Hi Harvey

I'm quite happy to loan my headers for testing but I'm planning to fit them mid-late next month so I dont want to be without them for too long. Where would you plan to do this? RR used?

Also, your ported headers will have been mapped in will they not? And with you being you (meant to be taken in a complementive way ), there will have been some considerable time spent perfecting the map. So to have a fair comparison, the tubular headers will also need to be mapped in with similar time spent perfecting the map.

I'm not doubting that your ported headers could be superior to tubular headers, I was just trying to get the point across that Kakumei headers have come along way and they aren't as bad as some people quote them to be.

But if you think a fair comparison can be had and you can do it before I need my headers back, pm me to sort something out or reply on here if you like

Harvey headers are great for a mildly tuned car. I have a set in my garage which i used for a fair amount of time. They certainly improved things on the standard vf35. I then switched turbos and they just wernt doing the job. Some would say my car is still mildly tuned, But i have recently added a set of lateral headers and they were mapped for last weekend. Sorry Harvey but the difference is night and day. Just from changing headers ive gained loads of torque and top end power. The spool up point is exactly the same or maybe a little earlier and the car has a much much smoother power delivery.

all these mods were mapped for.. I.E. the ported were mapped on the 35 the ported were mapped on th td05 and now the lateral ones are mapped on the 5

btw im running a td05/18,650 injectors and aps cak on an sti 7

I thought I'd add my (completely non-expert) experience to this thread.
I have a much lower powered car with a TD04 Hybrid turbo. I have Magnex unequal headers. On a Delta Dash run my car made 314bhp and 328 lb/ft.

The torque figure is in the region of 20lb/ft higher than similarly modded cars with ported headers which have had Delta Dash runs on the same stretch of road and been mapped by the same person.

Is this just the luck of the draw, or have the headers themselves made a difference?

Ported headers can offer some minor gains on a mildly tuned car but the right set of tubular headers will provide superior results for not a lot more money.

I have had the same experience as the guys above and I measure this sort of performance on a daily basis on hundreds of cars per year.

There is also a considerable saving of ugly weight from the front of the car

Well, I have just fitted these to my car along with the 20g.

Running actuator pressure only, the car does feel good, it actually pulls from 1500rpm in top gear and really starts to pick up at 2000rpm. With the VF35 and standard headers it would just bork at 1500rpm in top if you wanted to do that. I've not yet tried the top end of things as the car needs mapping to the 20g but the turbo is making 0.2bar at a tad over 2000rpm which is exactly the same as the VF35 did so no backwards step there.

One thing I have noticed, and I've noticed it with fitting to the classic also, these headers actually make the car quieter inside?????? I mean the exhaust note is quieter, its lost the dull thud of the standard headers and now has a grawley bark, a bit like a Renault five turbo but more soo.

Anyway, its a great improvement so far and I'm sure when 1.4+ bar is seen, it will be even better

Very slight fitting issue's on the newage, I had to cut a bit off the under subframe to allow better clearance as the headers did run very close, I couldn't get a flat blade screwdriver between the two so I removed the frame and took the angke grinder to it I now have a good 10mm right round the R/H branch's.

Impressed would be the word to described my reaction.

Interesting to know, we've a similar spec car. I've been comtemplating swapping the ported headers for GT Spec ones.

A fair back to back comparison would be a good read!!

all i can say is mapped by the same mapper on ported headers i was seeing around 350bhp 330torque measured on delta dash, Was advised the mapper he felt the headers were holding it back a little.

Headers replaced with lateral ones which are the same as gt spec/roger clark ones etc. Picked lateral ones cos thet were the best price wise and still excellent quality and came with a roll of wrap.

Mapped again same peice of road and now have 369 and 352

The spool point is almost identical. I cant feel a difference it can only be seen on a laptop. There is much more of a chuck in the back whenfull boost is reached. i assume thats down to the extra torque. The noise is a bit more raspy.

Over all id say a well worth while mod if you have the turbo for it.

I say that cos i was sceptical as i had previously fitted a set to a classic with a td04 and they were awfull on the small turbo.

I think it maybe already answered,

I'd guess ported headers will make better gains on a filter, exhaust & remap set-up but from what i read, if you do anymore, better gains can be had from GT-Spec headers, not saying you wouldn't gain from ported headers though.

The GT Spec headers do have an awesome bark also. I drove through town last night, up a narrow street and thought, I'll just wind the back passenger side window down a little and have a listen (I'm not a boy racer, honest ). When it came on boost I almost **** myself, what a noise never herd one like that before, love it

Cheers for that NN, you big kid !

I'm trying to find time to get my Lateral "kit" on for a re-remap....

Look forward to the local underpass in Leeds city centre some day soon !
