If you hold the button for 15 Secs and fully turn off the DSC on the M3 then the Scoob will definately be the quicker car on the cross country stuff. The thing I like about scoobs on cross contry road say with damp and dry patches is that you know exactuly where you are with them when the tyres are losing grip - with the M3 (fantastic car that it is) it doesnt give me confidence of exactly how progressive the loss of grip will be on this type of road.

The M3 DSC is either on or off. Its the lesser models 330's d's that has the 2 mode DSC i.e holding for 5 seconds turns it totally off

I know this because i spent all day saturday drifting around bedford autodrome, unless i forgot to turn it off, then i got nowhere

I previously had a E36 M3 and have to say it was quite fun, but as far as the performance goes my JDM WRX Type RA is much faster even up to 100mph.
The top end is only about 120 in the scoob where as the M3 was much much more.
With it haveing short gearing and being the lightweight version makes a difference.
I know the E46 has more power but still think most scoobys would win.

Not always down to BHP.

LOL
I am writing this from Munich and have just spoken to someone very well informed about BMW E46 M3. As it is his job. This is what he tells me...

Apparently most owners only think the DSC is on or off. But in actual fact it has three settings. 1. On 2. Off (But in actual fact only partialy off - some of the electronic wisardary is still asleep in the background and will activate if the car is really pushed. 3. Totaly Off - This involves holding down the DSC button for a longer period of time - at least 15 seconds (Many owners dont know of this)
So is an excellent bit of technology really.

RB5SCOTT

Were you drifting it and getting the back to snapout a bit on Saturday or did you overcook it and spin? The later situation is when some of the DSC stuff aparently wakes up again.

Do you get it on to Bedford or the like often?
Fancy testing the theory to see what happens?
To see if we have uber bull**** on our hands here
I am going for a drink with him on Friday - so will question him more.
I will also be driving a E46 M3 at the end of the month in Britain. But wont get a chance to push it hard in a big space.

I did both, Its easy to drift and gain control out of 2nd gear corners/hairpins but its also easy to drift the faster 3rd gear corners. The problem with controlling the faster corners is winding the lock back off once you want to come out of a corner. I got it right a few times but one time i did'nt and ended up fishtailing up the road and finally into the gravel

currently uploading half a lap on you tube so will post up!

Becase everyone knows it`s power that sells performance cars not torque, And also to confuse the matter torque is now displayed in Nm, not lb/ft, this could be because everyone is going metric , or it could be because you get a bigger number in Nm, thus making your car look quicker than it is, becuase every one knows that 300nm is quicker than 225lb/ft, or is it. And the fact that it will be trying to put down over 150 bhp a wheel when you try and launch it compared to a scoobs 50 - 75 bhp per wheel.

No one will ever take you seriously driving a subaru, they just dont have the image, If I turned up at clients premises in a impreza they would laugh at me.
The M3 and Scoob are both fast, but apart from that, they are worlds apart. The interior of the two cars couldn't be more different - the M3 is quality, the scoob is awful. The M3 feels better put together (funny that), and if being taken seriously by customers is important to you, again the BM wins. But I wouldn't change mine for an M3. Driving an M3 makes me feel my age, while driving the scoob makes me feel like a kid, and I can't help grinning. And I enjoy driving in the wet as much as in the dry, which wouldn't be the case if I had a BM. And although the BM has a better businessman image, not everything about a BMs image is positive. Although the M3 is a fantastic drivers car, some will see it as a statement of wealth, and that's not a statement I wish to make.

I expect I will grow up one day, and drive something like an M3 (for it's quality and ability), but right now, money no object, I would rather have a scoob.

You're probably right though - most scooby owners would take the M3

I am 40 and prefer the scoobs - no contest. I just like cars for the way they drive - so image never comes into it.

If I had to pull into clients car parks - who were driving similiar cars - I would take the M3
If I had to do big miles on the Autobahn - I would take the M3
If spent a lot of time on the track - Then I would take the M3

But I dont do any of the above at the mo.
So the Scoob wins for me - it puts more of a grin on my face when it comes to everyday driving.

Hi Steve,

DSC is OFF when you push the button to turn it off. There is no further intervention "if really pushed" - I drive mine on the lock-stops and you can't really get any more pushed than that There isn't anything you can't do (fun wise ) once you've turned it off - so there's nothing to hold the button for 15 seconds for.
That's been the case for the M3 and CSL I've owned since 2002

PS, there are 3 settings on the CSL - ON/OFF and an 'inbetween' mode called M-Track, where it allows a little more slide than DSC ON would - but M-Track has it's own button to select it.

Thanks for clearing that up for me fella
As you say you have proved that no aids kick in once the button is off - so looks like my German pal has it wrong.

It's 1 test with many variables nothing more, but you seem to trot this out as THE metric of performance, which it isn't. Is this your sole criteria for making a judegement call on the merrits of both cars, you have used it a few times in this thread alone.

What a crap site that is

According to that simulator the Veyron gets from 0-60 in 0.9secs and onto the QTR in 6.17secs with a terminal speed of 251mph. Not very accurate is it, numb nuts

That is why I have a MY05 WRX STI PPP and a Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade

Best of both World's for straight lines and bends

Also bikes are not as slow as some people think around bends, it just depends on how crazy you are....

I've already got my flame proof pajama's on but i thought i'd add this.

I own a MY94 JDM WRX, decat centre, WRsport backbox, Apexi filter and Z4 ecu. I'd estimate now my coilpacks sorted its probably putting out around 260BHP.

Tonight sitting at a roundabout in the left lane of 3 an '03 M3 came and sat the other side of a van in the right lane. I didn't think much of it but as the lights went amber he shot off across the van onto the 2 lane dual carraigeway ahead. I thought "Sod it" and went after him, although he was about 30yrds ahead. I thought after reading this thread i stood no chance but wanted to find out, i honestly thought he'd be off before i even hit 4k.

Well i not only caught him at about 60, i stayed with him up to about 90 when i overtook him!. I was shocked i caught up, shocked i stayed with him and even more shocked as i changed gear i went past him. He was definately going for it, straight road so not really much about ability.

Anyway he wa in the right lane where i needed to be, so i broke, indicated right and let him past pissing myself laughing in shock. Then as he went off i flashed my lights but i don't think he was too happy.

Call me a liar, say he wasn't really going for it but i know the truth. Sorry to re-start this thread but i had to share it.
