Cheers lads.

I am heading up to ScoobyMania/Area 52 Autosport tomorrow to drop the car off for the main engine build, turbo, FMIC, Headers, Clutch to be done. Hopefully that will make more of a difference than a few spangley bits.

Well today was the day to take the car up to Scoobymania/Area 52 Autosport and leave it in their capable hands.....

I was wondering what the difference will be when I get it back all night so hence didnt have a great nights sleep but headed up there late morning and dropped it off. Well, I say dropped it off, I did loiter for a while, chatting, eating saugage cobbs and looking over Mike's Noble who his friend had just blown a hole in the radiator (so didnt even get a test ride in it )

Chatted through various things to make sure all the parts were there or arriving in the next few days and what the schedule is for getting it back to me transformed. Rather than post a time-scale here, it will be finished when it is finished and hopefully in time to run it in and get a couple of test track days before the first event

Anyway, some bits were lying around with my name on so took a couple of pics..

We discussed the underbody aero work and will get cracking on that the next time I am up there to get it working as I want. That will be interesting

WTF is a sausage cobb, is that some bog dwelling fen speak?

Can't wait to see it finished, and interesting to see final power figure with the new set up.

As we have to have an FIA min 4 point approved harness for the drivers seat I needed to sort new harnesses out. The existing 4 point would be fine for the imaginary friend in the passenger seat, but as K-Sport were doing a deal on the FIA 6 point for Time Attack competitors, as part of their sponsorship deal with the series, I thought what the heck and bought a pair of them.

Ordered on wed late pm from Bren at Apex Performance (Apex Performance Parts welcome page) and they arrived this morning with citylink.

They look superb !! and will go in the car next week when I head up to Nottingham.

Laid out:

Close up on carbon buckle and FIA approval:

indeed - hoping they will do the job and can run them as 4 point too.

Got some spreader plates to go on when I drill the mounting holes for the 3 additional belt holes.

Got the new Corbeau Sprint seat from gary @ APT (thanks mate) and fitted it to the rail/side mount to make sure I had all the bolts etc.

While I was doing it I thought I would weigh it.

All in with the rails and side mounts it is 13.6kgs

I will weigh the old seat when I take it out.

Headed up to Area 52 Autosport today to do some jobs on the car while it was up there and to check on progress.

Plan for the day was:

1 to fit bucket seat - had rails to fit it on so should be a quick job.

2 fit 6 point harness to drivers seat

3 check underfloor to see what could be done to improve aero

4 measure up for the brake ducts

5 drool over some of the goodies going on 8)

I arrived shortly after 10 am and headed into the workshop to see my car up in the air on the lift minus an engine

Had a quick nosey around underneath (what is it that makes the underneath so appealling ? ) and looked at what could be done to improve the aero flow. With the 06 model a lot of the udnerfloor flattening has been done already so maybe not a huge importance to do stuff there so might wait til all the others 'to-do' items are sorted

At this point Jase pointed out the newly built engine that will be going into the car. For some reason I didnt take pics of this... I guess I was excited

I was then shown the Front Mount that had arrived ... the APS DR725 Stealth. It is a beast !!! Huge, deep and very functional piece of kit. I was very impressed with the quality of the item, the instructions to fit, templates to cut from the bumper and all the fittings. What a kit 8)

We then wheeled it outside so that I could quickly get the old seat out and fit the new one.

What should have been an easy job - was a nightmare and in the end, could not be done because the seat rail and mount only allow for a 400mm wide seat base between them and my seat was 440mm. Bugger.

A bit of fiddling around later to adapt the mounts and it was almost there but again could not do it because the base of the seat was now fouling the adapted mounts. Bugger again.

So I got on with drilling holes in the floor to mount the two crutch straps for the 6 point harness and using the spreader plates that Alyn @ ASP Performance supplied, fitting the eye bolts was a doddle. Cheers Alyn. The rear belt mounts were a simple replacing of bolts with eye-bolts and clip in the new harness. Easy.

Anyway back to the seat..... Well not actually - I gave up and will fight it another day when a full plan can be formulated

Some pics of an empty engine bay :

Duncan, we had exactly the same issues trying to fit Mike's seat, (Slim people fit in a 400mm seat )

We are resolving this by having extended brackets made up for the mounting rail, i.e. moving the rail nearest the door out by 45-50mm.

What sort of runner are you using, if same as Mike's I can probably have two sets made.

Hi Duncan

Your car is looking anf hope the engine will run sweet.
I've noticed that the top hat liner has replace all the material from the top of the alloy bore..is that ok to do that as mine's has cracked(see 22B)?

Good luck with the build and keep this brilliant thread going to the end.

I had a good look around the new short engine yesterday comparing it to my old STi std block and it certainly looks a fair amount sturdier and superbly machined. The pistons look the dogs danglies in there too

I did see your block pictures and it is a shame when that happens - have you got a final diagnosis on the cause?

-----------------------------------------

Update on the rail - I have spoken to the Time Attack scrutineer and formulated a plan to mount them that is acceptable to him. The work will involve adapting the bride rail by cutting the weld on the rear right mount mounting leg and re-welding it so that it drop down to the floor parallel to the main runner. This give an additional 30mm width at the rear. The front mount will have an additional block of 4mm steel welded to it to bring the front rail 30mm outboard too.

Job should be a good one and done today

Following on from the seat mount saga, I measured up the mounts and set out a plan for adapting them to fit, having checked this with the TA Scrutineer first.

The right hand rail needed to move outboard by 30mm to allow space for the seat to fit in there so some changes were needed:

Thanks so much to Jason (sidewaysfletch) on bigpower for doing this for me.

Small cardboad template made for the front mount hole:

Grinding:

More Grinding:

Even more grinding:

And then some welding and the finished result is awesome 8)

Showing the new front mounting hole 30 mm to the right of the original hole

The rear mount moved from the angle to directly below the rail:

It looks like it will fit but wont find out til next week.....

The project is coming along but still loads to do:

Being done for me in the next week:

1. re-install engine
2. fit FMIC
3. fit clutch
4. fit turbo

I am hoping that by the end of next week I can go pick it up and start a long drive back from Nottingham to get most of the running in done in one go

Then onto the job of mapping it.. this will be fun

Asides from this:

1. fit front splitter and undertray
2. make rear diffuser more effective
3. fit canards
4. get some tyres
5. change brake fluid
6. fit brake ducts
7. fit roll cage
8. fit second harness
9. oil change
10. fuel swirl pot and additional fuel pump
11. fit oil cooler
12. relocate suspension pickup points to enable the car to be dropped down another inch
13. suspension geometry
14. new graphics package to promote sponsors
15. and of course fit the seat

Still quite a bit .... and time is ticking.

Shake down will be at Snetterton on the 27th March. I thought a very familiar circuit would be good for this as I will be able to tell the changes made have actually improved things.

grease the whiteline camber bolts up GOOD when you get the chance, one of mine siezed up last week and the head snapped off when the alignment place tried to adjust it

it took around 4 hours in total to sort the wheel alignment afterwards

mine had only been in for 2 years max

The lists weren't in any particular order but thanks

There are a few non-essentials on the bottom list that may get dropped if time is tight too, plus I am sure some others that I have forgotten at the moment.

I'm surprised you have mounted the race seat on adjustable stocck sliders (I think you have here?)
This keeps the race seat at the same height as the stock seat. Mounting onto a custom non adjustable (by normal means) rails drops you 50mm into the depths of the car.

I did the same as you only to find this out.

The rails are low position ones Graham so sits about 2 inches lower than the stock rails to give some headroom on the cage

Looks like things are starting to come together. Should be a very impressive set up when it`s running.
Will you still be using it on the road???
Or will it become a purely track car???

they are the same holes in the floor but different rails that sit lower in the car as the seat sits between them.
