WRC.com - Live Monte Carlo Results - Let me know what you think
rich.. go to bed mate!!
thanks for the comments guys. Rich, I'll try to get you in touch with the designers as they really love comments, etc.
a few points though (and bare in mind I am speaking personally and not officially)...
- There is a non flash version. Go to www.wrc.com and click "non flash version" at the bottom while the splash screen loads. There is still a lot of imagery, but I think we need to leave the millions of dollars and absolute TOP designers, researchers and marketing people to find the happy medium as the site beds in.
- The news you mentioned was taken from wrc.com originally (as I understand it) and was on wrc.com first.
- The user interface will evolve as time goes on
- Scroll bar? There are two options, you can see the whole list or just a group at a time.
- Not sure what you meant about charging for the coverage? I think you may be confusing it with something else.
- re: Other sites refreshing their results every 60 seconds. The results on wrc.com are absolutely live as they are fed directly from rally hq. With all the other benefits that entails.
I'm completely impartial on this one, in the sense that I would not want to be involved if it wasn't the incredible advancement in the sport that this entire project is, but I just thought it was important to make sure it was clear what criticisms were valid.
Thanks guys for the feedback, (if you have trouble with the site being blocked, you can still get to it by going to www.worldrally-online.com I believe).
It's great that so many of you are enjoying it, as I have witnessed the superhuman levels of effort and commitment (not to mention the money) that has gone into this by people who (surprisingly in this modern age) REALLY want to bring us all the ultimate experience possible.
All the best
Simon

There's a link at the bottom of the wrc.com pages pointing at it:http://carbon.virtualspectator.com/wrvs (that's how I found it)

please... me go to bed...
You've been hanging around JF too long

when there is something really important to discuss *frown*
No way mate
The news issue .. I doubt it on the time splits and allowing for time zones
Oh bye the way I did check both sources before posting .. Whoops Sorry
Glad to hear the the Ui will evolve, because quite frankly it really needs to. because at the moment speaking as a professional IT SUCKS... Sorry but it does mate.. * exasperated look on *
the scroll bar thing.. whole list or group at a time.. Ummmm I rest my case ya Honour viz a viz UI design
Coz I spent time on the site and I didn't spot it.. But then, I'm just a dumb tester
Charging for coverage.. * cough* It'll come, trust me already spelt out in ISC docs
. Because after all they are hardly a charity.
I'm more than happy to spend some time talking with the dev team about this. My work number is +1 425 705 2692 and my email address is in my profile.
I know I know, i'm an awkward old git
But If the sport that I love is to compete with NASCAR, CART, INDY LITE,F11 and god forbid
the Goodwood Revival Meet
for the attention of the limited USA car watching TV market.
Then it needs to have all bases covered and they need to be perfect..
Because quite frankly they have one chance and that at the moment is geared around the WRX being the flavour of the month. Damn I even heard the word rally mentioned on a Import Auto Show on speedvision tonight..
Yeah the max Power crowd get equal opportunity with the WRC..
I know scarey innit

Sorry mate but just clicked the more filth link..
very sad..
real max power mate ..
So I suppose this is the continuation of the dumbing down of rallying as we used to know it..
i suppose that next year the gradual slide will continue from the rally of wales,
to the rally of the vale of neath, to the rally of Margam Park ..

Sarcasm is fine mate..

But at the end of the day ISC and WRC have to win over USA.. Well 280 million are not wrong
Come on guy face it... F1 is a REAL MINORITY sport here, let alone wrc..
And at the moment they have a very, very small market share and much of that is web based.. So they really need to get the web side of things right..

Is it a bit chilly in here, or is it just me ?
Rich, are you on the same site as we are, I really can't find the "more filth" link ?
Or is my NetNanny playing up again
I think in all honesty that making the process of the WRC in itself is beyond the scope of what Simon tried to get attention for in this thread. Yup, it's professionalizing, with all the pro's & cons that entails ... don't think you can stop it either.
Anyway, back to the site itself
I'm really really happy with it's existance.

Simon,
I've spent a bit more time playing now, and if I had to make one observation, it would be that the fact that the whole page reloads every time, does rather slow things down.
Would it not be easier just to update the times 'frame' as per rally-live?
Josh

Hi Josh
Thanks for that, I'll pass that on.
there are quite a few very good reasons for not using frames, but it may be worth checking if there is any extra time taken to load the surrounding images, etc. You may find that they are cached and don't actually slow the results being presented to the page. But that may not be the case.

Just got back
I would just like to say a big thanks to Simon for trusting me to get on the inside of what is a HUGE project for the WRC.
I think your being a bit harsh Richard, this is the first time a lot of this technology has been integrated and there was an awefull lot going on in the background that will be coming that wont be seen for a while.
The technology behind the whole setup was superb and the team actually working there bollox off to make this happen for the first time absolutely live were real stars. Most of the time i was a glorified coffee boy but some of the stuff i was talking about and helping with, especially with kieth on the comms side of things was very interesting for me.
Big thanks to Clare, Mark, Keith and of course yourself Simon. You are all barking mad but really dedicated to providing a class, up to the second product that will naturally evolve. You have the makings of something very special there. Of course some things will need changing but you really only find these things when dealing with live data for the first time and of course you react to user feedback, thats part of why this thread is here no doubt, to gather user input.
I have spoken to a lot of guys from the USA on this site and they all are completely nuts about how live the results were!
Finaly, one of the best moments of this trip was being able to sit and chat with Fred Gallagher, one of the true legends of WRC/Paris Dakar Co-Driving. He tells a good joke for sure.
Check my pictures post, i have hundreds to sort plus a novel to write.
Thanks again simon, a trip from start to finish absolutely full of unforgetable moments. I have a stinking cold now though. LOL
P.S i was sat next to the FIA scrutineer that impounded Loebs tyres on the flight back, no way is he keeping that win! Tommi won the Monte yet again!

Simon / John..
I'm sorry if I seemed a little harsh. It really wasn't meant that way at all. Overall the site is very good and does have great potential.
One thing that we do a lot here is to critique the products that we are working on very, very intensively. This is done at all major milestones of the product cycle. This can lead to some, how shall I phrase this
, very interesting meetings between design, development and test. The whole idea of this way of working is to improve both the product and the just as importantly the process of building the product.
Richard.
oh yeah PS
I was spending all night getting some test automation software to actually do what it is supposed to do.. Damn software hey.. Why do we do it
