This was indeed the birth of rave. Imagine a world world without any Hardcore, Jungle, or Drum an' Bass.
No Techno, no Trance, no Garage or Handbag. No 'Breaks' or 'Beats'.
And best of all... no Chemical Brothers...
None of that had been invented yet.....
At that time just about any kind of music would do, as long as it could deliver a credible dancey punch. And it was a pretty eclectic assortment at that.

'Good' is subjective; as is 'sh*te. You might not like it: but you have to regard it....

Just to restore a touch of credibility to this thread...
i.e. 80s *classics* as opposed to 'anything from the 1980s wot I can remember'
Here is another gem from the leaders of the pack at the time, who told it like it was/is....
YouTube - the KLF, (JAMS) its grim up north=
....all IMHO of course....

Ah, my old mate Mark Ronson (and aonther old mate has turned up too apparently)
- Mark is of course latter day genius poised to be bigger than you could ever imagine. But let's not get distracted from this thread's subject. The KLF were indeed presented to the media as a 'joke'... but it was a joke with a serious point to present – about how we are all hoodwinked by the corporate media into accepting what they want us to believe is 'quality' or 'talent' when in fact it's all marketing, exploitation and mediocrity.
On that level The KLF succeeded pretty well and therefore their contribution to 80s music culture may certainly be regarded as 'classic'.
Probably more important than that is the music, videos, and conceptual soundscapes they created whilst padding out the 'joke'. Or perhaps that was just a 'happy accident'?
I don't know where Bill Drummond is now but I take my hat off to him. He's one person I can say I'd love to meet for a drink and a chat.
