Guys - unless you are a Pilot (altimeter?), Diver (waterproof) or a racing fan (chronograph, although as a timing device they're generally pointless and just for fun), Traveller (dual time), you need time and date. Stainless steel or leather strap, unoffensive in appearence and not loosely fitted like a dodgy second hand car dealer etc.

Ladies - sky's the limit as you may require your watch to be an item of jewelry with diamonds etc. You have artistic license to go quite made on what you or your loved one should spend on a wath for you. Have fun.

Any guys behaving like ladies. Oh dear!

Question

Is there a clear market leader in terms of accuracy?

I have a cheap Gucci watch which I bought cause I like the look of it. About 400 quid about 8 years. It is fine but it will insist on gaining a few seconds each week.

It's not a huge problem but it does annoy me, hence my question about accuracy.

Cheers

Early last year I was doing some work for Bulgari and got talking to one of their planning manager types. He was saying that until you get to the REALLY top quality gear of the hand made variety then the big watch manufacturers all buy their movements from one of two factories and then insert them into their watches.

Now obviously they may add certain tweaks and what have you but it doesn't really seem worth getting too hung up on the whole movement thing unless of course you are up for spending serious cash.

Oh yes, and the other thing I discovered is that the standard markup on watches and jewellery is in the region of several hundred percent so be prepared to haggle.

Me, I bought a Tag, purely because I liked it.

I have had a Stainless steel Series 2000 TAG for about 11 years...

I always forget to take it off, and consequently it has taken a real beating, but still looks good (unmarked) and works beautifully. Prior to that, I never had the same watch for more than six months without doing something which killed it, so the TAGS's build quality is sufficiently 'durable'.

They became a lot more expensive when they got trendy eight years ago.. I think most of the more modern TAGS look garish and awful.

Cheers,

A.

Airport prices ('duty free' or otherwise) can be a great place to look. I got a Omega from Manchester airport 4 months ago, UK RRP was £1750, Airport usually sold it for £1350 but had a sale on which put it down to £995. When the assistant scanned it it came up as £750 A cool 60% off RRP

I have a s/s Rolex GMT II. Wanted a TAG 2000, but bought the Rolex after reading Dava Sobel's Longitude - had to have the COSC added (even though it is agreed, even by Rolex lovers, to be marketing bullsh!t). I wanted something bulletproof which never dated. It still looks the same as when they designed it in 1955-odd, and how many people have copied it since? As for the new Omega Seamasters - barf.

Spent a year reading www.turfers.com (The Ultimate Rolex Forum) which seems to have closed down now, but the FAQs (Turf nuggets) are still there. I don't miss it, it started off like Scoobynet (great community), ended up being "owned" by Americans who would always discuss how big their guns were and would throw their freedom of speech toys out of their pram when a thread got moderated - even though the board was owned by a Malaysian .

Fakes - the common statement on TURF was "Impressing others is no substitute for impressing yourself." Looking at mine after 3 yrs still gives me pleasure to think that I worked for it and bought it. As for the sweep or tick; most fakes have quartz movements (which tick) but many have now got wise and contain mechanical movements (which sweep). See if it has the numbers behind the pins, too. No Rolex has numbers stamped on the back.

Bought mine s/h (5 yrs old) in Central London for 1600, RRP at the time was 2170 with a 6-mth waiting list minimum. I understand that, as stated by one poster above, Rolex is one of the few watches to appreciate in value over the years, almost all others (certainly Breitling and TAG) would depreciate.

Mine's currently gaining up to 10 seconds a day, which is far too much for me; IIRC COSC standards are -4/+6 secs per day. Mechanical watches vary in their reliability according to how you rest them at night (face up, face down, crown up, etc), or leave it on your wrist. I don't think there is any rule HOW, unfortunately, and I can't be arsed to figure mine out. You will be lucky to get anywhere close to the reliability of a quartz watch. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I repeat you will be lucky.

Servicing is every five years, 175. Salsa, get yours seen to mate. Then forget about it for the next five years. The comment on Turf was "would you ignore your car engine oil?" Not an entirely accurate comparison, but reasonably so.

Previously I had a Pulsar imitation dive watch for 14 yrs which I adored, we went through a lot together (skiing, bungee, Russia, Mongolia etc), but Seiko no longer kept the parts and it had to go. I asked my dad to bin it when I'd left the house as I couldn't bring myself to (sob sniff smiley). Shouldn't happen with my current one.

Ironically I bought the GMT over the Submariner as I travelled so much. I now have a 5 yr contract in Portugal and travel mainly to the UK which is the same time zone! I also got an all-black bezel as I can't stand the showy "Pepsi" 2-tone one.

As for dressing down - wear your Rolex with a black military strap. Much less "expensive" than the steel one. But you can guess which I wear when I ask to test-drive new cars

or do this....

when i was 19ish i decided i wanted a nice watch, couldnt afford one at the time so i told myself i'd never wear a watch till i could get a good one... and didnt!

in 1999 i was at last able to buy a nice watch so i trotted of to 5th ave. NY and got myself a breitling (£1,000ish)

not having worn a watch for the previous 8 years it was a nightmare, kept bashing it, scratching it, forgeting it. finally i forgot it in the gym one day (pulse8 in reading in case you found it!) and havent seen it since then- about a year ago.

i can now not buy a watch cause there is no way i'd buy a nice one having just chucked £1,000 away and the flash 19 year old in me wont buy a cheap one!

so i'll never wear a watch again and its superb! time dont matter anymore, i'm late all the time wake up when its sunny go to bed when its dark- what more do you need!

Tiggs (watchless and happy again!)

ps- still like to find the git that picked up my watch by the rower and decided not to hand it in

if you had bought a ROLEX you wouldn't have to take it off (why take your watch off anyway when you went to the gym) cus they stand up to almost anything!!
i play golf! and that puts a lot of stress on the watch on your left arm.....miss hitting the ball as you do! lol

just reading all your posts!! as i flip the double clasp on the S/Dweller slip it off...feel the 5oz weight of the REAL thing!!! thinking......service it????? CLUTCH needs doing (in at the mo) service watch???? its at the end of list of priorities at the mo!
but i hear wot you say Diablo/Bren

I know watch oil dries up and....etc etc, But it works well (with it only gaining 5mins & no more than that) and i feel relutant to get it seen to while it works.

wot do you call a flashy watch???????

solid gold Rolex's! too Market Trader'y for me!
very OTT

Realy...... I have known of many cases where a Rolex has been sent of to be repaired and fake bits have been used. Omega faces and straps are the worst for this.
The very good ones use an top spec automatic ETA movement. it does sound a bit different to be honest.. The weight is spot on. They have real screws in the strap. A proper plastic Hologram on the back (The cheap ones have a hologram sticker)
The date is the correct size and the magnification is perfect. The correct finnish is used on the side of the strap and the case etc.
I could go on. I realy do know about this "Market" I have made thousands from it. I know of many who claim they have the real thing but have been ripped off.
Do you know the exact number locations on your watch. How you can tell for which ( usa ,Europe, far east, etc) market they where sold???
I have seen it all when it comes to the "High End" of the fake watch market. One was sold last year for $50,000+ !!!!! at auction. It had been specialy made.

Why do I wear one... Why not ???? If I was going to spend good money, it would not be a Rolex thats for sure.
Also i get offered good money for mine. I would never sell it as real, but complete with both boxes( not the Photocopy jobs!!)around £300.00.

What sort of insurance is avaliable on watches and where do you get it from? I really want to get an Omega Seamaster and have found a place that wil do it with 20% off, but I don't want to walk out of the shop without insurance!

Luke...

Which is why my watches have always been serviced by Rolex UK

IIRC the ETA movements have a different BPM (higher?) than the Rolex movements, although I could be thinking of another movement.

And yes, I know where to find the numbers

The fakes you describe are the high end replicas, and fair point, it is virtually impossible to tell without taking them to bits.

The two automatic fakes I have seen were about half the cost of a real one (still a significant amount) and there were subtle but still identifyable differences in font and positioning of text. Neither had the "o" ring gasket in the crown stem. Both were Subs.

D

Still question why you wear a "fake" - would you drive a sport with a scoop and a high wing?

house insurance will only cover a watch outside the home if the policy has accidental belongings loss (or whatever its called!) on the policy.

most policies dont seem to provide it as standard so get it added if you havent got it!

Good news you get yours serviced by Rolex direct. I once sorted 15. watches for a watch repairer in London. Sometimes he would "Offer" the fake part to his customers. But Most of the time he would just go a head and con them.some Omega faces are NOT copies on the good fake ones.....They come from the same source.
The Mercedes hand is also a good clue to the quality but you have to look very close to tell.
They have even got the sound and movement of the bezel right.

A lot of folk out their have fakes and dont know it >>>>

A mate once had the weekend of his life with a lady who he gave a Cartier to (afterwards) !!! He said it was the best £100.00 he could ever spend. She wanted the watch so much.To this day she is still showing it off. It still looks great. The quality of the leather strap is superb.

The trick is "Stay away from the Gold ones" and "Make sure the Steel is not plated brass.

Why do i wear one?? Because I am confident, what I wear makes no difference.Same reason could apply to why some own a Subaru. They hope it will make them stand out a bit from the rest. me i am happy with a 94 legacy!! If i wanted a Porsche ,it would be outside my door tomorrow... (So would I be when the wife found out!!)But could i afford to,no not realy.

ALWAYS get your Rolex serviced direct by Rolex UK if you can. They're in Bexley, Kent. Dealers just add a percentage on the price and two weeks on the waiting time. As for posting, I once went in to our local post office and saw the jewellers' manager posting some plain little boxes to the RWCo, Bexley, Kent, by just passing them over the counter to be weighed and stamped. They looked familiar shapes. He might have had 30k's worth but done like that, who'd know?

I got mine covered on house insurance, named items over 500 quid. Needed a valuation from a jeweller. I took it to one, he glanced at it on my wrist and handed me a price list, said "that usually is all they want." Such quality control. Luke, can I have a few of your fakes please?

Andy (and everyoen else) take a look at this:

http://www.poljot.com/

They are Russian watches, very good value, and if you read the history you will find that they are essentially Swiss movements. A collegue bought one recently and it's made really well (especially when you consider the price).

They can be had at a good price at the following:

http://www.russia2all.com/watches/poljot/default.htm

http://www.chronomaster.co.uk/poljot_watches.htm

Cheers,
Darren.

Hi,
I have been looking for a decent watch for about 3 months.Want to spend around £1000.
From what i have learn't be VERY,VERY careful if you think about getting one off the internet.
There are loads of fakes around and many of them are very good indeed. You can actually buy fake rolexes which come with fake papers. They also have mechanical movements so that they 'sweep' rather than 'tick'.

The other thing to remember about automatic watches is that they need servicing. If you buy a used watch make sure it has some sort of service record,or that the shop will get it serviced by the manufacturer. Some authorised dealers have a good secondhand selection as people tend to trade their old watches in for a new one.
I was in Berry's last week in Leeds and they had a 5 year old used Breitling, just been serviced,in excellent condition £595.Price new approx £1500.
If you want a rolex new/used there is a really good rolex forum.

http://www.newturfers.com/forum/

Myself i just can't make up my mind.I like the Omega seamaster, just want somewhere to get it for a good price,i also like Breitling.Rolex, not too sure.I'm sure they are good but they are expensive, and IMO tend to have a bit of a 'del boy' image.

Anyway thats my experience so far.

If you're spending a reasonable amount (2 or 3k) on a watch then go to the best place in the world to buy watches, Kuala Lumpur. There are literally dozens of shops selling only watches there, mostly grouped together so you can haggle like crazy. All pukka stuff and you should be able to save enough compared with the UK price to cover the airfare and have a bit of a holiday somewhere whilst you're there.
I got an Ebel there - not too ostentatious but a real quality watch that will last me a lifetime.

As I understand it, Ebel changed importers a couple of years ago. I believe the current import/service agent is SwiCo who handle a couple of other brands.

I think they're cracking, esp., the new SportWave and the Beluga (lady's barrel watch). As previously mentioned, *very* understated.
