I would pay up and move on, otherwise every time you drop the little one off at the new nursery or there's a problem of any kind, you will feel responsible / made to feel resonsible.

Provide a cheque with a covering letter stating the following:

At the time of the offence, you should have been notified of the need for an excess payment and given the right to have an open discussion on the subject.

CCTV is for security and safety purposes only. The Data Protection Act does not permit persons with access to the CCTV records to review the recorded images with a view to settling disputes over timekeeping - what would other parents think if their movements were being recorded to be used later against them?

The pedant in me can't help but pointr out though that technically, if you didn't get out of your car until news had finished, you must have entered the premises after 6pm

If it were me though, I'd still pay it, just to save your son the grief of a change of nursery.

Mark it down to experience though, and bear it in mind should the nursery approach you at any point for anything

If this was the first time you've been late then the nursery is being unreasonable. If there was an accident which caused a few parents to be late then they're being unreasonable. If you've done it before then you should have known better.

As you are only going there 2 days a week, the nursery will not mind losing you as you're potentially taking up a full week slot which is more important to the nursery.

If you feel that your child is making good progress at nursery then I would pay the £5 and make sure you're there before 6pm next time. If they delay you once you're in through the door then thats their problem. Continuity of care is far more important then £5 and a little pride.

Do not use this as an excuse to have a go at the manager to the owner. If you want to complain about the manager do so at a later date or the owner will just think you're having a pop back and wont do anything about the managers attitude.

I wouldnt bother paying the £5 in pennies to spite them as it takes no time to run coins through a money sorter and in to bank bags.

The news on Radio1 sometimes runs late, if you're basing your whole argument on this, then you should stop and pay the £5.

The late fee is there to make sure people dont take the mick. I'm not saying that you do, but there are some that do it, just be thankful its only £5 and not £15.

Dave, is Dylan only counting to 20 at his age, well i suppose its 18 more than his father can LOL.

I know what you are saying with regard the rules, my way of retaliation would be the £5 in pennies as already mentioned and also i would leave him there one day as late as possible just to prove a point that you are not a#sed with the added cost.

When you go and pick him up late tell the old cow if she is nice you will pay the additional in 5 pence pieces this time as opposed to pennies.

Ohh and one day feed him loads of Harribo sweets just before arrival time with a can of full fat Coke or Rola Cola to wash them down, he will run round like a Duracell bunny all day taking 2 staff on his own to keep him happy.

did they tell you on the day that you were late - if so pay up

If it is the next day then why did it take them so long.

the thing that would annoy me was not being told there and then - why leave it til the next day ?

I would agree with the CCTV comment made earlier, unless you consented to them checking the CCTV or there are signs telling you that CCTV is in operation.

End of the day - what happened to customer service?

i'd ask them to justify the fee for 2 minutes. if they had to keep an extra member of staff around then just maybe but otherwise i'd agree with the earlier point that there should bee some leeway, £5 after first five minutes or immediately if you turn up a few minutes late everyday.

Also agree with the arrive at 6:45 and see how far your fiver goes.

I know it seems over the top to charge you a fiver for being just a bit late, but if it is clearly stated in the terms I think you have little option but to pay, even if it is under duress!

I imagine that from their point of view, it would be very irritating if parents were continually late and their time was being eaten into and that's is why they slap a significant penalty on you to discourage it.

If you look at it like that and put yourself into their place you might not feel so bad about the fiver.

Update: We've reached a compromise and we've paid but got them to agree to change the way they handle this situation.

What had really got my back up was that as stated, I genuinely beleived I wasn't late, no one said anything on the day about me being late. On the next day, they simply tucked the invoice (in an envelope) into the report book which was then put in Dylan's bag, so I wasn't even aware of it until I got his report book out to see what he'd been up to that day hence me getting my back up.

Dylan was picked up at 17:57 today, without incident

Ian, he probably takes 2 to look after him anyway, he's a bloody nightmare for demanding attention

Everything is sweet, still modding Nick A's car, new brake lines on Wednesday night and i'm upgrading his dash to the new 07 model. Yes i know when will he stop the modding.

It has had full suspension recently ohh and brakes.

Still have my SAAB Aero which i love, when i drive Nicks car its quick but ohh so loud and un cultured, cant be doing without me luxuries now when i'm driving.

I would simply pay the fine.....in pennies.

Dont be late again.

Nursery fees, dont you just love them....you pay when the baby is with you on holiday, you pay when they are at home sick, you pay bank holidays, you pay for them to sleep for two hours a day, then wonder why the ******* wont go to bed until 10 oclock........love it, kidz, best thing I ever did !

In a bizarre twist, the nursery sent our cheque back with a short note about gesture of goodwill blah, blah, blah.

Of course, we didn't write a cheque for £5 knowing full well that it'll probably cost them a few quid to cash it in their bank
