The LAN/Wireless part just describes the LAN/Wireless Technology and doesnt name a manufacturer, probably due to the fact that they change them from time to time

But they are usually Intel, Broadcom or Atheros, its just trying to work out which one they have used

Actually just had a look at the specs, it looks like they only used the Intel 2200BG Card

Here is a direct link to the driver download (if you havent got it already)

ftp://ftp.nec-computers.com/pub/item...K2SDC_wlan.exe

If you run that exe file once downloaded, it looks like it extracts to a folder called c:\pnp

Then you run the setup file from the relevant c:\pnp folder

This is from the site

Simon

Thanks for getting back to me - there is a cover and under that cover is the RAM and what looks like another slot which is empty (I assumed that was for extra memory?).

Maybe thats where the network card would sit?

You should have either a green or blue LED when the Wireless card is enabled, apparently on the left hand side of the laptop

Not normally Pete, only the memory slots are underneath

The LAN card will more than likely be under the keyboard, just had a loook through the manual, the Wireless Card is not accessible from Underneth, only the battery and memory slots

Cheers, thats the file I download and put on the LapTop - when I run the set-up it tells me ""No matching driver has been found for your adaptor or no adaptor is installed"

I'm begining to think that the card is missing for some reason? Or maybe didn't have one?

That doesn't account for the yellow ? in device manager next to Ethernet Controller - does it?

for an engineer our Pete is a little slow on the uptake don't you think?

Like asking several times what msinfo32.exe is, Google answers you in 10 seconds.
Description of Windows XP System Information (Msinfo32.exe) Tool

I don't get you Pete, its like you want to string people along for as long as you can manage. You're perfectly capable of reading the manual that has been provided by people here and having a look. I just took apart a laptop into its individual components, its in about 15 bits. Took 30 mins to do after a 5 min read of the manual i downloaded through Google.

Luminous

I have used the msinfo.exe - no problem.

I have read the manual, although it was difficult as each page opened up in a Yahoo Browser window.

IT is not my area of expertise - I congtaulate you in taking a lapTop apart in 15 minutes, go to the top of the class. If you don't want to help or think I am stringing people along then, please, move onto another thread - there are plenty who are attempting to help without feeling the need to question why I am not quick on the uptake!

Right, try holding down Fn and pressing F2 and see if the light goes off, then if it does toggle it again till it comes back on, and try to install the drivers again

OK, it went off again on Fn F2 push.

Came back on with another push.

Ran the set-up on that downloaded file K2SDC again ... comes back with the usual "No matching driver has been found for your adaptor or no adaptor is installed, do you wish to proceed with this installation?"

I clicked YES ...... not sure what it did .... but still no WiFi

Thought we had it then

I think your onto a winner now Pete, if the wireless link light comes on, (with my suggestion of the function key ) it must mean the card is installed n hopefully working. The ethernet exclamation is def due to the incorrect driver either conflicting with something else, or the correct set is not installed. According to the specs you do have the Intel card I posted a pic of earlier though. Maybe just maybe there is a piece of software already installed for a usb dongle, that maybe conflicting. So check add/remove for any suspect drivers/apps that maybe already installed and remove, and then reinstall the intel wireless drivers.

The Intel Wireless LAN ID Utility says:-

Wireless LAN hardware not detected .........

Is this the end of the line?

I downloaded the drivers in any case ..... the Device manager still shows Ethernet Controller in an error state

Even with your superb help Sonic (and bioforger, of course) I have failed!

Does the LED on the side indicate that I have WiFi built in? But, for some reason nothing 'sees' it? Does that about sum it up?

I have formatted the HD so all remains of any USB Dongle Software will have disappeared.

Removing the drivers installed may work? And then re-install the Intel ones?

But that Untility says I have no Wireless LAN Hardware ...... could it be wrong? Grasping at straws now

It might not have had wireless to begin with, and may have been added later

The biggest problem is finding out which card it is, Intel do a few cards, so do other manufacturers too

Check this Pete

Unofficial eMachines Forums • View topic - m5310 WiFi Antenna removal / installation

Have a look under the left-most door on the bottom of the notebook

That is where the MiniPCI slot is, and if nothing is in there, it looks like there is no wireless card in there

Actually just noticed that is for an eMachines m5310 not an NEC one

How about if I uninstall the hardware, then let XP find it again on restart?

Might that help - I don't want to do it if it causes more problems than I have presently

You could uninstall the hardware and let XP find it again, and then when it asks for drivers, point it to the folder where you extracted the drivers too

Back to square 1 with this now

It was running perfectly this morning, everything working fine, wi-fi and all ok .... but, windows kept wanting to update but couldn't as the OS was on a 2Gb partition - windows kept warning me about no space.

So, I have loaded the XP Disc and tried to install it on D Drive - which is 30Gb .... now it seems to be stuck up its own rear end

I did look into a partition manager shareware .... it seems that it offers no guarantees and could take a long time - so, thought I would bite the bullet and start all over again.

Resumed this thread as it has lots of good info I needed first time round - hope you don't mind good people?

One thing I have forgotten - how did I get to format the HD last time? I cannot remember what I did ......

Installing on the D Drive hasn't worked - the C Drive XP works perfectly ... the D Drive XP does nothing ..... I may remove that now and have another think
