that's the prime opportunity. Also, there's a few US, Canadian and Dutch duty free shops on Kandahar airfield, and all of them barter, so plenty of choice.

I'll see what I come back with, maybe treat myself to a nice birthday present as I'm away for it

i did consider getting a nikon but then I found a 2nd canon 400d for a good price but that sold BUT after playing with a friends Canon 450D i think i shall be investing in that, really easy to use and quality is great
so will be seeing you on "photography 102" (the nxt lesson) soon

 

When this gets a little older, it will drop in price. It is one of the best bridge cameras made to date.

It is highly contagious, porbably because it is so cheap to get into. I remember getting out of it years ago because of costs like the dark room setup, the problems with the chemicals and how difficult it became to get simple things like black and white film which I needed for part of my photography GCSE, I even gave up on that because it was so much hastle

 

It certainly is contagious, I seem to take my new DSLR & mini tripod everywhere I go now!!!
