Used to use any SUL I could find for my WRX, but found amazing inconsistancy in the qaulity of the fuel. Sometimes after a fill-up the car would hardly pull - to the extent that I thought something had broken! I believe the additives put in SUL can break down over time, so a rarely-used pump could have the equivalent of NUL.
I now stick to Optimax wherever I go because of it's supposed gauranteed RON rating, and so far haven't had any problems.

don't know if i am a bit odd but in the cold is the afect off "better" fuel reduced

Always used Esso. Tried a couple of tanks of Optimax and not impressed. Car was noticebly slower.
Surely if optimax was better than Esso then the car shouldn't have been slower. Even if the ECU hadn't adjusted then surely the performance should have stayed the same.
Anyway, went back to Esso and got the Tiger back in my tank. And in the 0 temperatures we've been having I have never been to 70+ so quick in my life.

Tried Optimax and after a couple of tanks seemed to be getting better MPG. Squeezed out 270 previously lucky to get 240. I should add that MPG seems to be getting better with gradually as the miles go on (15K now) - or am I getting slower?
No noticeable difference in performance or smoothness though.
Anyway - interesting reading from Australia here: http://www.autospeed.com/A_0429/page1.html

Happy New Year all..
.. Have run my mildly modified MY00 on SUL since new. Thought I'd give Optimax a go when it came out and I have to say it gave noticeably poorer performance.
I cover a lot of miles with my job (50k p/a) and have found Esso SUL to be the best every time (unfortunately it isn't widely available in Central London).
IMHO though the best way to run a Scoob is on SUL with octane booster. The difference (with my car anyway) is amazing.
FYI BuRR I get mine from Scoobyparts.co.uk (box of 10).
Well worth it.
Cheers,
Scottdg

Perhaps not in the same vane here but......
Would the Optimax / SUL fuel make an improvement on a N/A performance engine, i have a VR6 and are thinking of giving it a tank or to to try out !
I take it any car that runs on unleaded petrol is suitable for using Optimax even if there is little or no perfromance increase ?
Cheers all,
Phill

On my previous MY96 UK Wagon it ran the same on Esso SUL as on NUL.... so when I got my new wagon also a UK MY96 I just ran it on NUL. Then the other week I thought I'd try SUL at an Esso and straight away it ran smoother and I got more miles to a tank.
Then tried Optimax and it was better still with improved low down power and pick up and on a slow cruise (following my father-in-law on holiday) I got 320miles from a tank!!!!!! have since been
using Optimax when I can get it or Esso SUL... how can Esso warrent SUL higher that LRP though? bit off...
Optimax for me where possible from now on...

I use Optimax in my Evo VI exclusively - seems to go OK but looking at the mileage rates over a 5,000 mile period the mpg is identical (to the tenth of a mile) to Sainsbury's SUL I was running it on before.
I only use Optimax because it's cheaper - Sansburys' SUL is now about 5p a litre more!!

The bottom line is.....
a) if you have a linked car you may need to get a new map for optimax or your car may run like a dog.
b) optimax is cheaper so why spend any more money with the Oil Companies and the government than you have to ????
