Reliable fun for a grand
Agreed. I'm not going to buy anything...I just thought it might be interesting to see what people could come up with. If you were in this situation the fun element would have to go on the back burner as lots of motorway miles in a tiny, tin box would be tough. I must to say the prize for lateral thinking has to go to Borat52 for the Lexus suggestion. Petrol consumption would be heavy and the LPG conversion a little too expensive, but as a reliable, cheap supercruiser it is probably unbeatable. It's such a good idea I actually want to try it lol.
A: Around 9 seconds to 60 and 130mph top end, good handling with better steering feedback than my old Scoob.
B: 850 quid (with 53k on it full Ford SH and all MOTs)
C: Only just put new brake pads on for 15 quid - never missed a beat.

Better still the Primera.
quicker than my mundano (150bhp)
arguably sharper handling.
Nissan : NISSAN PRIMERA GT 2.0 SE 1 OWNER F/S/H MOT TAX ONO

Good suggestion especially the Mk5 XR3i or RS2000 same motor as the Mondeo (can get a 130bhp XR3i 1.8) goes well, handles well (much better than you'd expect.) Zetec motor that goes on for ages and can be fixed at Halfords and a good 35mpg no problem. Nice interior too with Recaros if you find one with the option.
5t.
5t.
Its a shame you quote so many miles.
I've just bought a 4.0 Jeep Cherokee and its great fun. Very cheap for parts and irrespective of what you hear they are very reliable.
It doesn't handle and when you put your foot down it will shift but its mostly torque over out and out speed.
The downside is 16mpg round town and about 25 on a run so not good for 15K.
I'd go with the primera idea.

Im with Dracoro on this one.
Forget the Rover, nice enough car but generally, once the HG has gone, chances are it will go again, I had the BRM and that had been done yet went again within months.
205 GTI, for 15k of motorway its too old, I have a 205 hanging around, a 1.1 and it feels like a terribly tinny and dangerous antique, too much nostalgia regarding the 205, they are good but not as a daily driver any more, no safety kit whatsoever.
I would go dull but worthy, just get the newest Mondeo you can get, decent handling so is reasonable fun, a 2.0 litre is quick-ish, they arent fashionable so you dont pay over the odds, it will have ABS and airbags and be a much nicer drive than the 205.
T5, isnt a bad idea either, as long as there is evidence of some servicing, very robust and good fun (in a straight line), but at a grand its a gamble, liek has been said, loads of stuff from Euro and GSF but if anything bigger goes its maindealer or trawling scrappies, Ebay. There are a lot of thrashed inner city villian type T5's about, be careful.

It has been interesting seeing what people come up with. I suppose it was to be expected, but no one has been prepared to give up performance. Economy, reliability and practicality are all expendable, but not performance. So let's raise the bar a little. You now have £2,500, but you must achieve all four criteria. A bit of lateral thinking is required, me thinks.
