All IC hose clamps replaced with heavy duty one and also relocated the CAI kit which was pushing the wheel arch liner out and causing it to rub on the tyre on left handers.

Also been cleaning more of the oil off from the engine bay - jeesh that stuff gets everywhere

Went over to Zen yesterday to get Paul to check out why the car was running lean on idle at 17:1 with fuel trims all over the place. The car was running lumpy and not great fun to drive. (AFR was mostly fine whilst on the move)

After checking all IC/induction hoses for leaks, splits and anything out of the ordinary and checking dump valve, it was decided that the MAF sensor is probably the cause. This may have been dirty at the time of the last mapping or deteroriating. Paul cleaned the MAF and by amending the map managed to get it idling right and a lot smoother in closed loop which made for a much more pleasant drive home that is for sure It seems a lot smoother coming on and off boost than it has for a while so this issue may have existed for some time.

I am back there next thursday for a full mapping session and we can then swap the maf to see if this entirely fixes the issue and get the full potential out of the car ready for Knockhill.

While I was there, I had a lot of time to study the Zen TA car 8)

Duncan,
I personally think the Hawkeye front end looks the best out of all the Newage cars..... your car looks the dogs imo! I did think of getting a Hawkeye Spec C a few weeks back and swapping my engine over...... that was in a moment of sillyness again.

frayz - keep up mate

The borrowed ecu is still in my car and that is ecuteked and therefore unable to be accessed by me in OS mapping software. When my ecu is back from the states I will re-commence mapping myself until such time as a proper ecu becomes available for my car (and budgets allow). Paul is a great mapper and will set the benchmark for it for when I take over

Thanks Shaun - I love my car (most of the time) and am very pleased with the progress. These relatively minor niggles are taking some of the fun away from it for me at the moment but to make steps forward you sometimes have to stumble. I am sure that once these are ironed out, the potential of the work done by Area 52 Autosport to create the beast that it is now will shine through and smiles will return. The potential is there and I guess the minor frustrations are the inability to exploit them at the moment.

The hawkeye is the best looking of the bunch IMO too, but I would have to say that I love the new hatch version and particularly the crawford version that they have been running in TA USA - that is beautiful

2 weeks til KH and fingers crossed it will all be ok

I had mutiple frustrations in 2007, and they were all little niggles. The car itself as a whole has never let me down mechanically, but the amount of time that is spent on sorting out the "little" things, easily causes frustration.

The car never ran anywhere near it's potential in 2007 and it was not until Jan 2008 that the car was totally fit for purpose. Unfortunately the event calender of 2007 had passed.

Having the funds to do everything you can to make a complete package that "should work" reliably is one thing (and has probably saved me mechanical or major issues)...... but the little things that may not cost much, apart from head scratching and time is what drives the pain.

As I said.... good luck, but be prepared for when the real pain kicks in!

Whilst the rewards of a "dream build" is one thing, I can't help but think that the previous 380/360 set-up was so much better to live with and without doubt gave me the most enjoyment. With only having to worry about checking your fuel level comes some major advantages in the stress department!

Hey Duncan,

Glad to see that there were no major issues with the engine after your oil issues at Donny ... I was worried for you mate!

Which uprated clamps are you using on the intercooler pipework?

Cheers mate - I am now using Murray Corp constant tension clamps as used by WRC teams.





You can get these extremely tight and they grip the pipes perfectly without damaging them.

Well, what a day mapping over at Zen Performance !!!

Having left there last week having cured why it was running lean at idle due to a dirty MAF sensor, the idea today was to finish the mapping and get it running sweetly in order to show the potential in the engine, turbo and other ancillaries ...... and I think we did it

Previously I had got it mapped to 1.6 bar with occasional peaks above that. Today I wanted a full 2 bar of boost heaven as the engine and turbo will all take it.

It started well enough but when boost was wound up during rescaling the MAF table for the now clean and fully functional MAF it started to develop a misfire, this same misfire had been there in various guises for a while but never cured itself not allowed outside intervention on the mapping to cure it. Plugs were changed for some NGK racing 8's as inspection showed the plugs gaps were well out and not surprisingly misfiring.

After the plug change, it was a different animal - what a beast 8) Paul wound it up to 1.8 bar and it sang so sweetly that we just had to go further 2 Bar was an easy step and the whole nature of the car changed from reasonably placid and sometimes temperamental road car that also goes on track, to a devil in disguise. The sounds changed, the thrust back into the seat (even 2 up) was stunning and it just kept going so strong that I was giggling like a 5 year old.

I think I can safely say it will be quite adequate

Got home not long ago shaking with excitement msl: Knockhill will be perfect 8)

Spoke to Mike at Area 52 Autosport last night and he was very pleased with how it went with the mapping. After all the hassles of the laptop going, then the ecu frying it was very pleasing to see the potential of the package that Area 52 had put together being brought out into the wide world

The FP Green turbo is starting to show why I chose it to provide the extra punch I needed with 1.5 bar of boost available from around 3000 rpm

The last month has been stressful but now it is back on track and looking good for a sub 1 min lap at KH. It does make me think about what it would have been like at Donington with this performance......

I will try and get some dyno figures in the next week as a guide.

Thanks Steven ... no wonder I couldn't find any local SJS suppliers

Gave it a run out yesterday at a sprint at Honington airfield in Suffolk. It was primarily a day to train timekeepers but a 1.8km course was laid out on the airfield around cones and it was superb fun in the sunshine with some great cars there including 2 GT3 RS. One of these had the nicest carbon wheels you have ever seen at £2.5k a wheel

Idea for the day was just to test out recent changes and see if it will run reliably at full boost in hot conditions.

Ambient temps were at over 30 deg C sitting in the queue to set off and charge temp gauge was showing 42 deg whilst sitting on the line so not ideal for caning it.

Didnt quite get the launches right and kept bogging down at the start (i really need to practie these before doing any drag runs) but got away cleanly and into the course. A few fast right handers to start with and then a long anti clockwise oval through the finish. Speed were kept pretty low due to it being a training day but still hit the top end of 4th gear so around 100 mph on the grit strewn surface 8)

Managed to bag the fastest time of the day I believe and ran quite confortable without det even at the high boost setting - topping out at 2.1 bar of boost

No problems at all with the car and headed home at lunchtime quite pleased with myself ad the car. It is starting to come together now

Mate that looks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better on black rims.

Car looks harder than a coffin nail now mate.

What where the ACTs doing once you were moving?

They never went above 40C once moving as I never saw a warning light for it but I have to be honest and say that i dont look too much any more since the APS DR 725 went on as it is always as good as you can get it.

Even on a full WOT run up through all the gears 1-6 the ACT never rises more than 5C - the APS FMIC is a stunning piece of kit for keeping charge cold. You will love yours and enables you to map it much tighter.

Mine is mounted on a piece of carbon where the stereo was.

The KS3 is spot on with monitoring det. On my 2.5 the frequency is set to 6000 and gain set to 5. This seems to give the most reliable levels that co-incide with the ecu and normal det cans.
