Hillclimb on Sunday, weather permitting. Forecast is for rain despite having 30degree temps for the past week.
Gearbox rebuilt yesterday and fitted tonight. car gets started tomorrow, a quick test on some deserted roads and away we go for Sunday.

The paint work has taken a beating over the past 18 months with pollution from exhausts plus, rain, dust, dirt etc being baked on by the hot Cyprus sun. Have spent seven hours so far claying it and removing all old stickers. Once I get it back will get out the polisher and do a proper job. Race cars still ave to look good.
Did not fit the AST, as was worried about too many things being changed on the car in one go - power, weld in cage and PPG box

No time to test on the mountain roads, although I have seen the course and it is quite bumpy and narrow with cliff walls on one side and drop on the other, although most sections did have guard rails. Will head out there late tomorrow night with my new bugeye for some practice.

2.2 bar!
The sound deadening material comes off easy when it is very cold. I know some shoot dry ice onto the panels first and the good clip with a blunt 50mm cheisel has a large chunk come away.
Worst bit is the patching that is left looks poor. I am thinking (if i keep my car) of simply putting the flyweight carpet back in over the top as it weighs very little. Saves the cost of paint and the preparation work!
Graham.

Just came back from an evening out checking the course.
Took the bugeye to get a feel of what we are up against. As you mention Graham it is a mountain climb - it was very steep and you could really feel the 2.5l having to work hard. It is off the main road to a village that has only a few residents left.
As it was dark and after 9pm I guessed right in thinking that it would be empty. Putting it mildly it is a difficult course and even more so when it is pitch black.
1.8 kilometres of cliffs on one side, and either guardrail on the other or trees and nice drop or no trees and a drop. It climbs all the way and has many blind corners and it was difficut remembering what speed to hold and at which corner I was at. sometimes a corner was immediately followed by another, which had different camber and a dip in the middle.
Further adding to its hairiness is that the road has subsided and rippled in many areas and since there is no one to complain it has been left as is. It was so bumpy that even with the AST's on the softest setting I was thrown around. The road was also full of stones which had fallen off the cliff face and there was a nice sheen of crushed stones on every corner. made for some interesting movement sideways under power. Also some areas with concrete
Had seven runs then the rain came. Still could not get the hang of the hairpin, which is the tightest I have ever seen and has such a steep angle that I scraped the sideskirt going around. even with 2.5l and MD321+ i struggled to get around with any decent speed and with boost. This is where antilag would come in handy.
Anyway I am glad I did it as if I had attacked it on Sunday with no practice, I could see an accident coming on.
Unfortunately no funds left for an in-car camera. Maybe for next tarmac rally that I wil enter in a few weeks.

Race day has come and gone and unfortunately after half of us had done a practice run the event was cancelled due to spectators being f**kwits and standing where they were not supposed to.
The organisational skills were non existent with the competitors not being able to find a spot to park as no one had blocked the road. Race start came and went with spectator cars still coming through looking for somewhere to park. There were no marshalls and no one to direct/stop the spectators.
Anyway my car had a last minute problem Saturday night with reverse gear going walkabout.
We decided that I should run my mechanics STi rally car which competed in an event last week. The only changes made was new AST 3 way rally suspension fitted the day before and a set of 17 inch Yokohama Parada's.
I did not mind as it would give me a chance to see how the 3 way AST's would go compare to the one ways on my bugeye, which was thrown around terribly on the course.
A few differences between a rally car and my two modded Impreza's.
Not enough power - 300 vs 500+
Instant response and even better with antilag - VF28? vs GT35 or MD321+
Rubbish brakes - STi vs KAD/AP 6pots
soft clutch feel - standard vs Exedy twin plate
There was some light rain which made for a very greasy course and I was the 4th car out. My main impression was how good the AST's were. I did not notice that the track was bumpy, at all. It held on beautifully despite greasy conditions and well worn Yoko Paradas. Lots of power slides but all controlled.
I was very impressed and cannot wait to get these on my car. As stated above the brakes were rubbish and I was not confident, as I am used to late braking with powerful brakes.
Ten cars after my run, the event was cancelled due to a high powered Impreza locking up coming into the hairpin and ploughing into the spectators who decided to stand on the outside of the hairpin which had no protective barrier. The crowd managed to part but a mother and her child only managed to avoid it by jumping under a parked Mistubishi L200 which the Subaru crashed into. Only minor injuries but as the crowd had been asked to move on several ocassions and even after the accident they went and stood in exactly the same spot, the event was cancelled.
The other problem is that as it does not rain much in Cyprus, most drivers and competitirs do not have experience in the wet. The same driver lost it and did a 360 on the first corner 5 metres after the start. He then had a 500bhp Impreza in his hands and I think must have panicked when he saw the crowds on the edge of the road.
Luckily no one was killed, but still it has left a bad feeling. As competitors we pay an entrance fee and expect to be provided with a service. The day itself cost me over 350 Euros including tow vehicle and several other drivers over 500 Euros not too mention sleepless nights. I asked for my money back and for them to cover my expenses which was met with answers of 'we are cancelling for your safety'. When i suggested that we will boycott future events, they quickly changed 'cancelled' to 'postponed'.
Some pictures to keep you amused.
My weapon for the day.

This guy comes first all the time. Originally 900bhp for drag racing now down to 700bhp at 2 bar. Check out the wing.

If you look closely you can see the road in the bottom half of the picture leading to the hairpin (out of shot) then look at the top and you will see the road again.

Disgusting organisation and IMHO reckless to run the course.
If there had been a dead/injury, the police would be afterthe Clerk of the Course and to Court.
Please you found the 3 ways worked well, that is my experience too, but many dismiss them in the UK as rubbish.
Out of interest, did you use my settings and if not, can you recall what you used?
The vid on 22b says it all about the 'track', but you look bloody fast!

It was really pathetic. I am still annoyed that we all wasted a day and people were nearly injured. That the roads and driving conditions are dangerous is in no doubt. As drivers we take the risk - I should not have to worry about the spectators.
Yes I remember the settings.
Everything was set at half way. This was the recommendation from AST until they come out in a few weeks to assist with the setup. I would add my vote for AST. I did have some doubts and agonised for months over AST or EXETC, but with my mechanic becoming a dealer for AST and ordering 10 rally kits and a further 4 for tarmac cars, the choice was made.
After the one and only run, I could not say that I would have changed anything - at least on that car, in those conditions. It had a little bit of oversteer which was how I like it anyway - learnt to drive with V8 RWD and owned several Aussie muscle cars.
If I had tried some of the corner speeds with my Whiteline street setup on my own car I would have collected some spectators and trees.
What video are you referring to? I found only one for a Maltese hillclimb. very similar roads though!!

The postponed hillclimb was re-run today. The organisational problems were sorted and there were marshalls, some temporary barriers and a bus shuttling spectators back and forth back and forth.
Got my own car finally sorted on Saturday and managed to drive it for half an hour on Saturday. Response since Paul - Zen -tuned it is fantastic. You cannot tell it is a 2.2l with a GT35. Add to this the flatshift from the PPG box and it felt really fast, even within speedlimits.
The only item I did not get done was the AST suspension, and I was concerned that the Whiteline setup would struggle.
My only refernce point was the 1.40 I did three weeks ago on the one and only run with the rally car.
Despite being fifth car out the the course was covered in dirt and stones as the cliff faces are very brittle and are constantly crumbling. The car felt quite quick but really struggled with grip in the corners as was driving through dirt/small stones in some places. The suspension was overwhelmed in a few places and the car skipped sideways and lost grip. A few sideways moments. Managed to make a decent attempt at the hairpin as was able to get into first easily with the PPG and then wheelspun out. Did a 1.27. The front running Evo did a 1.08 although he uses a co-driver. All entirely legal...
The red Integrale did a 1.10. and various other EVOs and Imprezas ran 1.14 to 1.23. depending on how modified and of course experience.
The only thing I noticed after he run was that the boost controler was showing as peak 0.43 bar. Checked all hoses and everything looked right. Adjusted the boost controller to what should have been 1.3 bar.
Second run, did everything tidier with no errors, although still felt a lack of grip and was very dissapointed with a 1.23. Checked the boost controller and despite resetting was still only peaking at 0.43. Was a bit stumped, although Paul had said that it was problematic when mapping and I should replace it Looks like that time has come.
Unfortunatley a EVO again lost control on the hairpin and climbed up the side of the cliff face and hit a marshall and three spectators. I think a broken leg and various other injuries. This time it was not the organisers fault, just a very fast car with a driver who is prone to crashing and some unlucky spectators.
Delayed for two hours, while the police decided whether to shut it down. Sanity prevailed and we were able to run.
There was another accident on the first corner after the start line, with another EVO
, as he thought he was drag racing. As soon as he hit the dirt while on boost it went straight into the wall. Utimately superficial damage but he had to miss his turnwhile his front end was put back into shape.
THird run and everybody was on edge. Managed a good first section then came around a corner hard in second and found some large stones right on the racing line, had to quickly take evasive action onto the other side which had a nice coat of dirt. ToyoR888 and dirt do not mix. Still not sure how I was able to gather it up. Totally lost the line and pace. Did not push too hard the rest of the course as the lap was stuffed. 1,26 but I was sure that i could have done a 1.20. My average speed on this course was 87 kph. The front runners averaged 97.
Is this considered as fast or slow course??
Another accident fifty metres before the end by a very nice Impreza who was in third with a 1.14 slowed things down again, Extensive damage to the front and especially the rear, with broken supsension. A lot of other cars spun on the day as well and were lucky not to sustain damage.
What did I gain frm the day- car is bloody fast even with 0.43 bar, needs AST suspension, PPG gearset is very nice and easy to use and I think helped me post the times I did despite probably only runing with 300bhp. I am about 10 seconds off the pace, but considering I was between 200-400bhp less than them it was not too bad. Also need a lot of practice to build my confidence and understand how the car responds.
The car got home in one piece
and I can sort the minor niggles this week.
Next weekend I will be entering it in a tarmac rally covering about 120 kilometres of driving. This will be with a co-driver and I have been told that the stages are fast, with driving in fifth and sixth gears required.
I will run a new set of Pagid RS4-2 pads, and 215/45/17 R888 and try and fit a new boost controller. The ASTs will not turn up in time, so I am not expecting too much and again consider it experience for next year.

We have all faced those kind of 'dissapointing' days, and the longer you race there are more of them!
I am sure with boost and AST's things will improve, and that Lancia can go home early
The EVO is obviously fast in many areas, so focus on him. Bound to fall off soon though by all accounts....

I know that with a bit of fettling and driving experience it will be up there and snapping at their heels. Was looking yesterday and noticed many areas for weight improvement.
Using this weekend as major car time, as over 10 hours yesterday only got 4 minutes of driving
Just saw a video posted on YouTube under 'Paphos Hillclimb' - shows the last seconds of the EVO crashing into spectators. Either his brakes failed or his brain failed. The concensus of the other drivers was brain failure.

The beauty of not having any expectations is that you can turn up to an event and enjoy it.
I took a good book and IPOD, and only popped the bonnet after each run to make sure that no hoses had disconnected. NO changes made on the day. Had a small tool set and no help. The pros/workshops tune up with service vans, five mechanics, tyre warmers and are constantly scurrying about changing settings and looking worried.
Unable to run this weekend as co-drivers are rarer than rocking horse sh*t.
The experienced ones are all taken from last year or do not have the necessary papers, health certificates. Shame as lots of fast road driving on normal mountain roads rather than little tracks where you cannot make a mistake as every second counts without a chance to make up for any mistakes. I have already organised someone for the next tarmac rally to ensure that I do not miss out.
I know it will only get better and cannot wait until a certain course comes around that I have run before and was about 5 seconds off the pace two years ago with much less bhp, rubbish mapping, synchro box etc.

I wish i could take the same ourlook as you!
Last year i was quite depressed about the car/me combination. Of the 11 hillx i did I enjoyed just 3. 2 in the Impreza and one in my old 911.
I am racing in the 911 this year in a different class to the Imprezas/EVO etc as to be honest they are all too fast for me (Rob and his Bro and a few others) so would feel ashamed at coming last!
It is not good having an ego.
For 2009 I hope to be hillclimbing a real racing car, maybe with an Impreza engine in the Libre class (anything goes class) where the technical element is a bit more obvious for me.
Good luck!

I weighed the original front seats again. 20 kilos each.

Paul from Zen Performance came out and mapped the cars on Tuesday and Wednesday. Will try and post some video of the cars on the dyno plus the dyno sheets. Does anyone know how to post videos??
The 2.5l bugeye street car performed rather well. 390bhp and 394ftlbs torque at the wheels on normal 100 octane pump fuel at 1.7 bar. So should be about 470bhp at the flywheel. Sounds about right considering it was a 500bhp car with 10% methanol in the UK. Produces peak power at about 6000 and peak torque at 3500 or so. It is magic on the road with the longer Forester Sti gearing.
The race car was not so easy. Started off nicely with lower boost but as soon as 1.6bar and higher revs were mixed it misfired. Paul tried various things and ultimately on Tuesday night at 8pm we decided that a fresh start in the morning would be in order.
We added a set of new colder spark plugs and closed the gaps slightly and rechecked all intercooler piping and that the new boost controller was working. All in order. As time was not on our side we decided to work with 1.6 bar and limit to just over 7000rpm. Compared to last year where we made 440bhp atw at 1.8bar, we were limited to 395 plus about 330ft/lbs of torque. Again no slouch as these are wheel figures, but just a little dissapointing considering that it can probably make over 450 on the 100 octane fuel and closer to 400ft/lbs torque. The car was given 47 power runs!!! It sounds fantastic as you will hear when I load the video.
The diagnosis is possibly the valvetrain may need upgrading. Will see how I go over the next three hillclimbs and if I feel that I need more power I will pull apart in the off season and see what is going on. There is still a lot more power lurking in there and this is before even considering race fuel.
The AST 3 ways were fitted and I am sure that over the next few races I will be fiddling with this rather than worrying about the power output.
Thanks to Paul and Liz for making the trek to Cyprus. I think it will be a yearly trip.
I hope they enjoyed the weather, 33 degrees on Tuesday and 37 on Wednesday and Paul had to also suffer being blasted by the heat/flames from the screamer pipe as I do not have a second seat installed.

Good to see Alan's old car still going strong. Peak torque at 3500rpm, now thats awesome. It always went like a steam train in the UK. I miss having the opportunity to drive that car!
You got a bargain there!

Yep it is a great car. Does everything so effortlessly, fairly quiet and comfortable as well. the only changes are that now I run with a RCMS downpipe with a cat. I am one of the few that has gone back from a decat.
No other changes required. If you come out to Cyprus, let me know and I will take you for a spin.

Liz,
I hope you enjoyed it for a few days. Have another two months of this. I thought I was going to melt today. It was 39 at 2pm, 37 at 7 pm and my thermometer shows 35 at nearly 11 at night. Need many beers to not suffer dehydration.

Finally worked out how to load.
2.5l 389bhp and 391ft/lbs at the wheels 1.7 bar
Classis hillclimb 2.2l 394 and 332, but limited to 7000rpm and 1.6 bar.
Crank up the volume andlisten to the 2.2l, Goes mental at 4000rpm.

Hillclimb today. New circuit. 3.3 kilometres long, smooth and very fast. Mainly 3rd gear corners with 4th gear straights. only needed second three times. Gearing seemed about right although others with six speed Imprezas with shorter gearing needed 6th and nearly every other car needed top gear.
Limited to 7000 rpm but on the fastest section was hitting 125mph in fourth.
Unfortunately due to police crackdown on race cars and booking rally cars while in the Cyprus Rally a few weeks ago, I never got the chance to run the car on the road for fear of it being confiscated.
Unfortunatey being the second time driving with the PPG dog engagement set I just did not get the hang of it and on the three second to third changes kept on getting it wrong and losing a heap of time. Need to somehow find some practice time on the road , as it is difficult to learn to drive on a new circuit with new suspension and difficult box.
On my second run around a bend, got a nice splash of oil on the windscreen an the car understeered badly. Got to the top and saw red oil under the bonnet. The AST remote canister had burst a rubber o-ring!! It is being shipped off to them tomorrow. Packed up in disgust and left.
Nothing going right at the moment.
Dont know what times I did, quite bad I imagine but with some good stretches where I was able to use the power quite nicely.
