The installation is much simpler with the 'fly-by-wire' throttle cars, its all done in software by the ecu. On cars with a throttle cable, and that would include the 04 legacy, there is a separate, additional black box, plus a mechanical actuator, plus a parallel throttle cable which hooks on to that spare crank on the throttle. So not really the same thing at all.

If its the command module is all thats required, I too would be interested in having a unit sent/brought back from the us assuming the cost isn't astronomical. I'd cover all expenses, naturally.

Can you tell me if you can source the parts to fit Cruise Control to my STI? If so, it would be great to know how much the parts would cost and how much it would cost to have them fitted. I am very keen to have the proper Subaru kit rather than an after market kit.

I have posted on a forum (Scoobynet) to see if any other WRX / STI drivers knew of any Subaru parts and the response has been no, but there are several people who are keen to find out the response.

I have also contacted Subaru in Australia to see if they can provide a price for the parts and tell me if they would be compatible with a UK car. I fully appreciate that they may not know, but I am very keen to find out about this.

Any imformation or help you can provide will be greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read my mail.

Kind regards,

Right, took a good look at my car today and here's what I found. Please bear in mind I'm enthusiastic but very amateur with car electrics! I have lots of photos if anyone wants to host/post them for me.

First difference between my 06 STI and my dad's 04 Legacy 2.5 SE is on the plastic surround on the back of the steering wheel where a cruise control stalk would stick through. There is no hole in mine, but creating one wouldn't be too much of a hardship.

2nd the airbag etc is held in with torx not allen keys, didn't have any with me today. D'oh! So couldn't compare steering wheel innards.

The STI dash doesn't have a cruise on indicator so I thought we may be scuppered with the "all the wiring's there" assumption, but then I looked at the owner's manual!

In the 06STI manual it has operating instructions etc for the Oz cars. The control stalk is different to the Legacy, in that the Legacy has the cruise on/off on the stalk. The Oz STI has a on/off button on the dash, I presume next to the i/c water spray and fog light buttons. On looking at the wiring behind the blank on mine i'd say it's not front fog switch wiring (different connector, wire layout to the rear fog) but exactly what it is for I could not tell.

So we may need a control stalk and a button for the dash? I have photos of under the lower dash panel of connectors, relay mounts etc if of use to anyone? Also, will check out a US dealer week after next, see how theirs are done and chat to a dealer.

One more thing, does the legacy 2.5 litre engine (non turbo) have cable or FBW throttle? looked the same as mine to me and couldnt see throttle cable anywhere.

Hope this may have been of some use . . .

WOW!

There has been so many postings since I last checked this, thank you so much to everyone who has got involved and done a great ammount of research into this. It appears that there is genuine interest for this.

I am afraid that I have not heard back from Subaru (UK) at all at the moment and have not found a way to contact Subaru oz.

It would be great to find out if the command module is all that is required and that way, a simple substitution and some trimming of the steeringwheel could result in a working OEM control. I was tempted to undo the Torx on my steering wheel but then I suddenly remembered the airbag and thought it best to leave it for now!

I will update everyone as soon as I hear back from Subaru, but in the meantime, if anyone has pictures or manuals etc, please PM them to me and I can host them on my website for everyone to download and digest.

Thanks very much to all involved again, what a great source of quality advice and interest.

I have found details for the dealers but wanted to e-mail them ideally and have not been able to find an e-mail address.

I think e-mail is better than calling them sometimes as you can get across plenty of information for them to digest.

It may be interesting to find out what the American dealers are saying also and Pete N is going to check with them when he is across.

Pete, please keep us all posted as to your progress.

Hi

Great post and well interested in this.

Is it worth a list of who is seriously interested in possibly having a conversion, depending on price of course etc etc.
Just thinking if we can get 5 or 10 names etc then maybe a localish Subaru dealer would think about the £s for fitment and help us out with this ?

Default Oz email links

gods dad,

Interested in this myself and saw you weren't getting anywhere with contacts in Oz so mailed a pal of mine out there. He's sent me these links - seem to be general contact addresses (the SVM one is an interactive contact page on their site) but it might help get that ball rolling........

Tynan: information@tynan.com.au

SVM: SVM Subaru - contact us

Hope it helps. Cheers,

Stewart.

Okay first things first. Thank you so much to everyone who has posted on this thread and to all of those who have gone out of their way to try and look into this further. It is really great to see that I am not the only person who feels that this would be a great addition to the car.

Secondly, apologies for the lack of updates, but I have been away for work and not really had a chance to do anything more. However, after spending 8 hours on the M6 etc today (Edinburgh to Bradford and back), my determination has been boosted!

weemac2000:

In reply to:
On the 06/07 sti, the cruise control is implemented by the ECM which instructs the electronic throttle unit actuator. The 'command switch' is a stalk attached to the side of the steering wheel hub. I haven't confirmed this, but AFAIK, all the components needed by the system other than the command switch are in place already, and it would appear likely that the wiring is also in place. The subaru parts manual shows the command switch as part reference 83151, but wont translate that to a part number without the VIN of a e.g australian car.

Is there anyway that you can confirm the above? If you can, it would appear that we only need to translate the part number, buy the stalk, fit it and cross fingers! (If I am understanding correctly). I am more than happy to buy a stalk and be a guinea pig.

Pete N:

In reply to:
Anywho, I'm in good ol' USA next week, might stop in for a chat at a dealer over there, I've always found them mega friendly and helpful in the past compared to our dealers. If anyone has any more info or specific questions please let me know!

Please do find out about this and if you can do any part number translation, again, I would be happy to square you up for a command stalk and costs by paypal or similar.

Please do send through the photos and I will host them for others to see.

ste d:

The list is a great idea, thanks!

SKS:

Thanks for the contact mail addresses. I have not heard back from Subaru UK or Subaru Aus yet, so I will "Prod" them both again and say that there seems to be a fair ammount of interest in this product.

I will post all photo's / files that are mailed to me here so that everyone can see them / download them. ( I don't pretend I'm a web designer!)

Cruise Control on UK STI Spec D

Thank you so much one and all, and lets keep this going to a conclusion.

A couple of questions I forgot:

Does anyone know if it is safe to undo the 2 torx screws on the side of the steering wheel? I know it sounds stupid, but I know nothing about airbags and would feel stupid if...

I wanted to try and see if there is a connector behind the cover where the stalk is on the forrester etc and where it is shown on the Aus model.

Secondly, does anyone have an imported US or AUS model with the fatory cruise that would be willing to post some pics and have a look for any part numbers etc?

Got the parts/service man in Forfar looking into this for me today. I missed his call back but will call him in the morning.
He did say that Subaru have looked at this in the past on UK spec cars and there were too may problems to make it worth doing.
Not sure if this has been thought about, but do you not think that the ECU will have to be reprogrammed to have the CC set up?

It is a possibility that the ECU may need reprogrammed, just not sure.

I can't see why it would be such an issue when it is standard on AUS and US STI's. Surely it would be harder for Subaru to remove all the stuff for the UK cars than to leave it in.

The problem is that I have no idea why it is not available on UK cars. Please post up what the guy has to say as I am sure everyone is interested.

OK, Fred in Forfar has been told by Subaru UK that cruise control is not an authorised option for uk/euro spec cars...(as we already know). Japan simply don't do it nor would they accept an order for the parts needed.
He was also told that you would need a NEW ECU FOR CC TO WORK, but its not a straight swap from a AUS/US to a uk/euro car because there are other differences i.e. the engines/gearboxes are not the same etc.
Also if you managed to get the bits and got it up and running then your warrenty is out the window should anything go wrong.

What a nightmare!

I would be really interested to find out why this is the case. It's an odd one. I heard back from Subaru UK today:

Hi Tony

Product Liabilty inhibits us from advising on fitting cruise control as an after
market option. It may well be available as a line fit in other countries, but it was not given as an option for UK models.

Regards - Gary Langford - Subaru Parts UK.

I am going to reply back asking for more information, but it looks like a no go here.

Reply sent as below:

Gary,

Can you provide any more information on this? Why does the liability inhibit the fitment of Cruise to the STI but not the Forrestser etc? Would there be any way that the foreign version could be fitted? Would the fitment of aftermarket cruise control invalidate the warranty?

Thank you so much for the reply.

Kind regards,

Tony

I'll keep everyone posted, but it's looking a bit grim at the moment.

Subaru have replied:

Hi Tony

It was FHI's (Fuji) decision to withdraw after market fit cruise controls and only
install them on the line. Some of the after market units had been fitted incorrectly
and created legal issues. There were also other niggley problems on STi turbo models
as the turbo cuts in at certain rev levels causing surges when cruise control was set
at say 75mph and the vehicle approached an incline, creating a stop-go effect.

Product liability prevents us from advising otherwise to above. You will have to
approch another market where they are fitted as standard and see if they are willing
to advise. We are not able to assist further.

Sorry, I can't be of more assistance.

Regards - Gary L

The manual says ' disconnect the battery earth and leave for 20 seconds before starting work, then unscrew and disconnect the airbag module'. The screws holding the module are Torx T30, but the tamperproof type ( they have a pin in the middle of the recess)

Sounds like a fob off, if it was really a problem with the turbo kicking in and creating a stop/go effect then the Aus/US STi wouldnt have it either.

I have to agree that I think it's a fob off too.

If the cruise did cause a stop start effect, why on earth would it be a fatory fit option on the AUS and US models? There is just no way that this is the issue.

Reading his comments, I think some of the Subaru dealers (EUR / UK) have maybe not installed the kit correctly and Subaru are worried about legal action. However, I have no idea why the Cruise is not a standard option on the EUR / UK models if it is on the other ones. It seems like it is a fair bit of hassle to remove it and I can't think why they have removed it.

I am not sure where to go with this one now. I am more determined than ever to have Cruise fitted, but it looks now like the only way that this can be done is through an after market kit, which I am reluctant to fit.
