I go quite frequently to Kiev and keep meaning to go on a "guided tour" of Chernobyl. Yes, they are offered by Tourist agencies in Kiev.
Will be going again in June and will make the effort to go and see the reactor area.
Will report on my return!

I always wondered what would happen (god forbid) if a similar event occured in modern day UK.
After the explosion in Chernobyl, people were ordered to go in and clean up. Later, voulenteers were asked for.
Those soldiers who stepped up to shovel contaminated graphite from the roof back into the hole were given something like a year off their compulsory military service for every 60 seconds they stayed up there.

What would the situation be like in todays H&S ridden, compensation culture?

 

I knew we would find a use for all those layabouts we have !

 

Whilst the kidofspeed site is shocking, wasn't it ousted as a "fake"?

Obviously you can't make up those types of photos, but the story about the bird was called into question at the time.

I actually use the site as a Tutorial lesson at College. It certainly shuts up any of the gobby little gits!!

It's a fake story. She did go there, but on a guided tour rather than by herself on a motorbike. So the photos are all legit, but the story she padded them with is made up somewhat.

Still good photos and a good site IMO, she didn't need to lie about the story and it would still have been very interesting.

meanwhile the newspapers have reported that F1 is to blame for the explosion and mclaren will be hauled into the dock.

within the following 3 weeks gordon brown will probably say something along the lines of "it was bin laden, we will sort it out soon"

at this point all the firemen have left the country, so the government decides that the polish community will be able to be trained up to tackle the raging fire.


btw its going to take the poles around 5 weeks to train up enough, to get valid driving licences so they can drive the fire truck to the fire

Following that 28 days later link. The Nat Geo article mentions the abundance of life in the area. Some older people have even gone back as they missed their home.

They were moved to nearby town and given compensation. They were outcasts and disliked as they had been given money and homes whereas the locals got nothing.

I really would like to go.

The tour guide that took some other 28 days later did not get very close,so i think it is enter at your own risk

If every fossil fuel powered power station was replaced with nuclear we'd use up all fissile material within 35 years apparently.

If all power sources were replaced with nuclear, that 70 year figure will be halved, maybe more. Although I don't find all the info on this site to be accurate, the 35 year figure is supported by other sources I have read.

PS. Australia has the largest source of Uranium.

 

my apologies, I read there was 70 years of currently known about and economically recoverable uranium. obv there's possibly a lot of it about not yet known about as it's currently not viable to recover it.

breeder reactors will be used long term that are much more efficient.

A good read. Not sure though, in low-grade ore at least, only 0.1% to 0.25% of it produces a viable fuel.

 

You are quoting years based on the use of natural uranium deposits, however the future will see a large proportion of nuclear fuel made from mixed oxides (MOX) fuel. These are uranium and plutonium oxides recovered from recycled 'spent' nuclear fuel. MOX is currently manufactured in France (MELOX), Belgium and in the UK at the Sellafield Mox Plant. There are advanced plans to build a MOX plant here in Japan and Russia also (maybe others too). MOX fuel is currently being used in reactors in Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and France. The future is nuclear

 

Yes that is right. I never suggested anything otherwise. But the MOX fuels still require the base ore and uranium to be refined and used in order to produce MOX.

 

I find the whole Chernobyl & Pripyat story fascinating.

 

Anyway, the oil and Uranium will see me out so thats ok.

Hopefully by then we will have started making better use of renewables like wind, solar and tidal power, is there is a definite finite amount of easily extractable non renewable energy.

Didn't know about the 'Kidd of Speed' site getting closed down, but I was completely fascinated with the words and photos when I first saw it. Seen a few of the threads on 28 Days Later too, and I was up until about 3am last night playing the Pripyat level on CoD4 last night and pretty much sh!tting myself inside out!

Also I read somewhere on a photography site that apparently when the accident happened, Pripyat was fully evacuated within three hours, how much truth is in that I don't know, but very impressive if its true!

 

I got it as well, seems pretty good, £9.50 off Fleabay !

 

STALKER Weather Overhauled, Stalker Downloads, Stalker Singleplayer

I installed this mod. Has the SHARPER mod and Float32. STALKER will really benefit from some good visual mods and a quick machine.

Enabling cars can be handy if you can't be bothered to walk everywhere - they are actually in the game to be used but when the game was shortened they locked them. I never did as it too away the feeling of desolation.

The game was originally called STALKER: Oblivion Lost. There is a mod that makes the game close to the original ideas. Near complete free roaming.

IMO, it could have been a very successful MMO.

I'd also recommend a decent walkthrough as you can get a lost at first. Make sure the walkthrough advises you to complete the IIRC "Meet the guide" mission because not doing this mission means you don't get the option to play the final level.

Its hard at first but really stick with it, the reward is worth it.

Sorry if this seems like a spoiler but you'll thank me. I'd go as far as to say its easily as good as Half Life 2 and its theme is more interesting.

 

How early on is that in the game Edd? I remember you telling us about this game a while ago. I've got it but never got into it but I have doen a few missions.
Going to try out that visual addon as well!
