Don't get me started on PCs. I'd rather use my B&W G3 running 8.1 than this heap of a Vista laptop...

Morning/Afternoon,
Ok, is there still a CD/DVD in the internal CD/DVD drive? if so take it out.

Power the machine off. Make sure the external dvd drive is not plugged in. Make sure internal hard drive and CD/DVD drive are attached to IDE and things are jumpered correctly.

Reset the PMU/Cuda, have a look [url=http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86760]here for info on how to do it and where the button is on the motherboard (usually near the PRAM Battery)

Wait 10 seconds, then power on the machine, and zap the PRAM twice (just keep command, option, P and R held down until you hear the restart chime three times - once for initial start, then two for the two zaps)

See if it then boots from the hard drive.

If the disks mount on the desktop then it's possible they are not bootable. Are they actual Apple disks, as in Apple logo and stuff on them, or are they copies? I could see if they are copies how they might not be bootable.

The icons you are seeing are say there is no System Folder on any attached device, in other words, it's found nothing it can boot from.

It's being a complete bastid then

Have you disconnected the external dvd drive and also the internal hard drive, so the only device attached is the internal cd drive? if not, give it a shot and pop in one of the CD's then try holding down the C key. Actually, try restarting the machine, not holding down the C key and just popping the CD in the drive and seeing if it boots. It might do so as there are no other drives on the system.

Only other key combo I can think of is command + option + shift + delete (backspace key), but I'm fairly sure that won't work on G3's
