SUBARU SLASHES SERVICE INTERVALS.....
#31
STOP MOANING! When you bought your cars you did so in the knowledge that you would have to service them every 6 months/7500 miles. You have lost nothing and if you didn't like the service intervals you should never have bought the car.
This sort of thing happens all the time in every industry. I boght a new VW 4 years ago, then 3 weeks after warrenties were upgraded from 12 to 36 months. I took delivery of a new PC before Chrismas, now it comes with an onsite warrenty instead of return to base. I bought a digital camera and the next week the price went down £50.
**** happens, stop crying and get over it.
Well done to IM. I am sure this will temp many new buyers.

Faxed my Dutch dealer garage yesterday with repect to service intervals and warranty. They had not received any information on the service intervals (although confirmed 1000 mile not reqd) but did confirm that the warranty on my soon to be delivered MY02 will increase from 1 year to 3 years in line with UK !!
yippee !!!!!

Quote from my dealer whilst querying MY99 servicing was "They're going up to 10k/12 months. This was due to pressure from fleet buyers, who weren't prepared to service at 7.5k/6 months, and were going elsewhere. Subaru aren't happy about it, but there you go!".
Guess as individuals we can't make ourselves heard as well as the fleets on these issues?
Mike.

expect big changes in higher priced cars. Saab already offering 3 years free servicing, this is all to do with the new tax system on company cars.
They are expecting more to opt out and take cash!! So offer incentives!!

Are you telling us that it doesn't bother you because its a company car? Thanks for the support
I have exactly the same engine and drivetrain as a car that rolled off the production line four months later. And for that I get punished by my residual value being less than the MY02.
I couldn't care less when the car gets serviced as I knew when I bought it that it cost a lot to run. What I don't like is that I'll have more difficulty selling my car when the time comes and that residuals will be **** for this model year.
Frankly I am begining to wish I never bought the Scoob now. Dealing with IM and subaru is even worse than Fiat and that is saying something.
Well p'eed off
Nathan..

No thats not what I meant at all
I think a car that is driven hard needs a regular service ( it DOES help that I don't pay for it DIRECTLY ANYWAY)
I believe its IM marketing to boost sales of the much improved MY02
that aerial and key light has much to answer for
I'm all for bagering IM for parity with the MY02's but I believe the car NEEDS the 7.5k/6 month service
Hope that clears my opinion up

If most cars REALLY NEED servicing at 15k intervals is the manufacturer going to risk saying 15k? No! They need to put in a 'safety factor'. The rigorous testing that modern vehicles go through before release is almost to the point of being absurd, cold climate testing at -60º, hot climate at +60º, salt dip artificial sunlight endurance... We test components up to 200 hours full engine power with cool down every 3 hours - thats static no cooling airflow. The system will often be glowing to well past the cat!
The manufacturers are VERY aware of warrenty issues. If Subaru (who actually recommend a semi-synthetic oil I believe?? correct me if I'm wrong ) are now recommending increased service intervals for the same engine 1 year later it would seem pretty logical that the same interval must be OK for the earlier cars. In fact if it is based on previous vehicle data
'These running cost reductions follow an extensive evaluation of the `real world' inservice record of current Subaru models.'
it would seem likely that earlier models also do not require such frequent servicing. Certainly no more regular than the service guide and especially if you use fully-synthetic oil.
Also be aware that every time someone does something to you car there is an opportunity for a mistake to be made - those are what can really cause problems for your vehicle

If this is only going to be for MY02 i ain't too amused!
My MY01 is coming due the 12mth/15K service and has only 8K on the clock. I smell a desperate attempt to shift as many bug-eyes as possible before the Prodrive face lift next year. Surely this has now become a PR stunt to attract more customers who may previously have been put off by the servicing costs of ownership. I personally don't have a huge problem with high service costs on a high performance car but do have a problem with being "shafted" yet again by a constant change in policy to shift more cars.

my 15k service (@ 12k miles!) was £227 inc VAT and included the year 1 body service and waxoyl treatment for underside of car.
Its a MY00 wagon.
Parkes of Exeter BTW and they lent me a WRX for the whole day
Cheers

As servicing costs are such a big deal to us, I'm surprised it took such a while for this thread to get going guys but now it is
I too would be interested to know if this 'thinner running-in oil' situation is a truism or a myth propagated by IM.
It sound like a good policy from a mechanical sympathy point of view (as it reinforces the idea of keeping the revs down for the first 1,000miles) but when I bought my Euro import MY00 they told me that there was no 1,000 mile (1,500km) service required but I did it anyway so as not to put off a potential UK buyer in the future and it 'only' cost me £125 or so.
As far as I know, our cars come of the same production line and arrive in Europe as identical units. They are then 'localised' by IM for the UK's higher security requirements and undersealed (another IM joke? ) before sale.
Is anyone suggesting that they drain the regular oil and fill it up with thinner oil at this point?
Maybe they keep the original oil and then sell it back to us when we bring our cars in for the 1,000 miler [reminds me of that Irvine Welsh / Primal Scream song from Euro'96, but I digress]
Looking at the MY01/MY02, 31/12 Vs. 01/02 registration issue. If there is indeed no mechanical difference between two given cars and one is subject to a more frequent (read: expensive) service regime then I would be pissed-off if I owned the older one.
Surely this is a damage limitation exercise for IM now as they should have made this change a year ago to coincide with the MY01 launch or perhaps limited it to the e-STI (as it has a substantially different engine I believe).
Interesting! But I'm glad I don't work for IM PR right now!
