If you have the space to store a 205l drum, then get that, as it is far cheaper than the 25l drums. You just need to buy a pump to transfer it from the main tank.

Hi Andy. Do you have any kind of 'recipe' that you know works for a methanol/toluene mix and that you'd like to share - ie the proportions of V-power/methanol/toluene? And what kind of octane would such a mix produce? In theory, could you also use add a toluene/xylene mix (pretty much the constituents of paint thinners) + methanol to get the same effect?

Thanks in anticipation, Andrew

Certain 'cellulose' paint thinners consists of Toluene, Xylene and Methanol..... perfect octane booster !

I have used 25%M and 25%T, remainder V power on a few customer cars, one of them was the first (only?) new age WRX to get into the 11's on a std internals 2.0
The other was an Sti4, also on std internals that ran 11.5. These cars were running 20G turbos so there is no doubt that the mix performs well.

To put it in perspective, I used a 20/20% addition before changing to 109 octane race fuel at £4 per litre. I noticed no improvement in ignition timing or boost tolerance and consequently no improvement in times.

As Steven mentioned above, a 205 ltr drum works out at around 50p per litre, I couldn't afford to go back to just V power alone

Stupid question, but would it be possible to have the car mapped with this mix and use normal fuel on a lower boost setting? E.g. map it on fuel+meth for outright power and max boost, and then use the dual boost map feature of the EcuTek to have the engine run safely on just petrol + normal octane booster (If you were out and about and were caught short?)

Need more power after the clutch

hmmm....... on some cars but not all of them, many of the newage Sti's running original (unported) VF34, 35 and 43 turbos will boost creep in cold weather at higher rpm, this happens regardless of Ecutek or boost controller settings and hence will require the octane it was mapped for.

The SimTek having 2 complete maps will allow for this , map the low boost setting for VPower only and the high for your choice of mix...
It can also have as an optional extra full closed loop wide band control and different AFR targets for both maps....

you can run a small % of meth (say 5%) as an octane booster without too much ill-effects from what I have seen. Better to get it mapped for it though.

the wastegate can't flow enough exhaust gas away from the turbine and the boost creeps higher than it should.

Are you sure ? Can you run wastegate boost pressure as a flat line from 2500-6500 rpm ?

Don't think I'm getting through here

Regardless of ECU type you can still suffer from boost creep, granted this may not be obvious when mapping on the rollers as you normally have more of an issue achieving boost, not holding it down.

No - the turbo wont flow enough for that Andy it starts holding its hands up and cries enough and boost reduces. (or is this creeping down )

when running 0.7bar actuator pressure? I think not

Probably, try setting it to a low boost target such as 0.7 bar and record what happens in a higher gear.

Andy, does boost creep happen on your 20G as well? I've got one of them on the WRX at the moment

Your 20G has a fully ported exhaust inlet and wastegate to minimise boost creep Henrik.

lol, its not an issue for most people as they intend to run high boost all the time anyway The potential issue arises when they want a low boost map specifically for lower octane fuel.

Sorry Andy , just a misunderstanding on your part
I was reffering to the original question of 2 maps for different fuels not the ability to stop boost creep with the SimTek...

I have used Methanol as an additive for 5 years now and as a 100% source of fuel for most of last year. No ill effects on injectors/regs/pumps/fuel lines etc.

As for the human issues.....well.... some would say I must be mad to drive this thing anyway so no further damage there either
so you are using only methanol on your fuel tank? you dont use any gasoline?
