I know it's not the same as Canada or Oz but I'd had enough of England and in Jan moved to Northern Ireland.

Bought land here a couple of years ago with planning pemisson for a resonable sum and went about selling up etc.

Although it's still UK things are totally different and life couldn't be better. Our land now worth four times our buying price and land/ property prices risinig by 37 - 50% PA. Massive amounts of money being spent here.

My life has never been better and I've never been happier...... escape from mainland UK ASAP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hopefully it will be switzerland for me in no longer than 5 years time. i have really had enough of the uk, in a lot of ways i will miss things and the people i work with and spend time with.

basically though this country needs to sort its act out and focus more on those who are british not everyone who wants to come over and live on the dole at our expense.

the fact that after placing a job advert at the job centre for a gateman on our building site and being told i cant ask for an english speaking person upset me more.
makes you realise what a pc nonsense country this really is.
great britain is well and truly going down the swanny!

From the research I have done they usually return because of family issues , I wouldn't say it was a high percentage though , something like 20% in Canada .

It's quite possible the people still love the UK, however they don't like what has become of it and where things are heading with no sign of any beneficial changes.

Let us take, as an example, the march of the illegal immigrants. Why were they not rounded up, questioned, and if indeed they were found to be illegally residing in the UK, deported within 7 days. There is an immigration process in place, use it, if you do not, expect to deported. Did anything happen? Not as far as I'm aware.
If a march *against* illegal immigrants was held then you can bet that there would have been many, many arrests, and the media would have been branding anyone who took part a racist. Double standards methinks.

We have people sucking the benefit system dry because they cannot be bothered to work, nothing is really done to stem this.

New immigrants are having housing requests acted upon before those who have been resident here for, in some instances, many years.

Motorists are treated as though they are the most despicable criminals ever known to man or beast, and they are seen as a great source of cash when it comes to speed cameras, which are claimed to be "safety cameras" when it's plainly known by everyone that they are simply there for revenue generation.

We have a problem whereby there is a complete lack of respect for others by the majority of youths. Examples such as throwing bricks at firefighters as they try and tackle a fire, Happy Slapping, and other general chav like behaviour.

Granted not all of these are unique to the UK.

I relocated to Toronto (Canada) in 2003, I'd never visted Canada, let alone Toronto before, though I had visited various states in the US over the previous years, so I am one of those who relocated without having been to the place I was moving to. It wasn't and isn't perfect, some of the issues I encountered when relocating have been addressed, for example, we were told you could exchange your UK driving license for an Ontario DL, without having to enter the graduated licence system. This turned out to be a lie, however, as of 2004 you can now do this.
Other things have not changed, for example, a monthly charge to have a bank account, which is very odd to someone coming from the UK who has never had to pay to have a bank account.
There are some major plus points though, quality of life being the biggest. I will be able to get a decent mortgage enabling me to purchase a reasonable property (3 bedroom semi, 2 bathrooms, fully finished basement, garden and located in a nice area) something I'd not be able to do in the UK due to the rather high property prices.

 

I'm not knocking people who want to leave, and especially those who actually do. But I can understand people saying: fine, either do something about it or go somewhere else!

But there aren't many comments like that are there?. And for people who like the UK, saying it's crap and going to the dogs etc is a bit 'nasty' too.

There are lots of good places in the world. I'm staying here because it's my home and my life is good. I live in one of the great cities of the world and I love it.

That said, if I had to live up north I'd be off in a flash

There was an article recently in the Canadian press about immigrants to Canada.

Amongst highly qualified immigrants (graduates etc), 50% of them return to their home country within a year due to difficulty securing work related to their qualifications in Canada. Also, many qualifications will gain you entry to Canada (such as accountancy quals), but are not recognised in Canada when it comes to getting a job. An accountant will have to sit all Canadian accountancy exams, for example.

As I've discussed many times on SN, I emigrated to Toronto in 2003, but returned to the UK in 2005. There are many reasons, but the main ones were due to the way you get new jobs.

75% of jobs in Canada are never advertised because they have a culture of hiring someone they know, however tenuous the connection.

I would also warn people contemplating emigrating abroad because of disallusionment with the UK that they are potentially heading for disappointment. The country you move to may not have the issues causing you to want to leave the UK, but I guarantee there will be other things in the new country that will be just as annoying, they'll just be different.

The cliche "the grass is not always greener" is often very pertinent if you are leaving the UK for the wrong reasons.

 

I personally spent in total around the 3-4 month mark in total in my destination (NY) last year, several months the previous year, and Ive been there 6 times already this year.
There may be some minor issues with the US that bug me- but the overwhelming majority for me is vastly better than the uk. With that amount of time spent there its not like I'm going into it with a tourist mentality or not having done my research.
I do agree with your point though that its not always greener and for a lot of people going blindly into it they may get a culture shock.
But then, you only live once, so nothing ventured nothing gained.

 

I love this country.

Avoid town centres, avoid watching the news and everything is just great!
