He's hanging in there, that's got to be a good thing.

Still in all our thoughts.

Things have come on in leaps and bounds since my last update.

Paul is now sitting up in bed and breathing for himself, although he is still on oxygen.
He has ripped his feeding tube out, and refuses to have it back in, so yesterday they tried him on some mushy food and water, and he managed to swallow it
He was given a pencil and paper a few days ago and he keeps writing stuff over and over, forming letters but nothing makes sense.
His mental state is still an unknown quantity at the moment, he has had a few aggressive episodes towards family members, although there are some that he recognises and some he just looks at blankly.
If you give him a newspaper he seems to be reading it, he looks at the front page then turns straight to the back for the football. Sometimes he frowns at it, as if he understands the scores
Thing is we just dont know what he knows.

All in all, he is making good progress physically, so thats good news. Hopefully everything else will improve in time

congratulations, this sounds excellent news steph.

lets just hope the mental thing isnt too serious, and he can recover to lead as normal-a life as possible.

Wow, im sitting here gobsmacked by what I have just read, but have to say the last post by Steff makes me breathe a sigh of relief.

Im so happy to get to this part where he is making a strong recovery.

I shall be thinking of everyone involved in this and watching the thread like a hawk. My prayers are with you and Paul. Sounds like a strong guy who will pull through without a doubt.

As for the person who did this... absolute scum, no excuse, and really needs a severe punishment for it.

Thats great news Steff. We all wish him the very best.

Doesn`t every bloke glance at the front page, then turn the paper over for the footie news? Its a man thing

Please continue to keep us updated with Pauls progress.

Regards

Ant

Just hope, that unlike me, he's not a West Ham fan!

I too am really glad to hear of this really positive update. I really hope is mental acuity does return.

I would also like to know what is happening to the people that did this. The coppers have had enough time to actually have finished their donuts and coffee by now...

Great to hear a positive update - though clearly still a long way to go. I promise you that Headway will really help right now, so if the family haven't called already, then they really should. Headway will be able to give loads of advice and support as everyone tries to come to terms with what's happened/ happening.

Checking for updates on this story has been the only thing that's lured me in here recently - glad to hear it's sounding so positive!

Overjoyed to hear all that Steph. Sounds to me that he is gradually sliding back into his normal personality and hopefully it is just a matter of time and patience for him.

He is a pretty strong bloke alright!

Have just had a phone call from my dad to tell me that my uncle(who is more like a best mate as he's only 5 years older than me) is in hospital in intensive care. His condition is described as critical but stable.

Apparently, whilst out on a birthday do in Preston last night, he was set upon by a gang of youths.

Its a long tale, but the basic gist is that his friend and his wife had had a row with their 18yr old daughter whilst in the club. She had stormed out and Paul had gone outside to make sure she got safely into a taxi and home. She was talking to a youth outside who we believe to be her secret boyfriend. Secret because mum and dad seriously disapproved of him.

Paul had tried to get her to go home with him, and this lad and his mates didnt want her to go, so they battered him to within an inch of his life.

His face is black and swollen, he has a fractured skull and his brain is swollen to the point that they have had to drill into his head to let the pressure off. They say IF he survives the next three days, they will try and bring him round to assess his level of likely brain damage. He is likely to lose his sight in one eye too.

I just cant believe it, Paul is the most laid back, non confrontational person i know, but from what witnesses have said, it was completely unprovoked. The incident was captured on cctv and the person responsible arrested this afternoon. That is as much as we know at this stage.

I see/hear this sort of thing every day, as most of you will know, but when it happens to someone you know and love very much, its shocking.
I feel so helpless, but there is nothing i can do from here.
Please cross everything you have for him, and pray to god he makes a full recovery. I'll keep you updated
Steph x
I'm sorry to hear of this: I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery!

These kind of incidents are becomming as common as they are sickening!

I just simply cannot conceive of how anyone who lays claim to be a human being can set about a single individual with a group of mates. Utter cowardice!!

Sorry folks, you have been so great, and i've neglected to update you!

Paul is now rid of all his tubes, and feeding himself, although he forgets whats he's doing and has to be reminded to eat and drink. He looks like hell as he's not getting the food he needs, but he's trying. He's trying to say the odd word, but nothing much at the moment. He is managing to walk a few steps, but cant go very far. His memory isnt good at all, he seems to remember some people, and not others. The medical staff are hoping to move him to the brain trauma unit in the next few weeks. He has improved immensely physically, but his mental state is still unknown.
Things are progressing very slowly now, hence the periodic updates, but if anything major happens, i will let you know.

Great news to hear that he is making progress after he was so gravely ill. He must be a tough bloke.
