Oh yes - 2 years old in September, so been through the puppy stage although overall she's been really good - hasn't destroyed anything.

 

I have owned a Weimariner and a Jack Russell .

The Weimariner was an exceptional animal interms of intelligence and his attitude with my children. Unfortunately his demeanor changed after he caught and ate a hare . He did not change in the home or with the family , but wanted to fight every dog he encountered. A stunning dog to look at and would recommend as a family dog , but does need lots of exercise!

Surely everybody loves Jack Russells ? They are funny and have lots of bottle,was over protective with my wife though -apparently a trait with them.Liberty takers but in away adds to their attraction.

a jack russel would be first choice as they have more charecteristics in its left paw than most dogs put together and fantastic with children if brought up with them from pups or a close second would be a spriger spaniel

Completely reliable, great with kids and other dogs, and the funniest dog I've ever seen - just full of personality and character.

As long as you can stand it killing hedgehogs, squirrels, frogsm ducks, mice and rats now and then you won't regret it.

Mine spends many an hour dangling from branches of trees in my garden. He just dangles whilst growling. Crazy!

Our friend's 6 year old son was bitten on the face by a Jack Russell, they are terriers remember.

 

Border Collie gets my vote.I have 2 pups (well 22 weeks old now).They have come from working sheep dogs,and as suggested in this thread they require alot of attention especially mental stimulation(I give them a crossword puzzle every now and again).I plan to get them into agility/flyball when they are old enough.
As with any breed of dog,the more training you put in the more rewarding it is for you and the dog.

I agree with this. My pedigree dogs were all either dopey or agressive. My mongrels where always the smartest, least likely to fall ill of a diesease and most fun to own.

I find collies too unpredictable (parents have had two) - properly trained they make great pets but they are the one dog I put our lab on a lead for when walking by.

Can't beat a lab for child friendliness and trainability.

 

A wisely chosen cross breed can be an exceptional choice.

Our old dog was a Staff Bull Terrier cross Lab. Lived to be 20 years old, only vets bills were due to a car accident and towards the end of his life. A more loving, and loyal friend you could not wish to have in your life, but he was tough, tenacious and a good guard dog too!

NEVER been to a vet and have ZERO interest in kids. They aren't "Good with kids"...they couldnt give a toss about them and leave the room when the kids come in. Perfect dog!

Also dont care for humans much either so none of this jumping up pleased to see you nonsense....they eat and run and sleep!

 

This pedigree vs mongrel thread could easily turn into a house buying vs renting scrap!

Go for whatever - it just sounds better at the pub when your dog has a trackable lineage ten generations back. And that's all that matters to most it would seem

 

You really need to think before you type, hard I know but give it a try sometime. All scoobs are chav I'm guessing you don't own one??

I have had staffs for years and not one of them has ever attacked another dog or person, they are great with kids and adults. Everyone has there favorites but you can't go wrong with a staff as long as you train it properly and make sure it plays with other dogs from a puppy.

I often get old couples coming up to me when out walking saying how they use to have staffies and what a great dog they are. My parents had a sheep dog and there is know way I would let it near my kids.

The retractable antlers are a great form of defence when challenged for a fight by small ankle snappers, but the bells do tend to give him away when he is sneaking up on small children/other chav dogs.

I've had a black lab for the best part of 8 years now she is fantastic she loves my niece to bits she's only 3 and she is quite protective of her labs have to be one of the softest dogs around

i do fancy a newfoundland myself but they are just huge!

my brother had a staffie until a few weeks ago where he escaped out of the front door and savaged our cousins dogs face, im not saying all staffies are like that he was a lovely dog but i knew deep down that he would end up doing something like that but thank god it wasnt my nieces face it ripped apart.
