I've been reading all your posts regarding the HID conversions with interest.
My previous Scooby, JDM 03 STi had HID's as standard, the ballasts were fitted under the headlamp units themselves, (slim ballasts), and the headlamp units were identical to a non-HID blobeye unit, as far as I could tell. (Ive owned 3 UK blobeyes without HID's). The HID bulbs were Philips D2R's, and provided a perfectly balanced and equal spread of light on the road, as you would expect.
(If I buy a HID kit, I would expect the way the light is shon on the road to be as even and equally spread as factory fitted HID's)
I bought a BMW 330d and then got a HID kit from Ebay, supposedly a reputable dealer, but the bulbs would not detatch from the wiring, (making the kit difficult if not nearly impossible to fit), and I was told after fitting that kits where the bulb cannot be seperated from the wiring are cheap crap, and I should have bought a kit with seperate bulbs, (like Philips D2R's). Anyway, the bulbs did not fit perfectly in the OEM holders, which they should have done being a BMW 3 series specific kit. Also, the light they gave out was shadowy and patchy, and unevenly spread. My point is the whole ethos of getting an aftermarket HID kit fitted is that it can shine the light the same way as an OEM HID system would, without shadows/dark patches in the emitted light. It's really not about how 'bright' the HID kit is. (Of course it's going to be bright, but HOW WELL does it spread the light evenly on the road is what's important).
I now have sold the BMW and have bought an 05 WRX, and have just ordered some Raybrig bulbs for it, but I would be interested to know more about the HID kits on the group buy......do the bulbs seperate from the wiring? I know there are many HID kits on sale in the UK of extreme varying quality, and don't ever want to end up buying a Chinese kit that is not manufactured to exacting standards. (Many of the Chinese kits can be bought in China for $20. Yes, 20 dollars). How do you differentiate a high quality kit from a kit one should avoid?
Bob, I hope to be looking at buying one of your kits if I can get some more info on my concerns raised above!
Regards
Greg

Hi Greg,
When looking for a quality kit it is important that the supplier provides decent aftersales service should you ever need it. You can see all the feedback on the GB thread of our kits. Its not like ebay where someone leaves feedback as soon as they receive something or first fit it.
These kits come with a 18month warranty.
The kits themselves have bulbs which are easily changed and come with about 10-15cm of wiring, which then plugs into the rest of the kit. They will fit straight into your car without modifying the holders.
Fitted into projector headlamps they will give a perfect cutoff line, as you would get with OE HIDS. Fitted to non-projector headlamps they still do a very good job, as good as you will ever get without changing to projectors.
You won't be disappointed

By the way, here's the ACTUAL UK Department For Transport (DFT) write up on HID's for those who are interested, for the UK ruling rather than cut and paste from US websites.
Funny - I haven't noticed BMW's and Merc's with HID's having headlamp washers..... let's arrest them ALL NOW!!! - not that we have to worry - the police are all out arresting people for being un-PC or speeding in order to meet their targets....

That's because you haven't noticed not because they haven't got them. All OEM HID sold in EU will be fitted with auto levelling and headlight wash. The headlight wash sometimes recess into the bumpers, you see a plastic flush fitting cover about 2" square. Or as on the new shape minis, into a corner of the headlight itself, you see a chrome semi-circular section in the lights. But they'll be there in some form or other.

And the fact that there's a good many owners on here who still have pretty dark tints on thier fronts is beyond belief off all the things that leave you wide open its having dark front tints! The fact that technically the arn't insured, that the could be taken to the cleaners financially and wouldn't have a leg to stand on doesn't seem to bother some people... If they every had an unfortuante accident with a bike, ped, or motorcyle let alone a car they in effect would be fully liable and it would be almost impossible to get out of it... And that from a legal specialist who's sat oposite me...
Of all the things its unlicky to be a problem, and as I'm with about 6 traffic cops at the min in the back of the station, and just asking them, they agree. but I'm not saying where I am...

That may be there view but not hat of all police. I would be very disappointed with any police officer who did not at least give some one a verbal warning if they found some one braking the law. This is there job after all.

For what it's worth I would say for certain that I see F****ies driving every morning of this winter with no lights or side lights only which goes without saying how dangerous it is. I've never seen or heard of the police doing anyone for this!
These clowns need HID dashboard lights.
D.O.T report is simply ridiculous like so many other legislations in the f****ed up country we live in. Like the tinted window issue, never any publicity or advice from the D.O.T via an MOT station or simply a campaign in the press, but simply a means of the police to screw people over and fund the taxes of the local government!
Rant over! Thumbs up for HID's!!
