PS3 Biggest selling launch ever :)

Dan,
Nice demo.....but most static demo's (that was quite static really) are. Didn't the 360 have a game on launch that had a shedload of independant orc's (or whatever they were) in game battling away?
Don't get me wrong..... I really hope the PS3 delivers what it has been advertised as being able to do. But like many people, I want to see that now and not just as some advertising blurb.

Kameo and Ninety Nine nights both did that, and that's using old technology compared to the current stuff

Well after Friday gone I own all 3 i.e 360, PS3 and wii
in summary if you care to believe all the rubbish Sony Spout and to an extent MS you will get the 'fanboy' mine is bigger than yours pretty much like the scoob vs evo debate
Now from someone who has all 3 and has had each console from launch (I have a close friend at game who can swing me one ) my honest opinion the wii is the most fun after 5 pints and 6 lads round yer house, I cant though be bothered after a long hard day at work to play it on my own tho, the 360 is great as it has the widest software range, and online xbox live beats everything else for its simplicity and ease of use and transparency with its games, and the price of the 360 is a real bargain.
The ps3 nice looking, motostorm is fantastic looking, the rest of the launch titles are same if not worse than the 360 from a year ago in my opinion, tbh having seen forza 2 on the 360 that rivals Motostorm for gfx, I luckily only paid 350 quid for my ps3...but I did then notice the 360 Extreme is out in the states today, with a 120 gig hard drive and rumoured cpu imporvements to speed it up and hdmi etc! all for exchanged out £255 quid so will be around 300 probably here.
I like some things of the ps3 but boy its overpriced for what it is, its a game box thats all, no matter how sony dress it up, you say PS3 first thing people say is whats the games like, they dont care about blue ray (not bad btw)or the rest of rubbish. For those of you saying ps3 is only on 1st gen games so what, by the time it gets onto 4th gen the new xbox and wii will be here so thats irrelevant, sony need to seriously cut the price and like now, anyone considering one, either wait for it to get sub 300 or at least wait until the 'proper' ps3 games come out that look at least like motostorm right now. It's good but not great, and certainly not 400 quids worth of great vs its competitors.

What people have to realise about the price, is that in a way it is a very clever strategy.
Sony are one of the main adopters of Blu-Ray, with not only a manufacturing of hardware concern, but also a film company's concern.
How do you get a new DVD format out to the masses easily. Whack it on a games console and still make it half the price of a standalone player.
Remember..... Sony has a big interest in Blu-Ray being the dominant format over HD DVD.... what better way to help that market penetration. I heard that since the release of the PS3, this has single handedly ensured (at present) that Blu-Ray is the dominant format now.
The other half of me thinks MS have done the right thing, as at least they give the consumer the choice, but as a sheer marketing strategy Sony have secured blu-ray at the moment.
That takes some ***** (considering this could cause issues with the console sell through), but lets be honest, it seems like it has worked to a large degree.
(see I told you I wasnt against the PS3 )

Played the neighbours PS3 for a good while today.
Very good indeed, played Resistance online and was impressed playing smoothly online with a room of 40 people, still annoying yank tw*ts. Never seen a server on Live with that many in a room.
Impressed by the quietness of the unit in operation and start up
Question though, how do you access the online Home feature or is that only for Jap and US payers?

An interesting quote from Eidos this morning...
Seeing as the console has been out for several months (in USA and Japan), why would they consider the installed user base to be too small to justify releasing software?
Tomb Raider and Hitman publisher Eidos has revealed that "most" of its major PS3 releases will not arrive until 2008, because the company doesn't think the console's install base is high enough yet.
"We believe that PlayStation 3 will be a successful platform, and are developing technology and products for this console," Eidos CEO Jane Cavanagh commented, upon announcing the company's financial results.
"However, as we do not believe that the installed base will be high enough until the second half of our 2008 financial year, most of our major product releases on the PlayStation 3 platform are not scheduled before that date."

I was reading about that in the Evening Standard last night.... My first thought was "READ: We're going to see if enough people buy the console to warrant us making a significant investment in actually developing anything for it"

Its just like signing off your companys budgets, just one person can't order, sign off & purchase.
Sony are inaffect the manufacturers of Bluray so seems dubious that theyre forcing it out there to make it the standard. But then again it must be ok as im sure the MS lawyers would be all over it.

It's only illegal if your are Microsoft. Other companies do it (Apple for example with all their own brand software), but MS seems to be the only one that every gets in trouble for it. I guess it's because they've got such a huge market share...

More stats just in. 600,000 PS3s were sold across PAL territories, putting a staggering €400 million through retail in the opening weekend, comfortably the biggest launch ever.

How does that make it the biggest launch? in monetary terms what do you expect with a unit costing £400+
i was talking to my local game manager, and he said console for console there still even, they have sold the same amount of stock, its just that Sony have more stock available than MS did.... but they havnt sold any more...
some have been trade ins from xb360, and others upgrades ps2-3
so its still open to debate
re the eidos comment.... comes back to "will it be a lemon" with an overinflated price and a relatively small catalouge of games, im hanging fire

LOL it's bigger in terms of everything.
More total units
faster time
Higher price
Higher attach rate of launch titles per console
Biggest total value of opening weekend
Shall I go on?
Is it really that hard to just say 'okay, that's impressive'. You won't spontaneously burst into flames or be ostracised from your 360 buddy lists.

It's impressive, but it still doesn;t mean anything as we have no idea how many units the wii or 360 would have sold if they had similar quantities available at launch.
Now comes the tricky part for Sony. keeping up the momentum

Nope
It is endlessly entertaining!
I love the fact that it apparently doesn't mean anything! The fact is a launch is a launch is a launch. If you don't have enough units in the market to satisfy demand, that's tough! You should have delayed the launch!
I mean, you can just make up your own stats as you go.
