Speed camera legality challenge

Regarding the 6 months and 1 day thing, I thought you had 2 weeks (or was it 4?) in which time you had to recieve an accurate Notice Of Intended Prosecution or you could not be charged, or is that made up?

NotREV,
That's not made up but if you get stopped by a copper, they can issue you with a verbal NIP on the spot. They then don't have to send you anything other than the summons which can be up to six months from the date of the offence.
Hope that clears it up for you....

Speedking
(RR_WW FYI)
Certainly having the human touch is a much better system, but how many Gatso sites are there? Whose going to want to stand in the pissing rain on a Saturday night in case someone speeds by. (Maybe the same type of people who become Traffic wardens? ) Yes it would cost money but the cost would be so high its not even worth investigating.
p.s. Cheers for all the legal advice, told me mate today at work. HUGE grin spread accross his face.

You'll also find that a few processes get dropped at court, because people play the game and dispute the fact that it was them when the police stopped and spoke to them.
For example: Joe Bloggs get stopped for speeding (or any other traffic offence for that matter)in Newport (for example) town centre. Refuses a ticket and elects to be reported for said offences.
Upon receipt of the summons, disputes that it was him driving. Says "it must have been someone else giving my details - people sometimes borrow my car"
A letter then goes to the police officer asking him/her if they can identify the offender. If not, the case becomes "iffy" and chances are it will be dropped.
This identity problem has promoted the changing of several police process documents, in an attempt to challenge this.
Some of you may realise that a new "producer" or HO/RT1 document has been released - which has portions to substanciate the driver's description and identifying features, and some also include a space for a voluntary fingerprint.
....I'm rambling on here. Thanks for listening
