Them was the days. When you could take back the glass lemonade bottles to the chippy or take in old newspapers and get a free bag of chips

Yep, but you had to let the 'stolen' empties warm up a bit before taking them back

Black & white telly that wasn't 24/7. £. s. d. ' & " Lbs, oz's and drams, Gill's, fl oz, pint's, quart's, gallon's. Going to the corner shop to buy a pint of vinegar, with your own bottle, and sneaking a swig on the way back. Policemen wearing capes, and belting you round the ear when you were "cheeky". Watching Neil Armstrong. Morris Minor's with semaphore indicators (the light up one's, I'm not THAT old)

If you need a translation, your a young whipper snapper

Going out to take the car for a 'run' (possibly the silver MK2 Cortina we had) with my dad on Sunday morning.
No traffic, the only shops open were the newsagent and even that shut at midday.

Ahhhh.....those were the days of 5pence a litre 2 and 4 star leaded fuel and no green lobbyists telling us about global warming

Grandad waking up in the early hours to hear a car engine running outside only to realise it was his car but was so pissed he couldn't remember driving it home.....and he was a copper.

Grandma calling black people 'Darkies'......

Those were the days.

You old boys don't get too complacent. You are very unlucky if nothing physical offs you before the age of 45y. However after that on a sliding scale, medically speaking all bets are off. Live for the day and enjoy your memories. If you wake up and you are still breathing, by definition it's a good day. IMO, Incidently I was born ibn 1961 and I know exactly what you are talking about.

Getting your first set of shop bought "bathers", mine were bright yellow Speedo's, you had to have them for school swimming lessons. Known to our antipodean convict cousins as budgie smugglers

Can anyone remember free scrumps from the chippy or is that just a Welsh thang?

Scrumps - bits of batter and broken fried chips and if you're lucky bits of fish (ie the crap that falls off the food as it fries and has to be cleared from the frier)

Used to love the greasy fried crusty pap.

Ah yes, Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Mick McManus and the like. The best part of Saturday afternoon.

Bags of batter bits from the chippy.

Scrumping. I spent many a day with my best friend Michael Powell ( may he rest in peace ) removing all traces of fruit from Apple, Pear and plum trees before handing bags full to the neighbours who later rewarded us with pie after pie bursting with the fruits of our labour.

My son will be getting THIS for a birthday very soon.

I was born in the 60's, well, 65 days before the 70's started and can only see bad in most of todays ideas of parenting, education and nurturing. A kid needs to hurt themselves, needs to experience disappointment, rejection and humiliation, needs to learn some harsh lessons but hopefully in not too harsh a way. They also need to embrace childhood and enjoy it for the brief time it lasts, and we must do all we can as parents to try and ensure they do and make it last as long as is sensible. I can't wait for the first bo11ocking I get for my lad being filthy, cut, bruised, late, missing, or in trouble with neighbours, police (not seriously though) or the school, and it to be at least partly my fault
