Adverts On Right Hand Side - Your Input Welcomed
#31
They will change randomly but depend on where you are in the world at the time, and sometimes what content is on the page.
They will sometimes stay the same for a number of refreshes, and sometimes change every time, so its difficult to say.
Your experience will be different to mine, to the next person.

Thank you so much for such a supportive post.
In terms of the focus of the wrong type of advert. That's what we're trying to tweak now.
Big brands have pulled out of just about EVERYTHING that is user generated content. They haven't targetted scoobynet specifically.
We'll be fine, so there's no need to worry, as we'll get these other units working, and will continue to make the subscription services more and more valuable to everyone which will increase the sign up.
Ideally, eventually, we will do away with the adverts altogether, but for now, they are a necessary evil (having said that, the one on the right wouldn't be necessary at all if it wasn't for the Coffin Dodger leech element).

In terms of clicking ads to earn us revenue.
Some ads yes, some no.. However, please do not click the ads unless you're actually interested.
I really wouldn't be morally correct for us to earn money that way, and to be honest, the ad companies would pick it up, and probably just ignore all your clicks from then on, etc.

Do you think it's a short-term blip, or likely to persist longer term?
Incidentally I'm now logged in from home and the ad on the right has changed from pirate puzzles to car insurance. "Carbon neutral" car insurance, bizarrely enough - I guess if there's a bandwagon to be jumped on...

nb. I've just refreshed this page a few times and the ad has changed every time - two different ones for Sky TV, one for a holiday camp, and one for the soft, strong and highly absorbent Sun newspaper. At work I had the pirate puzzles thing all afternoon.

I'm with Markus, I no longer register them.
However, having refreshed a few pages I see ads for AA, Haven and Orange. All unobtrusive and inoffensive.

I get German Banner ads at work (german servers)
and UK stuff at home...
fail to see what relevance the annoying fart button crap is...
and "No" i dont want to press it
The other stuff is sometimes laughable for its content (coach trips (lol) & virgin broadband) given that its oft moaned about in the computing section

Smiley Central is not a good place to go if you ask me. The last time I looked at that it was an adware/spyware infested hole that just wanted to grab your homepage, install toolbars and constantly monitor where you go. I would encourage webby to look into that one, as if its still as bad as it was then I would suggest that adverts promoting adware are not appropriate for any site. Maybe they have changed it now, dunno A link to some info on the place: Smiley Central - Gladiator Security Forum I cannot go there, my security software won't let me view the site.

Why ask? Surely your CTR is going to tell you if the new adverts are working / better or worse?
Advertising is always a numbers game. You throw enough **** at the wall and some of it will stick!
With such a broad range of forum users what advert floats one persons boat another will hate.
Personally I very rarely click on any advert on any forum.

Our best CTR will come from huge intrusive, aggressive noisey adverts. But that doesn't mean they are what we want.
We're a community first. The ads are there to serve the community, not the other way round. So for us, it is vital that a happy medium is found. We're not willing to just chase the quick buck.
This is just us talking to you and us all deciding on the way we go with things together, as it should be.

Andy I reckon they'll all be back onboard by christmas, but that's still 6 months of a hole.
The difference between UGC and normal websites, is that the advertiser can tell one person "don't put up anything like this" and can keep an eye on it. but a UGC site such as scoobynet, allows the freedom of users to post up any old rubbish (even if its only likely to last a few minutes before you all sort them out! ).

Cheers guys

I'm not seeing smiley central or any of its awful ilk, just AA on the right, Virgin Media advertising a trip to a superbike race along the bottom and Redline magazine on the top banner, so all is good at the mo.

Seems to vary a lot, then. I've got the same Virgin ad at the bottom, but an ad for a casino at the top, and "Sun" Bingo at the right.
Given that my entire lifetime gambling history consists of having shoved a few quid in slot machines, they're WAY off the mark in terms of targeting.

Simon,
I have no problem with the ads. After all, Scoobynet has grown so much over the years it is now quite a large commercial concern and anything that helps to pay to keep it going is good in my book - within reason.
The ads are discretely out of the way and only the ones that give me a headache are the ones that annoy me but you have to take the rough with the smooth - "Fart Button" being a prime example of a headache generating ad!
On a side note, the self-moderation, infraction and ability to ban new users seems to have settled down and appears to be working well as part of the furniture.
Well done guys, keep up the good work!

There shouldn't be a single pop up on scoobynet ever. If there was, this can only be a mistake in some settings. As much info as possible please.

The limits of computers do not stretch quite to telepathy yet!
So they're not going to get it bang on. What I really want to get to though, is that we have an AVERAGE of a fairly high quality ad.

Phil
Thank you re fart button. Could you please do the same and check the url, as this really shouldn't be showing now, so the only reason I can think it would, is if its being served by another network.
-
SJ, thanks a lot sir
And, agreed, the ban button and infractions have made an incredibly positive difference to the site. Thanks for your support.

That BLOODY FART BUTTON ad, should be gone for good now. I found a couple of sneaky ones which I've just dissabled. Please once more.. if its still there after 9pm UK time, please let me know.
Thanks Phil

Some feedback for you from over the pond. I'm using Safari 2 and so far the only advert I've been seeing on the right hand side is for classmates.com. I don't seem to be getting any other ads. Sods law states as soon as I click post I'll see something else I'll try and keep a note of what adverts I am seeing.
