yeah should be, wasn't sure if the idle had sorted itself, was just thinking about the higher revs would alter the reading but must not be that

the car has just ran out of tax & mot

the light goes off when you let go of the throttle.

even when you say rev to red line & letr go its fine.

i did, but it dont come up with any
this is why i could do with the car being plugged in, them when the reving problem happens. may find the foult

i've had another look, & this is how to see what my car is doing.

while on tick over, unplug the connection to the idel speed control valve.
you get the same rev proble i get + the light comes on.

replug it, every thing is normal.

i may change that valve anyways. just to ilimitnate it
on higher revs in dont seem to play up as much

So if i understand correctly, you're saying between 2-3000 rpm when trying to hold steady revs.... it fluctuates wildly?
It will do this on idle if you disconnect the idle control valve as you say. I would be looking in the area of thottle position sensor, possibly loose or maladjusted, if all ok, next on list would be the icv itself.

Actually, reading back through the thread, the first thing i would suggest is refit the tmic and check the timing belt is tight. If this has just started happening since you fit the fmic and cam pulleys, it would make better sense to retrace your steps systemattically.

the timing belt is new, as i also fitted a new uprated oil pump
& theres a new tentioner on there too

i've rechecked the hoses, there all fine. but this is the thing, when holding the revs. it takes a couple of seconds before it plays up.

today, i'm going to check the iscv. see if its sticking at all, ive placed an ad up for a replacement part. i'm also replacing again, the maf & throttle position senser

i even changed the mapped chips that was changed. so i know theres nothing wrong with the ecu

i still think its some thing simple, all the coils are fine & theres no plugs on there too

but the car was standing for a while

ok, know today i've changed the idel speed control valve.

know heres the thing know. it only seems to play up on the revs of 1 & a harf k

if you hold it at say 2 & a harf to 3k. its fine

could this problem be the throttle posion senser?

what happens if this senser goes?

are you sure it is not just the ecu trying to control the idle speed down by altering the idle valve openning?

Also, if the battery has been disconnected, ideally you should take it for a drive, you may be looking for a fault that is'nt actually there!

i did think about that. as it i did take it round the block, but when the revs plays up. the engine light come on till i let go of the revs

but hold aboth 2k say around 3 its fine, i'm going to take the car for its mot. then if it does it again, i'll take it to be checked by either subaru or say scooby clinic

but with the plugs changed & every other thing done. its quite smooth
picks up nice, with a screal from the turbo (hasen't been used for a while)

well i'll keep postard, i may still change the throttle position senser
just in case

its after a couple of second the engine come on.

but the best way to show how the revs act, is just while on tick over. disconnect the idel control valve.

its the same as when the revs go funny.
but i'll try & check the code later.

i've just checked the foult errors

its to me coming up with 22/ knock senser
but it flashes twice slow then fast four times them again twice slow them four times fast

i would have throught it would have come up with the knock senser on higher revs

any ideas to this?

unless its the bottom part thats playing up (letting air in there)

the top cap is unlikely to cause a problem.. remove the bottom and clean the little filter etc..

Reset the ecu before checking aswell, because if you have had the icv connector off it will give you that code.

when the head gasket went, i changed the piston to sti v4 forged type piston, & cleaned every thing. inc the heads, the idel valve was spotless.

when i changed the top part yestarday, i cleaned it again. wasent really that dirty

the spring is still in place, no rips ect or anything.
the seal seems ok, i used carb cleaner on the valve part to

the code may have come up as i took the connection off while on tick over.
when seting it back up. it advances & retards the revs fine. there sitting on 900 rpm's

i took the car for a spin, & it drives perfect. i've booked it in for its mot tomorrow

i'll drive it a little, see if it sorts out. if not, take it somewhere for a diagnostic
