Gym---- bench press
You know when u say do 3 sets of 10 reps of say bench presses-how much rest do u have betwen each set?-im just starting out and when i do 3 sets of say bench presses i would do 10 first, then a minutes rest, then next 10 bench presses, minutes rest and then last set of 10 bench presses.
Is a minute about right?

with your sets though is 3 sets not including a warm up - you could do with doing a couple of sets at a light weight then maybe 2 heavy.
i normally do 6 sets 2 light, 2 medium and 2 as heavy as i can stand it. somertimes i work back down as well.
wont do you any harm stretching before and afterwards as well.
always make sure you are warmed up as well
Thanks for advice-only just starting out and im a weakling so at mo just lifting empty bar-not strong enough yet to actually attach any weights on it lmao
A minute is fine tbh.

And a warm up dosent mean standing by a radiator good stretch out at the start and at the finish concentrate on the muscle you are trying to work and stay to true form no good swinging the weights about with to heavier weight
and remember to breath oh and as silly as it seems learn to count to ten, when we train if you lose count you get another three reps
take it easy when starting as you wont be able to train if you pull a muscle and the 2 day ache is the worse but this eases off when you been training a while good luck keep at it

Thanks for the replies, one of the reasons for me asking the question in the first place is that i find bench pressing with dumbells alot more of a challenge than with a barbell, its not so much that i struggle with the up and down motion, more so the "swaying of the 2 dumbells" but im getting there and feel im getting stronger.
So to add to my question, what is ( in your mind ) a decent ammount for a dumbell curl ? again, doing at least 4 sets on each arm with 6 reps ?
And yes i do know what im talking about blah blah blah, im just interested in peoples opinions.

Tops for me for curls was 30kg although that was doing hammer curls which is easier (for me) than normal so i'd say anything from 15kg above is quite good
Dumbell press is definitely a lot more difficult than bench press. You have t steady the weight a whole lot more meaning you are using more muscles, some of them very small.
If you get the technique right, and work at low reps/max weight, you'll improve steadily.
I do 5x5, so 1st set at 50% of my max, 2nd set at 75% of max, then 3 sets at max weight. Actually, last set is at a weight I cant do 5 at, so normally fail at around 3 or 4. If you want to build, push weights you just cant manage, heavy and intense sessions ather than more reps.
I started doing 12kg's, and progressed from there. Im a small guy so wont ever be pushing massive weights, but have done my falure set at 28kg's in each hand, that's my max currently. Really want to get to 32, that's my goal for the next three months.

Get some Creatine, L-Glutamine and Whet protein down ya
TBH a lot on here prefer Barbell - now this may sound daft but i really struggle with Barbells and much prefer pressing with Dumbells, it seems the heavier i go the more stable they become.
the thing is i've always benched pressed with Dumbells rather than a barbell (unless its the Hammer Strength machine) as i train alone and dont have a spotter

Telboy and I don't see eye to eye often but I totally agree with his sentiments here. Generally if I saw someone rack up two 25kg plates on a 20kg bar then I'd regard them as fairly strong (70kg).
I would say 95% of 90-100kg Rugby players dream of benching 180kg ONCE
I'd say my natural state of strength is below average but when I trained I could achieve around 85kg (on a bar)(I'd say individual dumbells is harder as you use other parts of your muscle to stabilise the movement). Anything over 100kg is pretty impressive to me - it was generally the bigger guys or the very well cut guys that were pushing over 100kg in my Gym. I saw a guy hitting 140kg once and he was a total beast!! Again, I think its absurd to think a 100kg Rugy player is going to be benching near 200kg?! Where is he going to develop this strength without hours and hours in the gym, a perfect eating routine and probably 'other' assistance.
I think a lot of peeps in this thread are talking lbs thinking they are talking kg

Lots of nonsense talked about what constitutes strong.
To give you an idea, when I'm at the gym, I rarely see 100 kilos on the bench machine! 60-70 is MUCH more common.
BUT if you're just starting out. Don't compete with anyone else. You need to set your own goals according to an honest appraisal of your progress. Trying to lift a weight just 'cause you think you should be able to or because x,y,z can is a good way to get injured.
Work hard and enjoy it!

Totally agree with above - **** what anyone else is lifting (they're probably doing it wrong anyway)
i am pretty strong up top but my legs are terrible to the point of embarrassing (dodgy knees') but tbh i couldn't give a flying f*** when people walk past and snigger at what i'm leg pressing.
I do what i do for me not to impress any one else in the gym

I've been training for a couple of years now and generally the guys lifting silly weights (100kg+) are on steriods and openly admit it to me when talking to them in the gym.
And as NS04 says 100kg bench is rarely seen in my gym most people do 60-70kg.
My advice as with others is to set yourself achievable goals, dont compete with anyone else and wait and see your progress in a years time.
A good diet is ESSENTIAL !!!! you have to eat!

I don't train but I do go to the gym occasionally. When I was about 20, I spent a few months training a few times a week with my mates and was lifting (from memory!) 25-30kgs dumbell curls x2, and about 70kgs bench press. The most I ever lifted (1 rep) was 88kgs which was just over my body weight at the time. Would love to see someone lift twice their body weight!!
I've always considered myself fairly strong for someone who doesn't train. I'm just over 6'5" but probably only about 14 stone, which I think is also relevant as I reckon longer arms make lifting harder? I'm sure I could still probably walk in to the gym and bench 65kg, I know I can do the bottom weight on the pec-deck!

Why don't the people who can dumbell press more than 60 KG per hand for 4-5 reps post their pictures up. I am 23.5 stone at 6ft 1 and will happily post a pic up both in the gym and at home.

Lightning 101 has just called a few people's bluff I think!!!
I can assure people that anyone who can do that weight with dumbells is a bit of a monster!!

and my dumbells technique probably sucks!
120kgs is a lot of weight on the barbell. I have done that, but to have to bench 2x60 dumbells. Forget it; I personally wouldn't even try. I know my limitations!
Ns04
as usual a severe lack of pics from all these 'monsters' lol, im benching(barbell) 60-70kg in my workout and im curling 25kg(dumbells), im 6ft 2" and weigh 15st 4lbs. there is no way i see myself benching 1 x my bodyweight nevermind 1.5/2 x it !!!!!
Jacko, maybe its me but i didn't really understand your question, if you are saying that lifting 2x 60kg is not a regular occurance (which is true to a degree) then **** me if you can bench press with proper form 200kg free weight then you should be entering strongman comps my friend.
seriously that is a serious weight - unless your taking the pee of course

I am indeed taking the pee !
I didnt make it very clear did I, I was joking that I attempted 200k (I didnt) and some lads had to lift it off me, it didnt actually happen !
I attemptedt 120k once with two spotters and only just getting it back up did happen, used to be able to do a couple of reps of 100 kilos and got cocky !
Now, er, wouldnt like to try !
The 2 * 60 thing was a mate of my mate who was visiting the gym we used (and he did occasionally as well) and he was making a point !
