YEAH AND U SAID U BEAT HIM IN UR STANDARD WRX! which means 221bhp, if u want to believe that u beat him then fair enough u have 221bhp going through 4wd system and he has 343bhp going through 2wheels, if u launch perfect u will gain on him for the first few seconds, after that its goodluck to you

This is starting to turn into a "my Saxo VTR pwned a Bugatti" thing isn't it?

Oh - and the 'book' says a standard WRX only does 146mph. (if we're going to get **** about figures!)

Your place or mine

Mind you I always need at least 20% more power than you as you are a faster driver than me

If my Clio cup is faster than a WRX, then its now faster than a car with twice its power.

Standard WRX (or even PPP'd) will not beat an E46 M3.
STI might beat one, but not by an awful lot.
(All depandant on driver though)

I have a 2002 Sti and raced an M3 one night (not a convertible). No open road but lots of tight twists and turns. Coming out of corners if I was down on revs he was faster but there was very little in it - but in all honesty I am a crap driver so who knows but I would say I was a touch faster

If the 2006 STi has the 2.5 l motor it should be the faster car IMHO.

Rannoch, what was the power on the Spec C ? I would have thought it would have been a fair bit more than 265bhp ?

From Evo magazine :

Impreza WRX 03-05 : 0-100 in 15.7 secs

BMW M3 (343bhp) : 0-100 in 12.3secs

! reckon the M3 driver was a bit dosey with his clutch !!

The question was regarding a cabriolet (and my comparison) and they are a tad heavier than the standard item and slow are likely to be a tad slower (especially in the Twisties (tm)

And regarding my power - yes - but a standard JDM Sti would have a lot more than 265bhp - the original question does not specify UK or JDM.

What are we actually talking about when you say the word 'quicker'?

In a straight line or around a track?

Any fool can put their foot down in a straight line, get it on the twisties; that's where it counts

I'm suprised this hasn't been mentioned....
BMW M3 Coupe E46 Convertible 02 343BHP 1655KG!!!!!!!!.
So maybe in a straight line the BM but who'd want to try and get it round the corner when it weighs the same as a ferry!.

I have to say if your a bm owner you will beat any car on the road or track because everyone else wastes time looking where they are going, indicating or being considerate. If you cut people up, pull out on them, chat on your phone you will be faster than everybody and everyone will wave and flash their lights because everyone loves BM's and wishes they were as good a driver as you.

When my MY03 STi had 333bhp it used to get out gunned by CSL's all the time. Not by much but they could pull away. I would think mine would have been on a par with a standard M3. As an 06STi has less power I would suggest the M3 9although I dont know much about the convertible) would have the edge over it, not with the top down though

I have done enough in the 'twisties' as you call them to know that a good driver in an M3 will give you something to worry about. Again not sure about the soft top version though ......

Jesus christ - this thread makes for painful reading.

Firstly, despite its quicker 0-100mph time it is entirely possible that an M3 would be done out of the hole by a subaru and still not be physically in front by 100mph. This is the advantage of 4WD from a dig. So those above that are referring to traffic light grand prix may indeed have 'had' an M3 but believe me it would have been catching to overtake!

But make no bones about it you'd get absolutely murdered on the move and the guy that claims to have been beaten an M3 above 100mph and believing the M3 was trying is crazy!! (btw, I assume the M3 didn't have its roof down, in which case you probably could beat it above 100).

The funniest part of this thread though is the suggestions that 220bhp WRX's might be quicker than an M3 220bhp non-classic Subaru's are sh*t slow, I used to pass then quite comfortably in the S2000 even with roof-down drag and the M3 is a quicker car than the honda.

I'm wondering if half the contributors in this thread have ever actually seen an M3 being driven hard. I have a 305bhp classic STI and an M3 would absolutely mug me from 60mph up and keep up over any other speed range with the exception of 0-30 off the line.

Weight is always a factor but these sorts of cars are quick on the move where outright power is the key consideration. I recently drove a 325bhp Supra which is a good 200kg+ heavier than my Impreza but above 6-70mph this thing just took off and an M3 is more powerful stil.

Does this matter?
I actually race my Sti v3 on track against a timing system.
It is quicker than a 360, a Viper and several other 'mega' cars.
It is not faster than a 550ish bhp EVO 5 RS by a country mile, and a Sunbeam Lotus on slicks is almost uncatchable.

Why be obsessed by it all?

I think the people you seem to pick-on are all keen to see you get out of the way or are having fun watching you prove something in your mind.

150 down a French road? Mad.

I know and he didn't even mention beer/****, why would anyone go to France unless it was for a beer run?. France smells of cabbage.

I love these threads, wonder when the next one will appear - STI VS 911 or STI Vs Boxster. "Yeah but a good driver....". People get themselves so angry lol.

911, Boxster...... And why not????

I don't rate Boxster's anyway and most average 911's do 0-60 in the mid 5sec range, even the Carrrera 4S does 0-60 in 5secs flat. And so upto around 80mph a decent STI PPP driver stands a good chance, but above 100mph the 911's will have the serious advantage.

The 911 Turbo would whoop any scooby though, 0-60 in around 3.8 secs.

But then of course I've got my CBR1000RR Fireblade to sort Porsches and Ferrari's out at those speeds.

I don't understand why so many people are overating the M3, the damn thing don't really wake up until after around 5500rpm, they also have a variable valve timing system a bit like Honda's VTEC and so upto 100mph they will always be trying to play catch up, providing the scooby driver launched it well.

Only reason to be in France was LeMans. I also never said a WRX was the faster car on paper , but I just happened to beat a mate in his M3. It's not all about the numbers on paper boys. In the real world the driver makes all the difference, so yes he may have been a mug that day....am I bovvered....did it and the other 3 guys involved know it too.

My M3 was definitely quick and probably had the legs on an STI. I would easily keep up with bikes much to their annoyance. However, they cannot corner anywhere near as well as a scooby so on anything other than a Motorway you would probably be waving at the M3 from your rear view mirror. BTW.... brakes on M3 - AWESOME!!

M3 can no way keep up with any modern superbike in a straight line

But lets not hijack this thread.
